Hello all and happiest of days to you! We are now officially a quarter of the way through the century! We're also done with our first year of six Standard-Legal sets, so let's see what stood out. One major issue for tons of folks was the printing of three Standard-Legal Universes Beyond for the first time. And a massive 6 sets added to Standard is a huge change. We also had a Sci-Fi set and a Death Race one too. But how would I rank the sets of this year?
#6. Marvel's Spider-Man
Wow, did this behated set come out just two months ago? This was a small set expanded to a bad normal-sized set at the last minute, had a funky 4-person Pick-2 draft format, was not authorized for Arena play so had different cards names and art and the cards just didn't generally feel very much like Spider-Man. And real life is not always a good setting for fantasy games!
#5. Avatar: The Last Airbender
The placement for this set might feel a bit off, but there's something about Avatar that doesn't quite hit on all cylinders for me. The fantasy here feels more fleshed out and then the four elements also make good sense here. I'm sure that nostalgic Avatar fans may also love and embrace this set. The show is about 20 years old and many players grew up watching it. I hear you. I wish it had Commander decks. And limited is great so far... but, I feel that it's not as strong as a unique world from Magic.
#4. Edge of Eternities
And now we have this okay set! First of all, the art here delivers. The Commander decks and new cards are really cool! The set even has great flavor hits and its great for casual play. I even enjoy that they brought back Kavu! Edge of Eternities also saw the addition of legendary vehicles as possible Commanders. Just really solid overall, but the sci-fi flavor wasn't my favorite.
#3. Aetherdrift
Next up is the first set of the year, a travelogue and Death Race combo. That's not bad! We added some abilities like "Start your Engines!" and it was a very heavy vehicles set that moved their development forward massively. But this set and the race theme also had a bit of a sci-fi bent with Mad Max themes that still feel a little off to me.
#2. Final Fantasy
This fun set based on the classic video game franchise just really hit! It's got oodles of great flavorful art and concepts, brought back the removed Hero type, added in job select and Summon Saga dorks and tons of great value and concepts. There's a lot to love and it was a massive success!
#1. Tarkir: Dragonstorm
Tarkir is a beloved plane with one of the best draft formats ever and introduced the current official wedge names like Jeskai and such. Heading back to it was long overdue and they nailed it on every level! Embrace your inner Dragon!
There we go! As you can see, I tend to prefer the non-Universes Beyond stuff first, save for the good and strong Final Fantasy. What are your rankings though? There are just way too many sets released these days, but what did you think? Thanks bunches.
