Hello all and happiest of days to each of you! Today, I want to look at my favorite Food Commanders, inspired by the Food brew around Bosco, Just a Bear I just finished wrote up recently!
So, here they are!
#8. Greta, Sweettooth Scourge
First up we have Greta, Sweettooth Scourge, a 3-drop Golgari 3/3 that enters to make a Food token! She has the ability to sac a one for
at sorcery speed to toss a +1/+1 counter on any creature. Or, we can sac a food for ![]()
to draw a card and lose a life, making our food into pseudo-Clue tokens. I love the flexibility of getting three different ways to use food tokens on one cheap leader!
#7. Gyome, Master Chef
Gyome, Master Chef is a 4-drop Golgari color 5/3 trampler that on our end step makes a number of Food tokens equal to the total number of nontoken creatures that arrived under your control that turn. That's great on its own, but Gyome also lets us pay
to sac a Food token and grant a creature indestructible for the turn (at an additional cost of tapping it, like the way the troll mechanic Regenerate used to work!). I love that! You can use his ability to aggressively attack with Gyome for Commander Damage and then force them to make tough blocking decisions thanks to him potentially becoming indestructible at instant speed. His ability is also great for cards and strategies that put a bunch of nontoken creatures into play at once, like Living Death or Eureka.
#6. The Warden of Isengard Partners
Next up are these pertinent partners: Pippin, Warden of Isengard and Merry, Warden of Isengard. Pippin in Golgari costs two man for an on-curve 2/2 that you can tap for
to make a Food token! He also can tap and sac four Food tokens - for no mana - to Overrun your team at sorcery speed, granting haste instead of trample. Then Merry is a 3-drop Selesnya 1/4 you can cast the turn after Pippin, and then when our artifacts enter we can make a free 1/1 Soldier with lifelink (But just once per turn).
#5. Camellia, the Seedmiser
Camellia, the Seedmiser is a menacing 3/3 Squirrel Lord that also gives Menace to your other squirrels! When you sac one or more Food tokens, she makes a 1/1 Squirrel, and there aren't any limits there. Then you spend
to forage (exiling three cards from your graveyard or sacrificing a Food token) to toss a +1/+1 counter on all of your Squirrels. Love it!
#4. Samwise Gamgee
Next up is Samwise Gamgee, a Selesnya colored Bear Halfling leader that creates a Food token whenever a nontoken creature arrives! He also grants you the ability to sac three food tokens over and over for no mana to Regrowth a historic card back to our hand from the graveyard! Love it. He's a great follow up to a board wipe!
#3. Ragost, Deft Gastronaut
Ragost, Deft Gastronaut is a 2-drop Boros colored Bear-sized Lobster that turns all of our artifacts into Food. That's everything from Mana Rocks to Solemn Simulacrum to tokens too. You can tap Ragost for
to Fling food at your foes for three damage each! Then this untaps at the end of each turn if you gained life, so you can do it all again and again!
#2. Ygra, Eater of All
Ygra, Eater of All is a 5-drop kitty with a 6/6 Golgari body and Ward - Sacrifice a Food. All other creatures are Food artifacts and when a Food is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you get to put two +1/+1 counters on Ygra!
#1. Sam and Frodo, Partners in Action
Finally, we have the dynamic duo of Sam, Loyal Attendant and Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit in our top spot! Sam is a 3-drop Selesnya 2/4 that makes a Food token at the beginning of each of our combats! He also reduces the cost to sacrifice Food by
, so he's provides a bit of a Familiar effect (Nightscape Familiar, etc.). Then we have the 2-drop Frodo in Orzhov colors with vigilance and a 1/3 body. When Frodo attacks, if you've gained 3 or more life this turn, the ring tempts you. Assuming you choose Frodo as your ringbearer and you've been tempted twice, you can draw a card, and card draw is always good! You can drop him turn two and attack on turn three after dropping Sam and making a Food.
There we go! What's your go-to Food leader? Would you consider building around one of these?
