The Top 5 Multicolored Cards in Aetherdrift

Reddit

Magic: The Gathering had a design philosophy in mind when they worked on Aetherdrift. With all the different abilities that are found in this set, the real synergy comes into play when multicolored cards are added to the mix. Here are the top five cards from the set.

Brightglass Gearhulk

Brightglass Gearhulk

Aetherdrift brought the return of the gearhulks to Magic: The Gathering. Traditionally, these cards could shape your game on entry, and Brightglass Gearhulk is no exception. For ggww, you get a 4/4 creature with first strike, trample, and the ability to tutor some cheap cards from your library.

Commander: Want to get that Sol Ring out of your library and onto the board? How about that Mana Vault or Chrome Mox? Brightglass Gearhulk is an extremely good commander card and is already seeing a ton of play. Artifact decks love it!

Standard: Aetherdrift really is bringing artifacts back to standard and Brightglass Gearhulk is already a popular inclusion. On top of that, you can also tutor out some value pieces, like Pawpatch Recruiter or Nurturing Pixie. Having a few of these cards can be a nightmare for your opponent.

Limited: All of the gearhulks are a lynchpin for limited. With some fantastic 1-drop cards in the set, Brightglass Gearhulk is going to put in work. It's strong enough to be an imposing blocker and attacker as well.

Ketramose, the New Dawn

Ketramose, the New Dawn

There are always a few cards in each set that are the "it" cards. In Aeitherdrift that honor goes to Ketramose, the New Dawn. What makes this card stand out is that it immediately has a place in all formats. With lifelink, menace, and indestructible, this 4/4 god brings a lot to the table for only 1wb.

Commander: Ketramose, the New Dawn is going to be popular in Commander for sure. With Orzhov (bw) being very heavy on exiling cards, it's going to have plenty of support as well. With the last ability on the card, you can easily punish opponents by exiling cards too.

Standard: While Ketramose, the New Dawn didn't tear it up at the latest pro tour, it was present. There are a lot of cards that make use of its abilities, and I do see it potentially becoming a staple. Especially with how popular Temporary Lockdown is.

Limited: This is probably the weakest area for Ketramose, the New Dawn. It's still a devastating card, but you do need a few pieces to get the machine running. Even with that being said, this card is chock full of utility.

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

I won't lie; I have some favorite cards from Aetherdrift. Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied is easily one of those cards. This new god has reach, trample, and indestructible and gets stronger every turn you have while also creating passive card draw. While not the cheapest card, for 3gu you can do a lot worse.

Commander: Counters and card draw? Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied will find some cozy spots in the world of Commander. With certain token doublers, you can also lock her into either attack mode or card draw mode as well.

Standard: Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied is an effective card in Simic (ug) but is a little expensive. Due to how much of a threat she can be, I can still see her get some play. Especially with how beefy Simic cards can be.

Limited: If you are playing any form of Limited and get Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied, congratulations! She's a powerhouse in this format and will easily tilt the game in your favor. Using her to run through your opponent's defenses is a great idea!

Mendicant Core, Guidelight

Mendicant Core, Guidelight

This little guy can be a huge issue if left unchecked. Mendicant Core, Guidelight is a (wu) Azorious legendary that gets stronger with each artifact you control. When you hit max speed, it also offers the ability to copy artifacts as well. It's a doozy.

Commander: Someone really looked at the state of Magic: The Gathering and said, lets give artifacts some more love. In all seriousness, Mendicant Core, Guidelight fits in the format well as either a Commander or as part of your 99.

Standard: Azorius (uw) Artifacts rocketed to viability with the introduction of Aetherdrift. The meta for this strategy is still gaining momentum and Mendicant Core, Guidelight is a card that can turn a game into a one-sided bloodbath.

Limited: Aetherdrift is so packed with artifacts that Mendicant Core, Guidelight is an easy auto-include. With the ability to grow with every vehicle and thopter you get out, it can function as a finisher or just a way to build your board.

The Verge Lands

Bleachbone Verge
Riverpyre Verge
Sunbillow Verge
Wastewood Verge
Willowrush Verge

I needed to include all five "verge-lands" on this list. Each one of these lands enters untapped for one color and then taps for a second color if you control a land type within the color identity. For example, Sunbillow Verge can tap for one w, but if you control a Plains or Mountain, it also taps forr. Introduced in Duskmourn the "verge-lands" are a great way to have the mana you need.

Commander: You already know! These lands are sought after for a reason. Depending on your Commander's color identity one or more of these verge-lands should be in your deck. The ability to enter untapped makes it that much better.

Standard: These lands are perfect for when you want to consider splashing another color into your deck. They won't slow you down like "tap-lands" will and are easier to get your hands on as well.

Limited: With these lands in your hands, you have some great ways to get the cards you want to play out. Much like Standard, the "verge-lands" can give you a great opportunity to fix your mana pool or splash in an extra color for a little surprise.

There are a lot of multicolored cards in Aetherdrift. I think that all the gearhulks are really good, but don't all have strong places in all formats. There are also some really nasty Commander nominees as well. Aetherdrift is a set with a lot of variety and can work in a lot of places. Don't forget to pick up the best cards for your decks!
