Heroes in a half shell have invaded the singleton shell of Commander.
If you grew up watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles argue about pizza toppings between roundhouse kicks, then this new set feels like an awesome blast from Saturday Mornings past.
The Best Red Cards for Commander from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Red, appropriately, is where the chaos lives. It goes deeper than the color of Raphael's bandana (though there is a Raphael card on this list) as Red in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gives us cool toys to insert in our Commander decks.
So today, we're diving into the best Red cards from the TMNT set for Commander.
Cool but Rude
Class enchantments are back! For ![]()
, you get the following.
- Attack trigger looting
- Level 2: ping each opponent whenever you discard
- Level 3: tutor for a library card into hand (with a random discard) a.k.a Gamble
This is a lot of upside for two mana. The first two levels are a permanent boon given that its passive ability gives you card selection and damage. The tutor ability is sooo good too... as long as the chance of discarding doesn't set you back.
Is this card cool? Yes.
Rude? Absolutely.
Cards that Synergize with Cool but Rude.
- Containment Construct - Turn those discards into playable value.
- Glint-Horn Buccaneer - Discard pings stack up fast.
- Monument to Endurance - Synergizes so well with all of Cool but Rude's abilities.
Broadcast Takeover
Stealing stuff temporarily is a staple in the Red playbook. For four mana, you gain control of all artifacts your opponents control until end of turn. Untap them. They gain haste.
In Commander, artifacts are everywhere. Mana rocks. Equipment. Treasure tokens. Clues. Food. And most of the time, artifact creature tokens.
Broadcast Takeover is a one-turn heist movie.
Cards that Synergize with Broadcast Takeover.
- Hellkite Tyrant - Steal every artifact, then win.
- Mycosynth Lattice - Steal everything for one turn.
- Krark-Clan Ironworks - Sacrifice everything you stole for mana. No one gets their toys back!
Casey Jones, Vigilante
Casey Jones is a shot of adrenaline - temporary but can get you there. When he enters, you get a fresh grip of three additional cards. Then, next upkeep, you lose three cards.
It ain't really card advantage but, the three new cards give you more options for that turn you really need to turn the corner. You see more cards. You dig into your pieces. And with the discard, you can also set up graveyard plays.
Cards that Synergize with Casey Jones, Vigilante.
- Conspiracy Theorist - Discarding the three cards doesn't mean its the end of them with this creature on board.
- Bag of Holding - Turn the randomness into future reload.
- Underworld Breach - In higher power lists, the extra three cards can be game changing. With Underworld Breach, you get to recast the three cards Casey threw away.
Slash, Reptile Rampager
If you've ever played with Purphoros, God of the Forge then you know that 2 damage per creature entering your side of the table stacks up fast. For one more mana, you get a 7/5 that makes tokens when it attacks and rewards you for going wide. Sure, Slash isn't indestructible but it doesn't need devotion to be able to attack.
What Slash, Reptile Rampager has over Purphoros, is that it can make its own tokens to feed the enters trigger.
Cards that Synergize with Slash, Reptile Rampager.
- Impact Tremors - Stack the damage engines.
- Song of Totentanz - Get X tokens onto the battlefield and deal X times 2 damage to everyone else.
- Krenko, Mob Boss - Because subtlety is overrated.
Raphael, Ninja Destroyer
You knew it was coming, right? I told you Raph-a-roni is part of this list. Raphael is raw, aggressive, and very, very Red. First off, he's great in combat as he's decently statted at 4/4 and must be blocked if able. Then, his Enrage ability gives you mana for how much damage is dealt to Raphael.
This is where the real spice is.
You can block him, ping him, fight with him, and suddenly you're swimming in Red mana mid-combat.
Here's the wild part - because the mana persists through phases, you can float absurd amounts of mana to pump into big x spells like Crackle with Power, Jaya's Immolating Inferno, or even just good ol' Fireball.
He turns damage into fuel. Just make sure to make him indestructible.
Cards that Synergize with Raphael, Ninja Destroyer.
- Blasphemous Act - turn 13 damage into 13 mana.
- Pyrohemia - Repeatable enrage triggers.
- Stuffy Doll - Build a damage-based engine around it.
Shell Shocked (In a Good Way)
Magic: The Gathering, through its Universes Beyond efforts, has given Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans who are Red players strong cardboard considerations for their 99.
These cards are flavor wins through and through. And, what's more, all of them accelerate the typically effective Red stratagems - stealing en masse, looting, getting large dumps of mana, and being a menace to the table in general.
Red in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the hot sauce to the pizza pie that is Commander.
