Since its debut back in Urza's Saga, Sneak Attack has become a staple for Red Commander decks. From showing up in Constructed formats back in the day, to becoming an all-star in Casual formats like Five-Color, this card has made its mark on the game.
Today, we're taking a look at the best Commanders for Sneak Attack.
This classic Red Enchantment costs us four mana (![]()
) and grants the ability to put a Creature card from our hand onto the Battlefield (with Haste) for only a single mana. Of course, we do have to sacrifice the Creature at the beginning of the next End Step, but that's far from a downside.
Repeatedly cheating Creatures into play for a single Red mana, and at Instant speed, shouldn't be underestimated. Getting a massive discount on a Creature with a highly impactful Enters-the-battlefield ability or attack trigger is exciting enough on its own. Sneaking in a Blightsteel Colossus for a potential one-hit K.O. on an opponent via poison counters is a big game.
Of course, if the Creatures we sneak in are destined to be sacrificed anyway, we should sacrifice them for our benefit. Powerful sacrifice outlets like Phyrexian Altar or Goblin Bombardment can give us additional advantage from our doomed Creatures. Sneak Attack actually pairs well with Greater Good (Top Commanders for Greater Good), drawing a huge amount of cards.
And we haven't even touched on Sneak Attack's ability to help fill our graveyard for some mass recursion shenanigans with something like Living Death.
This Red Enchantment is powerful and flexible, so let's take a look at the Commanders that can best make use of it.
Best Commanders for Sneak Attack
5. Rivaz of the Claw & Bladwing the Risen
Rivaz of the Claw is a three-drop 3/3 with Menace in Rakdos ![]()
. It can tap for two mana in any combination of colors, but that mana can only be used to cast Dragon Creature spells.
Once during each of our turns, we get to cast a Dragon Creature spell from our graveyard. That sounds pretty good, but the Dragons we cast this way do get exiled when they die.
Bladewing the Risen is a 4/4 Zombie Dragon with Flying for ![]()
![]()
![]()
![]()
. When it Enters, we get to return a Dragon permanent card from our graveyard to the battlefield. It also lets us pay ![]()
to give all of our Dragons +1/+1 until the end of the turn.
Both Rivaz and Bladewing want us to have Dragons in our graveyard, which could happen naturally over the course of a game. Or, we could cheat a little with Sneak Attack to get a Hasty extra attack from our Dragons before we inevitably raise them from the dead.
4. Brion Stoutarm
Brion Stoutarm is a four-drop 4/4 with Lifelink in Boros ![]()
. He can tap for a single
to sacrifice another Creature and deal damage equal to that Creature's power to target player.
It's easy to love Brion's ability since it gains us a ton of life thanks to his Lifelink, and it's a perfect way for us to get maximum value from our doomed Sneak Attack Creatures.
3. Arthur, Marigold Knight
Arthur, Marigold Knight is a five-drop Jeskai ![]()
![]()
4/5 with Haste. Whenever Arthur attacks along with another Creature, we get to look at the top six cards of our library and put a Creature from among them onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.
Unlike other cards with this kind of ability, like Kaalia of the Vast, the Creature doesn't stick around. It bounces back to our hand at the end of combat. That means we'll have a steady stream of Creatures in hand to Sneak Attack into play and help trigger Arthur to keep repeating the process.
2. Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm
Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm is up next. This 6/6 Dragon Spirit for ![]()
![]()
![]()
has Flying and Ward
, but we really care about its ability.
When our non-token Dragons enter the battlefield under our control, we get to create a free non-Legendary token copy of them. With Sneak Attack and Miirym in play, we get to put expensive Dragons out for cheap, and make token copies of them that stick around after we sacrifice the original.
1. Obeka, Brute Chronologist
Obeka, Brute Chronologist is a 3/4 Grixis ![]()
![]()
four-drop that can tap to have the player whose turn it currently is end the turn if they choose to.
If timed correctly, with the Sneak Attack sacrifice trigger on the stack, Obeka's ability will let us keep our Sneak Attack'd Creatures around. Planning to resurrect your fallen Creatures is one thing, but keeping them around without the extra step of raising them from the dead is the power combo.
Honorable Mentions
Be'lakor, the Dark Master
Be'lakor, the Dark Master is a six-drop 6/5 Demon with Flying that Enters and draws us cards and loses us life equal to the number of Demons we control. Then, as other Demons Enter, we can have them deal damage equal to their power to any target.
That second ability is great with Sneak Attack since Be'lakor can help fill our hand and then we can power out Demons that smack our opponents when they enter. Then Haste will let our Demons attack and finish our opponents off.
Neriv, Heart of the Storm
Neriv, Heart of the Storm is a four-drop 4/5 Flying Spirit Dragon. If our Creatures that entered this turn deal damage, they'll deal twice as much damage instead. That's bonkers with the Haste granted by Sneak Attack, letting our Creatures hit twice as hard when we sneak them into play.
Feldon of the Third Path
Feldon of the Third Path is a three-drop 2/3 Mono-Red Creature that taps for ![]()
to create a token copy of a Creature in our graveyard, except it's an Artifact Creature in addition to its other types. It has Haste and is sacrificed at the beginning of the next End Step.
We can drop a Creature into play with Sneak Attack, attack with it thanks to Haste, and then we can copy it post-death repeatedly.
Ziatora, the Incinerator
Ziatora, the Incinerator is a six-drop Jund ![]()
![]()
Demon Dragon with a 6/6 Flying body. At the beginning of our end step, we can sacrifice a Creature to have Ziatora deal damage equal to the sacrificed Creature's power to any target. We also create three Treasure tokens.
Having sac outlets for our doomed Sneak Attack Creatures is always welcome, and the reward for using Ziatora is pretty sizable.
Conclusion
Sneak Attack is a versatile and powerful tool for all sorts of Red strategies in Commander.
Whether you plan to fill your graveyard for mass reanimation, take advantage of sac outlets, or just cheat massive threats into play for a quick blitz attack, Sneak Attack can do it all on the cheap.
That much power and flexibility in one convenient package is too good to be ignored.
