Marvel Super Heroes Previews - Wakanda Forever

Reddit

Today marks the final day of individual card previews for the latest Magic: the Gathering release, Marvel Super Heroes. After two intense weeks of previews, we finally get to see the last of the four Commander precons for this set.

This time, the deck in question is the Wakanda Forever precon, previewed by Tabletop Jocks. As you might imagine, this deck leans all into the Black Panther character and the various peoples of the fictional, highly advanced nation of Wakanda.

Naturally, the deck is helmed by T'Challa, the Black Panther. T'Challa has become a fan favorite over the years, especially following his critical appearances throughout various films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanks to the technologically advanced nature of Wakanda, his card, as well as many others in this deck, revolve around Artifacts and growing in strength from them.

Thanks to the deck's two-color nature, being only Green and White (aka Selesnya), there are many options for alternate Commanders as well. Three of these options were revealed very early in the preview season as part of the Debut Stream. Each of Okoye, Mighty and Adored, Shuri, the Black Panther, and Storm, Queen of Wakanda are fantastic options should you seek to change it up and do something just a little bit different.

This is just a small sampling of all the cool stuff hiding in this precon. Let's check out the decklist and then look at some of the individual cards.

The People of Wakanda

Unlike the majority of the other precons prior to this, Wakanda Forever isn't necessarily all-in on Hero cards or Villain cards. In fact, aside from the previously mentioned Commander options, there are very few Heroes to be found here. Instead, it leans into the people and culture of Wakanda.

In addition to those previously mentioned Commander options are two more options as well.

You can opt to play as the former king and Black Panther in T'Chaka, Venerable King. This is a very interesting option if you do so, as you can choose to put him in your graveyard when he dies to use his exile ability to become the Monarch. Then, when you do, he'll go back to your Command Zone where you can cast him once again.

Your other option is Bast, Panther Goddess, the patron deity of the Wakandan people. She is an outstandingly powerful threat if you get her online. The more you build your board, the more dangerous she becomes, providing a great way to be the Aggro player if you want to try a simpler approach for a change.

Three other characters, Nakia, Wakandan Operative, W'Kabi, Shield of the Nation, and Zuri, Warrior of Wakanda, are all represented as Heroes here.

Both W'Kabi and Zuri lean further into the deck's Artifact synergies, providing you with strong threats the deeper you go on the strategy. Nakia also gives your board additional boosts and can turn you into the Monarch in a pinch with whoever you choose to play as your Commander.

Several other Legendary Creatures aren't Heroes, as they're simply people associated with Wakanda.

You don't ever see Queen Mother Ramonda on the battlefield, but she's always there to give support as she does here by making you the Monarch and guarding you from attacks. M'Baku, Jabari Chieftain is similarly an adversary of T'Challa and cares more about taking the throne for himself and his people, which is reflected expertly on his card.

You might be wondering why Everett K. Ross, Hapless Attache is here, but he's great at carrying people around. This allows him to play another support role, offering your Commander a strong buff and drawing you plenty of cards the longer he sticks around.

A handful of additional non-Legendary Creatures are here as well. These include Dora Milaje Elite, Harut Zaraze Strike Force, and Panther Robot, the latter of which is one heck of a huge threat on its own.

The real dangerous card among these, though, is easily Harut Zaraze Strike Force. The deeper you go into the game, the more times you're likely to copy it. As you do, you'll not only swarm the board with plenty of bodies, but also destroy lots of Artifacts and Enchantments on your opponents' side of the field.

New Spells

In addition to all of the new Creature cards in this deck, there are a number of fantastic new spells as well.

Naturally, with all of the advanced technologies of Wakanda, highly sophisticated Equipment, which makes for plenty of solid options for your deck.

Midnight Angel Armor is fun in that it essentially generates a Serra Angel when it comes into play, but then later can turn any of your bigger Creatures into an even bigger threat. Vibranium Strike Gauntlets can also give you the element of surprise, dealing lots of damage and drawing you plenty of cards over a number of turns.

The most powerful one here is easily the Panther Habit, or the suit worn by the Black Panther. Naturally, such an Equipment would be powerful, but it's almost stunning just how good it is. Not only does it make whatever it's equipped to nigh impossible to kill, but it makes that Creature huge in the process. Good luck dealing with this one.

As an additional element of the advanced Wakandan civilization, they naturally utilize a number of powerful Vehicles. You can take the Royal Talon Fighter Jet to make a huge threat that swarms the board with tokens or use the Vibranium Mining Mech to slowly ramp yourself up with a huge threat. If you ramp enough, you can eventually reach the N'Yami-Class Mother Ship and start pulling huge threats off the top of your deck.

Many memorable Black Panther moments are also represented as spells in this deck. Ancestral Communion depicts T'Challa reconnecting with his ancestors and Fight for the Throne depicts the ritualistic battle to lay claim to the Wakandan Monarchy. And, of course, what deck named Wakanda Forever! would be complete without a namesake spell for players to shout as they find a powerful threat for your opponents to contend with?

In addition to a variety of cool new spells, there's also a single new Land card. The Great Mound allows you to continue fueling out your big Artifacts while also drawing you more cards in the late game. Better still, the Vibranium tokens you make can also help fuel the card draw ability if you're all out of Artifacts. Not a bad card for Artifact decks of all kinds.

Awesome Reprints

As with all of the Marvel Super Heroes Commander decks, Wakanda Forever is positively loaded with stellar reprints.

In a very Artifact and Equipment-heavy deck, it's no surprise that two of the most expensive reprints here are Equipment cards. Helm of the Host and Hammer of Nazahn (here reskinned as Black Panther's Claws) are top tier options for any list of this nature. Each currently sits a little over $10, making for an outstanding set of reprint inclusions.

The deck also has a somewhat surprising inclusion of Birds of Paradise. This card shines best in a deck with many colors to best take advantage of its ability. However, it's a perfect opportunity to give it an all-new, highly thematic rendition in its art. Kevin Sidharta does a great job of bringing to life a more African bird and gives another high demand reprint in the process.

There's plenty of more mid-level reprints as well. Sword of the Animist (reskinned as Skybreaker, Sword of Bashenga) is a great example of this, acting as a modestly priced card that you'll never be unhappy to see more copies of. The same is true for a variety of cards like Conduit of Worlds, Greater Good, Divine Visitation, and Scourglass (reskinned as Orbital Vibranium Bomb).

The one that really caught my eye, though, was easily Loyal Retainers. For many years, this card was a hot commodity for Commander players everywhere. Since its reprinting in Commander Masters leveled out its price, it's much more reasonable for it to be reprinted in a precon like this. Nevertheless, it's still a wild feat to see it here given just how long it went without a reprint throughout the 2010s and into the current decade.

As with each of this set's Commander decks, there are a set of Commander staples with new art themed exclusively off of this deck. That means that if you buy this deck, you'll get sweet new Wakanda and Black Panther-themed copies of Arcane Signet, Sol Ring, and Command Tower. That alone makes this an easy pickup for any die-hard fan of this beloved series.

Unlike most of the precons for this set, the Wakanda Forever deck is only two colors instead of three colors. That means that while another Battlebond land makes an appearance in Bountiful Promenade, there's not much interesting things on the Dual Lands side of things aside from maybe a new art for Razorverge Thicket.

The one somewhat unexpected reprint here is Throne of the High City. It's not a terribly expensive card, but it is a cool one that's only been printed three times before this. It's also a very fitting inclusion given the deck's Monarch sub-theme by granting you an easy way to take the crown for yourself.

Conclusion

That wraps things up for this final day of previews, and what a great one it was!

The Wakanda Forever deck is packed with awesome designs and a fantastic selection of reprints, making it an excellent pickup whether you're a fan or not. It really does a great job of highlighting what's made several of these precons look so fun: simplicity, yet depth within that simplicity.
