Steve Rubin Wins Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad

Reddit

What does Standard look like without Siege Rhino and fetchlands? The answer is diverse. The Top 8 of Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad contained eight different archetypes being played by some of Magic’s very best. Going into Sunday the Top 8 was already being heralded as one of the greatest of all time and might go down in history as the very best. The Top 8 was:

  • Hall of Famer Jon Finkel piloting Black-Green Seasons Past Control
  • Former Player of the Year Brad Nelson with Pyromancer's Goggles Red-Green Ramp
  • Hall of Famer Luis Scott-Vargas in his second consecutive Pro Tour Top 8 with Black Green Aristocrats
  • Hall of Famer Shota Yasooka with another Top 8 with Esper Dragons
  • World Champion Seth Manfield and his Esper Control deck
  • Platinum Pro Steve Rubin with Green-White Tokens
  • World Magic Cup Champion Andrea Mengucci wielding the boogeyman going into the Pro Tour in Bant Collected Company
  • Super Sunday Series Champion Luis Salvatto and Red-White Eldrazi Goggles

  • The finals featured two players who had to fight through some fierce competition to reach the ultimate round. Andrea Mengucci had to take down Jon Finkel and Shota Yasooka in order to collect his spot for a chance to win the title. Steve Rubin only had to take out Brad Nelson and Seth Manfield for a chance to earn his first title.

In the last match of the weekend was a battle of board states. Both Rubin and Mengucci played their games out by flooding the battlefield with creatures, tokens, Planeswalkers and their emblems. Andrea Mengucci was piloting a deck with a target on its back. Bant Company was a known quantity coming into the weekend and Mengucci had fought through the hate until the bitter end. However it was Steve Rubin and his tokens that would emerge triumphant. Game four sealed his victory as Archangel Avacyn transformed for victory.

Congratulations to the Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad champion Steve Rubin!
