Merfolk has been popular for the entirety of Magic's history, ever since Alpha's Lord of Atlantis set up Merfolk as one of Magic's primary supported Creature types. They've been consistently played in Commander, too.
There are currently 337 Merfolk in Magic, and with recent Merfolk hits in Lost Caverns of Ixalan and -- perhaps surprisingly -- in Marvel's Super Heroes, it's a great time to revisit one of Magic's pioneering Creature types for Commander.
The Best Merfolk Commanders in Magic by Color
As of July 2026, we have 42 Commander-legal Legendary Merfolk primed to helm a deck. Almost all include Blue in their color identity, and the majority are either mono-Blue or Simic (![]()
) in identity, so you'll probably be relying on Islands no matter who you build around, with one exception.
The good news is whatever your preferred strategy, you can embrace it with Merfolk, from tokens, value reanimators, or Sea Monster typal.
Perhaps the best way to build a Merfolk Commander deck, then, is to start with the color identity and work from there. Here are my top picks for each Merfolk color combination:
Mono-Blue: Namor the Sub-Mariner
Namor the Sub-Mariner can get out of hand very quickly.
A cheap Flying body that rewards devotion to Blue with a whole school of Merfolk, Namor is nasty in conjunction with cards like Lullmage Mentor, Wanderwine Prophets, and Summon: Leviathan.
Heavily Blue spells like Cryptic Command and Archmage's Charm help you build up an army at a moment's notice, and free spells like Misdirection and Force of Will can surprise an opponent with a couple of Merfolk blockers, or power up your Namor during combat to player-killing status.
There is a bit of tension in his design, as he prioritizes casting noncreature spells over casting actual Merfolk, but a careful mix of Merfolk boosters like Coralhelm Commander and interactive spells like Cryptic Command will let you build a huge Namor.
Mono-Green: Nev, the Practical Dean
At first glance, Nev, the Practical Dean might look like an odd pick for a Merfolk Commander. Mono-Green has a small pool of Merfolk to choose from, as most of the tribe's best cards are Blue. Regardless, Nev gives you a chance to build something a little different.
Instead of leaning on the usual Merfolk plan, Nev rewards you for playing Green's strengths. Ramp into your bigger threats, grow your board with +1/+1 counters, and let your Creatures win through sheer size.
Cards like Deeproot Elite, Adaptive Automaton and Metallic Mimic help keep your smaller Merfolk relevant as the game goes on.
You won't have the card draw, Islandwalk, or stack interaction that Blue offers, but that's part of the appeal. If you want to run a deck that feels different from almost every other Merfolk deck, Nev is a good place to start.
Simic (Blue/Green): Hakbal of the Surging Soul
Green likes to ramp and Blue likes to draw, so it follows that a Green/Blue Merfolk deck likes to draw cards and ramp out.
Hakbal of the Surging Soul is one of the easiest ways to do so, as curving out with a team of Merfolk and then casting Hakbal lets each Merfolk you control Explore.
Combine Hakbal with teammate Nicanzil, Current Conductor, and you have all the Landfall triggers, cards in hand, and counters you could possibly want.
Additionally, Topography Tracker, Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca, and Tatyova, Benthic Druid all let you squeeze extra value out of Hakbal.
As Simic is the true home of Merfolk, the Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander deck is an excellent place to start with your first Merfolk deck. The Explorers of the Deep precon contains numerous Merfolk, including Hakbal, and several excellent Merfolk enablers.
Azorius (White/Blue): Namor, Atlantean King
The most obvious Azorius (![]()
) Merfolk Commander is Sygg, River Guide, but the brand new Namor, Atlantean King lets you amass an aquatic army very quickly.
A host of cheap cantrips like Consider and Opt summons your Merfolk and pays off once you find your copy of Vodalian Wave-Knight.
Blue-White also lets you run the recent Merfolk hits from Lorwyn Eclipsed, including Deepchannel Duelist, Deepway Navigator, and Sygg, Wanderwine Wisdom, who can ensure that Namor can attack and trigger the power-boosting effect without much risk.
Izzet (Blue/Red): Jori En, Ruin Diver
When you want to play a spellslinger deck, but Vivi Ornitier draws too much ire, Jori En, Ruin Diver is a beautifully self-contained Izzet (![]()
) engine.
With enough cheap cantrips (Flow State, Stock Up, or Gitaxian Probe), you can chain cantrips into counterspells and trigger Jori En on everyone's turn.
By itself, that won't win you the game, but playing Jori En also allows you to maximize Marvel's Super Heroes' Merfolk like Daughter of the Deep and Namor, Scourge of the Seas. Couple that with Guttersnipe effects (Exalted Flamer of Tzeentch and Sorcerer Class), and you have the core of a deck.
Dimir (Blue/Black): Sygg, River Cutthroat
The Dimir ![]()
Sygg, River Cutthroat draws you an extra card on each player's turn so long as you're hitting your opponent(s) for three or more life.
That's trivial to achieve with the Islandwalking aspect of Merfolk, and True-Name Nemesis, Tishana's Tidebinder, and Changeling Outcast are all exceptional cards to help you trigger Sygg.
Marvel's Super Heroes also brought one of the most fun cards imaginable for a Sygg deck in Archnemesis.
Plous, while Loyal Subordinate and Dauthi Voidwalker may not be Merfolk, they will still sap your opponent's life for the right amount and make sure Sygg is drawing you cards on your turn.
Bant (White/Blue/Green): Tuvasa the Sunlit
The only option for Bant (![]()
![]()
) Merfolk, Tuvasa the Sunlit lets you play almost every Merfolk covered here.
While Merfolk have little Enchantment synergy, Deeproot Pilgrimage, Deeproot Waters, and Merrow Commerce are excellent cards that are even better when they draw you a card.
Even if you stay away from the traditional Enchantress staples like Sythis, Harvest's Hand or Enchantress's Presence, Tuvasa lets you exploit the Explore synergies of Hakbal, the tapping and control aspects of Sharae of Numbing Depths, and the power of the mono-Blue Merfolk.
Tuvasa is the one Merfolk Commander that lets you run Deepchannel Duelist, Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca, Merfolk Mistbinder, and Vodalian Wave-Knight in the same deck, and as such, is a top pick Merfolk typal Commander.
Considerations for Merfolk Decks
Regardless of who you go with as your Commander, there are Merfolk staples you need to consider. Merfolk has been well-supported over the last three decades, so there's plenty of cards to choose from.
Key Cards:
- Svyelun of Sea and Sky
- Emperor Mihail II
- Coralhelm Commander
- Deeproot Elite
- Kopala, Warden of Waves
- Master of the Pearl Trident
- Merfolk Sovereign

- Vodalian Hexcatcher
- Sygg's Command
General Typal Essentials:
- Kindred Discovery
- Chronicle of Victory
- Vanquisher's Banner
- Harmonized Crescendo

Wrapping Up
With more than 300 Merfolk, there are a host of surprisingly powerful and synergistic cards, so whether you're playing an aggro or control Merfolk deck, your opponents are likely to find beating you as futile as beating back the sea.
