The Best Gold Cards from Final Fantasy for Commander

Reddit

So, the Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy set is out, and no one is surprised that the multicolored legends are absolute flavor bombs. But what is somewhat surprising? That some of these cards aren't just thematic tributes - they're Commander powerhouses. My picks contain cards that has the cEDH community abuzz and some that might start their own mini-archetypes. Just a quick glance at the multicolored cards in this crossover pack a materia-tier punch. The fact that most of these are legendary creatures are actually a plus for Commander players as it unlocks the option of running them at the helm or in the 99.

We've already gone over the top green, black, red, white, and blue picks from the set. Now it's time to look at the rainbow end of the spectrum - the multicolored cards that will absolutely change up how you build in Commander.

Vivi Ornitier

Vivi Ornitier

The moment this little black mage (that's what they are called in the Final Fantasy universe!) was spoiled, the cEDH forums ignited like he cast Firaga on the meta. Vivi Ornitier generates mana equal to his power every turn, Blue or Red, and only costs Three mana. That's borderline busted before you even consider his second ability: growing himself and pinging the table every time you cast a noncreature spell.

This is extreme levels of value with a free mana battery strapped on. Play him in spellslinger decks, or just break symmetry with cards like Jeska's Will, Deflecting Swat, and bonus spike points for Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter shenanigans.

Kefka, Court Mage // Kefka, Ruler of Ruin

Kefka, Court Mage // Kefka, Ruler of Ruin

If you like drawing cards and watching the world burn, Kefka's your guy. He's Grixis, he's flying, and he's a mean group slug machine. But his real power comes from that passive after he transforms: every time an opponent loses life during your turn, you draw that many cards.

Yes, that includes ping damage. Yes, that includes combat. This makes him the ultimate payoff for decks running ping effects (like Impact Tremors or Guttersnipe), or wheels with Underworld Dreams-style punishes. You can even go group slug and turn life loss into your personal brainstorm party.

Staples? Try: Waste Not and Monument to Endurance to take him in a discard direction, Pyrohemia or Pestilence to control your draws, or Psychosis Crawler for an infinite combo win.

Yuna, Hope of Spira

Yuna, Hope of Spira

If you're a fan of enchantment subtypes sagas or constellation decks, Yuna gives you a reason to sleeve up your Enchantress staples again. She buffs your enchantment creatures during your turn with trample, lifelink, and ward 2 - (because apparently value wasn't enough) then brings back enchantments from the grave at the end step with a Finality counter that lets them stick around until they get exiled.

In other words, Yuna is White-Green reanimation for enchantments. Think Nylea's Colossus, Eidolon of Blossoms, Elspeth Conquers Death - anything that wants to come back and party once more.

Magic: the Gathering - Final Fantasy even brought us the new summon sagas like Summon: Yojimbo, Summon: Bahamut, and Summon: Knights of Round so you can live out Yuna's pilgrimage on the kitchen table.

Best friends: Sythis, Harvest's Hand, Enchantress's Presence, and Sterling Grove.

Terra, Magical Adept

Terra, Magical Adept

While her front side helps set up with a little mill and enchantment recursion, Terra is secretly a five-color saga commander hiding in a Gruul shell. Because once she uses Trance and flips, her other side (Esper Terra) turns her into an overpowered enchantment maker and a mana battery.

You'll want to play her with all the best sagas across every color Summon: Primal Odin, BInding the Old Gods, The Eldest Reborn, and The Kami War, then flicker, recur, or rebuy them.

Key cards: Mirari's Wake, Garnett, Princess of Alexandria, Rydia, Summoner of Mist, and Esper Origins.

The Wandering Minstrel

The Wandering Minstrel

Okay, the townsfolk joke writes itself, but The Wandering Minstrel is the sleeper hit of this set. He's a five-color commander that untaps all your lands, turns a wide board into a lethal alpha strike, and makes tokens if you control five or more Towns. That last clause sounds narrow, until you realize you're running all five colors and can jam all of the Town cards.

The untap clause alone is enough to slot him into enchantment-based or big mana decks. The +X/+X anthem on demand? Icing on the cake.

Town cards worth running: Starting Town, Reach the Horizon, Balamb Garden, SeeD Academy, and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove.

Oh. Also run Amulet of Vigor and Wayward Swordtooth for extra spice.

Starting Town

Starting Town

This land is quietly one of the best five-color options in Commander from the past few years. It enters untapped early, fixes any color late, and comes with a City of Brass or Mana Confluence tap mode (minus the "every tap hurts" downside).

It's playable in literally any Commander deck. Even two-color ones that want a rainbow land for fixing. Even zero-color ones, if you're feeling spicy with colorless Eldrazi and want to splash in some utility.

The Verdict: Color Me Impressed

The Final Fantasy Commander set has given us more than nostalgia-fueled cardboard. These multicolored cards push design boundaries while offering real Commander deck upgrades. From cEDH-ready legends like Vivi Ornitier to saga engines like Terra, Magical Adept there's something for every playstyle - aggro, enchantress, combo, or pure chaos.
