This is Magic stripped down to its essence: survival, sacrifice, and hoping against all hope that a horde of 2/2 zombies don't trample over your 1/1 weenies.

The Survivors

At the core of the drop are two brand-new legendary creatures: Joel, Resolute Survivor and Ellie, Brick Master.

Two halves of the same heartbeat - one hardened by loss, the other learning what love costs. And in Commander, these two partners can helm your 98 cards as a Jund duo that deals with token and counter production.

Joel, Resolute Survivor

In Magic, Joel, Resolute Survivor embodies Golgari resilience. His design rewards you for sacrificing your creatures. What this means at the table: Joel is an Aristocrats-friendly card advantage engine that wants token bodies entering the woodchipper on every turn, not just yours. The trigger cares about any creature token dying, regardless of controller, so politics and sacrifice tools let you draw on each player's turn and grow Joel into a real clock.

He's a commander that thrives on attrition. You're not racing to win; you're outlasting the inevitable.

• Viscera Seer or Carrion Feeder - free sac outlets to cash in spare tokens at instant speed so you hit Joel's abilities on opponents' turns.
• Bitterblossom and Awakening Zone - steady token factories that keep the fuel coming every upkeep.
• Pitiless Plunderer - turns your token deaths into Treasures that then buy more tokens and more Joel triggers.
• Chatterfang, Squirrel General - doubles up your token output and converts any body into a removal spell. Chatterfang also lets you snipe a token on enemy turns to refresh Joel's once-per-turn draw.

She does not make tokens for you by default, but she juices the table's combat math and keeps pressure off you. With Joel as her partner you gain card advantage when the tokens she creates dies.

Ellie's deck plays fast and dirty. She lives in the red zone, throwing Molotovs made of card advantage.

• Disrupt Decorum and Bloodthirsty Blade - force the table to swing at each other so Ellie keeps spawning Cordyceps tokens.
• Kardur, Doomscourge - classic goad-on-etb in your Rakdos slice that pairs perfectly with Ellie's incentive to attack elsewhere.
• Revenge of Ravens or Marchesa's Decree - punish anyone who points those hordes your way. These tilt combat away from you.
• Curse of Opulence - put it on the scariest opponent to stack another bribe on top of Ellie's token bounty.

Also strong: War Cadence to make blocking impossible, Agitator Ant to bait aggression, Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant if you lean harder into Rakdos draw and goad.

Cabal Ritual ("Cordyceps Excision")

A terrifying reimagining of one of Magic's darkest mana rituals. "Cordyceps Excision" channels fungal infection as power - you dig into the grave to extract another surge of energy. It's beautiful and horrific, capturing the price of survival: life feeding on what's already dead.

Haunted One

If one card in this drop could summarize Joel and Ellie's relationship, it's this. Haunted One gives your commander and team resilience when they should have fallen - a mechanical representation of grief turned into strength. It's a rare enchantment that feels less like protection and more like memory refusing to fade.

Cordyceps Infected Token

A small but striking detail, this token brings the infection to life - a horrifying yet fascinating blend of fungus and flesh. Expect incredible art direction: hollow eyes, pale growths, and spores drifting like snow. Thematically, it's the world itself reclaiming what was once human. Still, I feel like we could have gotten a better card than a token.

Endurance in Every Turn

Joel rewards defense and sacrifice. Ellie rewards risk and improvisation. Haunted One and Cabal Ritual bridge them both - the living and the lost working in tandem to survive.

Every line of play feels fragile and human. You scrape by. You make hard decisions. You endure. It reminds you that even in Magic, victory isn't always about power. Sometimes, it's about who's still standing when the final combat phase ends.
