Regarding Magic: The Gathering's Aetherdrift, Blue brings some tricky cards to the game. If you want to spice up a deck and you want to gas up your deck, here are the top 5 Blue cards in the new set.
Unstoppable Plan
Oh no. Of course, a Jace card is going to upset a lot of people. Unstoppable Plan untaps your nonland permanents at your end step. This one will be a staple and works wonders with mounts and vehicles.
Commander: Absolutely. Unstoppable Plan will be an extremely popular card within Blue decks. Untap all your mana rocks, creatures, and artifacts at the end of your turn for just 3 mana. I want to get off "Mr. Beleran's Wild Ride"!
Sealed: This is one of those cards that likely decides the colors you will be running if you pull an Unstoppable Plan. The utility to make full use of your board and still keep bodies up for blocking is way more powerful.
Constructed: Yes, Unstoppable Plan will see Constructed play. There is a very popular Dimir deck in Standard right now that would love the ability to untap at the end of a turn. This will be a card that will find itself in most decks that can use it.
Mu Yanling, Wind Rider
Whenever I look at a legendary creature, I ask myself "What does this bring to the table?" In the case of Mu Yanling, Wind Rider, this desparked Planeswalker (check out her fractured Planeswalker icon) does quite a lot.
Commander: I could see Mu Yanling, Wind Rider become a popular card in Commander. Will she be a solid pick to helm decks? Possibly. The flying vehicles sound like a real headache. The card draw will be fantastic. Bounce her a few times and she'll be Shorikai, Genesis Engine's best bud.
Sealed: With Aetherdrift's vehicle and mount-based strategy, Mu Yanling is going to be a solid addition. Her cost will give you plenty of time to ready up your board state after pelting your opponent with flying cars and cats, you'll have some extra cards in hand as well.
Constructed: This may be Mu Yanling, Wind Rider's weakest area of focus. Since vehicles aren't a major contributor in normal constructed play, she may not do much here. However, if all these new vehicles from Aetherdrift change the meta, she'd find a home here too.
Vnwxt, Verbose Host
This goofy goober provides some card advantage while being a decent blocker. Vnwxt, Verbose Host doesn't do much but provides support in every format.
Commander: Vnwxt, Verbose Host is one part Reliquary Tower and one part personal Howling Mine. Blue loves card draw and at Max Speed, he will double any card draw you get. If he's on the field, he'll keep your hand size unlimited, he could work in the 99 or as your Commander.
Sealed: Oh, our little one-eyed pal works just fine in sealed. He's tough enough to block low-cost threats, and he's going to synergize with any card draw. Use Vnwxt, Verbose Host to keep mana in hand and your best cards on the board.
Constructed: You know what? Yeah, I think Vnwxt could find a place in Constructed. Card draw is always a bonus and most decks that use Blue will land enough times that you can get Max Speed quickly.
Riverchurn Monument
It doesn't matter if you want to run graveyard strats or just want to foil your opponent's plans, mill works. Riverchurn Monument is a fantastic artifact that does it better than most. With its Exhaust ability, you can double the size of anyone's graveyard.
Commander: A 2-drop artifact that can mill on demand? Not bad. Pair Riverchurn Monument with something like Unwinding Clock or Unstoppable Plan and you may be milling a lot more. This is a great way to mill an opponent or fill up your graveyard. Greasefang, Okiba Boss will love this.
Sealed: You may be running a 40-card deck in Sealed. You can take a sizeable bite out of your opponent's deck with one mana. Riverchurn Monument is a useful way to spoil key pieces of a limited puzzle.
Constructed: There are a lot of decks that benefit from having your cards in a graveyard. Riverchurn Monument will shine in these decks. It will be a standout for discard and mill deck strategies too. This will be a decent card for the format.
Waxen Shapethief
Waxen Shapethief can be any creature or artifact you own. I love the idea of this card because it can do a lot with the flash ability too. Imagine losing a key creature or artifact to targeted removal and cloning it on the way out.
Commander: Ha! You can clone any artifact or creature you own. The possibilities are endless. Waxen Shapethief can clone your best cards, or with a few tricks, your opponent's cards too. I expect to see this card a lot in Commander very soon.
Sealed: With Waxen Shapethief you can make a copy of your favorite nonlegendary card on the field or copy an artifact for double the fun. This will be a great addition to a sealed deck and provide value.
Constructed: I'm excited to see what will happen with on-demand clones in these formats. Waxen Shapethief may not be the cheapest card, but the added fact that it enters as the copy is worth considering, especially since have some nice Entering the Battlefield triggers on the card you are copying.
There are our top five Blue cards for Aetherdrift. It's worth noting that there will be diamonds in the rough, but the mechanics on these cards are solid, so pick them up early!
