The Top Five Black Cards in Aetherdrift

Reddit

Black is a color that focuses on removing and weakening creatures. In Magic: The Gathering's Aetherdrift, this part of the color wheel continues to focus on its strengths, with a few new tricks up its sleeves. Here are our top five cards in Aetherdrift.

The Last Ride

It's like the old saying goes, "Life is a resource." The Last Ride turns that resource into a card draw and discard if you really need it. Then, when your life gets low, you have a vehicle that gets progressively stronger. Not a bad card for Black.

Commander: In Commander, The Last Ride is going to be a late-game card when it comes to using it to attack or block. The strength of this card lies in the ability to control your own life while also adding cards to your hand. If you use Sheoldred, The Apocalypse, you only have to pay the mana cost.

Sealed: The Last Ride synergizes extremely well with the other cards in Aetherdrift. Giving yourself the ability to put something as big as a 12/12 on the battlefield to land a finishing blow is great. Keeping your hand full, or making the most out of discard mechanics is handy too.

Constructed: The Dimir Midrange deck that is tearing up most Constructed formats will really like The Last Ride. With the ability to draw cards on demand and the reliance on Sheoldred, The Apocalypse, it can put it to work. When you start getting low, crew this spooky car up with 2 power and swing hard.

Bloodghast

He's baaaaaaaaack! Then he's back again, and so on. Bloodghast is an ultra-popular card that is a reprint in Aetherdrift. For bb you get a card that is an absolute pain that won't stay dead as long as you have a land to play.

Commander: Bloodghast already is a popular card in Commander. With its inclusion in Aetherdrift, a whole new generation of players will get their hands on it. Landfall decks love this card.

Sealed: Without a doubt, Bloodghast is a card worth including in any Sealed game, as long as you can pull it. You can play the card as early as turn two and it makes a great blocker and a constant nuisance. Get a few on the board and it's gonna be rough for your opponent.

Constructed: Graveyard strategies are a real thing in some of the most popular Constructed deck metas. Bloodghast serves as a blocker, attacker, and even sacrifice or discard fodder. It's been a popular card in the past and will be again in the future.

The Speed Demon

Card draw makes the world go around in Magic: The Gathering. The Speed Demon is a beefy 5/5 legendary creature that creates a ton of it at the cost of your life while also being a decent battlefield threat.

Commander: This card is going to be something that could find some popularity in Commander. The Speed Demon doesn't care about Max Speed so it provides value the turn it is cast. The flying and trample make it even more valuable.

Sealed: The Speed Demon is all about give and take. By the time you have five mana to cast it, you will likely need more cards in hand. You can use it to trade some life for card advantage while throwing it out of any annoying creatures coming your way.

Constructed: Sheoldred, The Apocalypse is a popular card in Constructed formats. If you add The Speed Demon into the mix, it will give you a net gain of health every time it triggers. It won't be a mainstay, but it's pretty rad.

Momentum Breaker

I love the utility of this card. Momentum Breaker is a 1b that makes your opponents sacrifice a creature or vehicle and also kicks off Start Your Engines! Once you have two mana to spare, you can sacrifice the enchantment to gain up to four health.

Commander: This is a great card for Tergrid, God of Fear // Tergrid's Lantern. For just two mana, you can make your opponents either sacrifice a vehicle or creature. Momentum Breaker isn't targeted so it does get around hexproof and indestructible as well. When the time comes to get a little extra life, you can use it to also ping a little more damage with something like Enduring Tenacity.

Sealed: If there were only an easy way to get rid of those pesky gods like Hazoret, Godseeker or Ketramose, the New Dawn. With the right board control, Momentum Breaker does it with ease. Gaining back 20% of your starting life is the icing on the cake.

Constructed: Black has a lot of ways to punish your opponents when you gain life. It's a viable strategy in both Modern and Standard. Having a few Momentum Breaker cards in a deck will not only net you some extra health but synergize with these mechanics.

Grim Bauble

There are some more valuable cards in the Black Aetherdrift offerings but there aren't many poised to make an immediate impact in every major format. Grim Bauble is a b artifact that gives a target creature -2/-2 until the end of the turn. You can then tap it, spend 2b, and sacrifice it later to surveil 2.

Commander: I am already seeing this card in Commander. It works as fantastic removal for early game creatures or mana dorks. Grim Bauble allows you to selectively place at least two cards into your graveyard or get the draw you need.

Sealed: Grim Bauble is a pretty tricky card in Limited formats. There are a lot of 2 toughness creatures that can get zapped by a good play. When you are working with a 40-card deck, the ability to control the next cards on the draw is a great advantage as well.

Constructed: The most recent pro tour games actually featured Grim Bauble. That is a big deal because the set was still effective in the pre-release stages. It's a devastating card for Red prowess or aggro decks, effectively deletes most fairies, and costs next to nothing.

Unlike many other colors I've covered to this point, the top five Black Aetherdrift cards led to a lot of decisions. Some cards were in the discussion but were also too niche. This set features a lot of cool cards with the Black color identity and an interesting Commander choice in Gonti, Night Minister, who just missed the cut!
