Dominaria Hype

Reddit

We keep getting Dominiria card reveals every day and I've tried to wait until everything is out, but I can't. I'm already looking forward to so many cards. Cards that are powerful and do things I love to do in Magic. What do I love to do in Magic? Cast big spells, draw cards, play a bunch of lands, and just doing wacky things. I already have a list of cards that I want to build around. Today's article is going to cover those cards and I'm going to give my thoughts them. Are you ready for Ali's seven most hyped cards?

Well . . .  Ready or not, here we go.

7. Powerstone Shard

This card can very powerful, especially if you're playing it on turn two off a Llanowar Elves. By itself it's okay, but once you get one or two out, then you're really cooking. First, we need to figure out ways to get multiples of these on the battlefield. Mechanized Production and Mirage Mirror are fine ways to get more Powerstone Shards out since they let you play more than four Powerstone Shards. Another fantastic way to get Powerstone Shard out is with Whir of Invention. The wonderful thing about this is that Whir of Invention can find you more mana by getting the Powerstone Shard and late game you can just Whir of Invention for massive amounts. X spells are where we will want to go. So, things like Ribbons, Torment of Hailfire, Jaya's Immolating Inferno, or my personal favorite, Kamahl's Druidic Vow are all solid options.

6. Tatyova, Benthic Druid

Finally! A Simic creature that doesn't want you to play more creatures. Instead it wants you to play more lands, and I'm all about that. Tatyova, Benthic Druid says, "whenever a land enters the battlefield . . . " This is important because it doesn't say, "when you play a land." So, things like Evolving Wilds and Field of Ruin will draw you two cards. Blinking a land will draw you a card. Hour of Promise will get you any two lands, make two zombies, draw you two cards, and you'll gain two life. That's a ton of value. The drawback of course is that she not only costs 5 mana and is a legend, but she has 3 toughness. That means she will die to Abrade, Lightning Strike, and Harnessed Lightning. Your sorcery speed 5-drop will die to an instant speed two cost removal spell. That really blows, I wish she was a 2/4 instead. Even though she's a 3/3, I'm still excited to try her out. Tatyova will be coming down only when I can play an Evolving Wilds right after she enters the battlefield.

5. The Mirari Conjecture

This card is beautiful. Art, name, and it even looks fantastic as a Saga card. Being an enchantment is so important right now because of Abrade and this card could very easily see play. It's not a four off or anything mind you, instead think of it as a planeswalker. One that gets you an instant the turn you play it and the following turn buys back a Fumigate. Then you can untap and cast something silly like Karn's Temporal Sundering or some other insane spell. Honestly? Any instant or sorcery spell you cast that turn is going to be great. From Doomfall, to Glimmer of Genius, or even just Opt. The key to playing this card is to live so it gets the third counter. Cards that are great at this are things like Haze of Pollen. You can cycle it early and then later buy it back with The Mirari Conjecture, so you have enough time to trigger its last ability.

4. Yawgmoth's Vile Offering

These legendary spells at first seem hard to play, until you realize that this set is full of legendary creatures. You know what other legendary creatures are hard to remove that turn all these legendary sorceries on? All the Gods! From Rhonas all the way to The Scarab God. On top of that, Yawgmoth's Vile Offering generates insane tempo and value by destroying the opponent's best permanent and then getting you the best one in any graveyard.

I brewed with Obzedat's Aid back when it was legal. I tried to bring back cards like Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. Yawgmoth's Vile Offering is so much better than that and easier to cast. It's a solid removal spell and a reanimate spell. I'm going to love playing this in a ubx reanimate deck with Liliana, Death's Majesty, Rona, Disciple of Gix, Razaketh, the Foulblooded and whatever other toys we get in Dominaria. Yawgmoth's power is still remembered.

3. Kamahl's Druidic Vow

Legendary sorceries are awesome. I'm a Green mage at heart. I love me some ramp and Kamahl's Druidic Vow calls to me. Is there even a better X spell in Standard? You can cast it mid game to just get extra lands onto the battlefield. Then later follow it up with a game ending Kamahl's Druidic Vow. Let's hit Tatyova, Benthic Druid and some lands then draw all the cards and gain all the life. That's basically a Green Sphinx's Revelation.

Kamahl's Druidic Vow also puts the other cards it finds that you can't play into your graveyard. This is a wonderful way to fill up your graveyard with card advantage. Creatures with Embalm or Eternalize are solid here, and of course we can't forget aftermath cards. It's going to be fun to cast Kamahl's Druidic Vow and fill my side of the battlefield with all sorts of Planeswalkers and fancy legendary creatures.

2. Karn's Temporal Sundering

When I first saw this spell, I was so underwhelmed. It's a 6-mana Time Warp with a legendary restriction that also exiles itself. Why? After that, I just left it alone, I didn't even want to try and brew with it. All I could think of was, "Why can't wizards just give us Time Warp? That's the only extra turn card I want."

Then slowly overtime I thought about it more and more. When you usually cast a Time Warp type of card, you're either forced to play it early to catch up with your opponent or you're taking an extra turn with cards like Bounty of the Luxa, Howling Mine, or planeswalkers. Well, those times you're trying to catch up to your opponent's battlefield, Karn's Temporal Sundering really shines. Honestly, it can act like a Time Stretch if you're bouncing a big permanent like The Scarab God. Then it just becomes Time Stretch with cards like Primal Wellspring, Swarm Intelligence, and The Mirari Conjecture. Thankfully it also targeted you so if your opponent bounces or kills the non-land permanent you target with Karn's Temporal Sundering, the spell won't get countered. It slowly overtime grew on me.

The legendary creatures you're going to want to play are things like Kefnet the Mindful, Baral, Chief of Compliance, Tatyova, Benthic Druid, Nezahal, Primal Tide, or Rashmi, Eternities Crafter. Then of course you have planeswalkers like Nissa, Vital Force, Nissa, Steward of Elements, Dovin Baan, or Karn, Scion of Urza.

As you can see, I'm more excited about the card and what I might be able to accomplish with it.

1. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria

All right, I saved the best for last. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria. His plus ability is powerful, it essentially makes Teferi only cost three mana. So many times, as a control deck you don't want to tap out and you want to hold up countermagic when you can. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria helps eliminate that problem. Feel free to main phase Glimmer of Genius, it's basically only going to cost you two mana after you pass the turn. That. Is. So. Much. Value. Imagine Chandra, Torch of Defiance not only add rr to your mana pool but also drawing you card, all in one ability.

Teferi's minus ability is how he protects himself. Not only against creatures, but any nonland permanent. You have an annoying Hazoret or The Scarab God to deal with? Tuck it away three cards down. Feel free to mill it with an Ipnu Rivulet so you won't have to deal with it again. You can play him on turn six and still hold up Disallow. How about playing him on turn seven and then holding up a Settle the Wreckage to protect him? Teferi, Hero of Dominaria is great and very flavorful. I love this card and I can't wait to play with it!

There you have it, my favorite top eight cards that have been revealed so far. Dominaria is looking like an extremely fun set with so much nostalgia. We are getting tons of old cards back and even some mechanics like Kicker, but we are also getting so many new things. I personally cannot wait to see what Dominaria has in store for us.

As always, thanks for reading everyone.
