Lurrus Takes Modern Goblins To The Next Level

Reddit

There's no doubt that all basically anyone can talk about when it comes older formats is Lurrus of the Dream-Den.

Lurrus of the Dream-Den

Lurrus bringing back Mishra's Bauble.

Lurrus bringing back Lotus Petal.

Lurrus bringing back Black Lotus.

How broken Lurrus is as a Magic card is pretty clear at this point, but it is going to be the new normal for the foreseeable future in Modern. Building the best Lurrus deck is something that should be on everyone's mind, as well as looking for cheap cards that get a boost from Lurrus. While Lurrus is omnipresent in the format, it does do a fun job of propping up somewhat underpowered synergy decks that are just a little too weak to compete.

Munitions Expert
Knucklebone Witch
Mogg War Marshal

Remember these guys? Well, they're back!

As a card that wants you to play cheap aggressive threats but also is capable of grinding out a longer game, Lurrus does an amazing job at melding the two main ways people build Goblins in Modern - the more traditional grindy Aether Vial Goblins, and the outlandishly aggressive 8-Whack Goblins. While we lose Goblin Matron and Goblin Ringleader, we get to play a nice low aggressive curve backed up by Goblin Bushwhacker and Goblin Grenade, and also play into longer games with the grind that Lurrus, Mishra's Bauble, and Call of the Death-Dweller provides.

Recasting Mogg War Marshal and Munitions Expert over and over again is awesome, as is casting Call of the Death-Dweller to return a Mogg Fanatic with deathtouch!

After a league on stream about a month ago when I built the deck going 4-1 (only losing to two turn one Neoform kills), we'll take a solid 3-2 today.

Slippery Bogle
Lava Spike

Beating Bogles is probably almost impossible and not worth the trouble, but we could definitely consider adding the fourth copy of Collective Brutality to help out the Burn/Prowess matchup. Otherwise the deck performed about as expected. We were able to fire out aggressive starts and end games with Goblin Grenade quickly, but also able to use Lurrus to play into the midgame with no trouble either. There's a ton of sweet interactions and places to get creative as well.

If you love slinging Goblins no matter what the format, Lurrus helps to breathe new life into an exciting new version of the archetype!
