Marvel Super Heroes Previews - Doom Prevails

Reddit

Things are starting to come to a close for previews of the latest Magic: the Gathering release, Marvel Super Heroes. Following a week of main set and Jumpstart previews, we're quickly plowing through the four Commander decks that accompany the set.

Today's previewed Precon is the Doom Prevails Commander deck. As you might expect, it features Doctor Doom, King of Latveria front and center, seeing as he's one of the most beloved villains in the Marvel stories. Not far behind him is fan favorite Loki, the Deceiver, providing a fun alternate way to helm the deck if you so choose.

Despite the moniker, this deck is hardly just about Doctor Doom. It's all villains all the way down, showcasing a wide variety of Marvel's long line of dastardly evildoers. Sometimes it's fun being bad, and this deck is great at letting you live out your most diabolical fantasies.

Let's check out the list and see what it has to offer:

The Villains

Naturally, the core theme is all of the Villains in the deck. There's a wide range of options and many of them go quite deep.

If you're only a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you'll be happy to see some fan favorite villains along the way here. Killmonger gained a tremendous amount of fame following the release of Black Panther and Helmut Zemo similarly gained a cult following when Captain America: Civil War and later The Falcon and the Winter Soldier released. Both of these characters appear here as well as central Avengers villain Ultron as Ultron, Unlimited.

Even some of the more lesser known Villains are here too. You might be forgiven if you forgot about Iron Monger and Abomination as two of the earliest villains in the MCU, but they definitely make a great showing here as Iron Monger, Sadistic Tycoon and Abomination, World Ravager. Even the slightly less known Klaw, Master of Sound is here to round things out.

Not every character is a well-known all-star, though. If you're only a fan of the MCU, you probably don't know characters like Puppet Master, Red Ghost, or Molecule Man. You may not be familiar, but each is an excellent design for this deck.

Puppet Master, String Puller is all about Goading opposing Creatures. Not only do they get to fight for you, but they benefit you with Treasure tokens in the process as well. Red Ghost, Intangible Genius is great at making tokens as well. Instead of Treasures, you get Apes as you draw more cards. Talk about a rock-solid rate!

The real cool design here, though, is easily Molecule Man. For 6, each of your nonland cards get Miracle 0. That means if you can draw a nonland card every turn, once per turn, you can cast it for free thanks to its Miracle cost. That's a huge game, and is potentially scary for just about any format that can manage to play it.

These are only a small smattering of the many villains in this deck. If you're a fan of the comics, you're sure to have plenty of things to enjoy throughout. After all, how many releases can say they have a character like Stilt-Man, Towering Terror in them?

New Spells

While the Villains certainly take center stage, there are also plenty of awesome new spells that accompany them quite nicely.

A number of these spells lean into Doctor Doom specifically, since he is the face of the deck. Extract Power provides a fun way to steal stuff from your opponents in a way that's felt a lot more Black than it has Blue up until now. While that lets your take stuff from others, Doom's Time Platform allows you to do funny time things by pulling cards out of your graveyard so you can recast them later via Suspend.

One of the more fun options here, though, is easily Archnemesis. This card defines Commander politics to their core and provides you a great way to get back at someone who you feel has decided to make themselves your enemy. It's extremely flavorful and a fantastic inclusion in this deck.

Storylines are a major element of comic books. While many can play up the heroes specifically, some are more about the villains who define them. This is the case for both Kang Dynasty and Age of Ultron, which are famous stories in the Marvel comic books. The sagas are relatively tame compared to the scope of their stories, but still manage to convey their plot succinctly with designs that look super fun to play.

Other spells focus on specific characters. Glorious Purpose, Endless Ranks of HYDRA, and Damocles Base, Sword of Kang each focus on Loki, HYDRA, and Kang, respectively. They're very fun cards, with Glorious Purpose being especially excellent as the lone Plan card in the deck. Not only will it make your Creatures bigger, but it will then allow you to cast other spells for free later down the line.

Awesome Reprints

As with many recent Commander decks, the hype isn't simply in all of the cool new designs. There are tons of great reprints that go alongside them and this one is especially juiced.

Kindred Dominance is an especially massive inclusion in this deck, frequently going for a high price thanks to its intense typal synergies. Similarly, Spark Double is a huge fan favorite thanks to its ability to copy not only Creatures but Planeswalkers as well. This card has also boasted a hefty price tag for some time, which makes it yet another stellar reprint.

Thanks to having only one real printing, Currency Converter held a similarly high price thanks to being a popular staple in not only Commander but Cube as well. However, its price crashed quite a bit with the release of Secrets of Strixhaven. The card returning once more ensures it's much more accessible for anyone looking to get up to some serious nonsense.

In addition those highlight, we have several of the usual suspects when it comes to reprints in Commander decks. That's not to say they're unwelcome, because they're still worth enough that more copies entering circulation is always an excellent thing.

Black Market Connections is case in point. It's a card that has been reprinted numerous times between The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Assassin's Creed, but despite this continues to command a very high price tag. A fresh printing like this should bring that price down quite a bit.

Cards like Toxic Deluge, Skullclamp, and Propaganda are reprinted extremely often in these decks. Despite this, they consistently hover in the $5-10 range, making for yet another round of outstanding reprints. It's amost astounding just how much value this deck has inside it.

As with the prior two revealed decks, copies of Arcane Signet, Sol Ring, and Command Tower each come with their own new art. These arts match the theme of the deck the many villains of the Marvel universe.

The deck also has some solid Land choices. Once again, this list has the welcome inclusion of a Battlebond Dual Land, Luxury Suite, and many of the newer Commander Dual Lands show up here again.

Unlike the prior two decks, which featured great Land reprints like Plaza of Heroes and Fabled Passage, there isn't much like that here. That makes the Lands a little more disappointing, but given the quality of the rest of the deck that really isn't much of an issue.

Conclusion

It's safe to say that if you're looking to play the bad guy in your group, you're going to be hard pressed to find a better option than Doom Prevails. For my money, only Archenemy comes close, but why not combine the two and play Doom Prevails while also acting as the Archenemy, Schemes and all?

Even better, there are plenty of opportunities for you to upgrade it with the many other Villain cards from Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel's Spider-Man, and any other future Marvel releases. These decks are incredibly customizable and let you craft your own kind of fun for your next Commander night.

If you'd like to see all these cards and more, be sure to check out the Official Card Image Gallery or just head over to the Marvel Super Heroes page right here on CoolStuffInc. There you can see everything that the set has to offer, and you can also lock in your preorders for everything from singles to sealed products and even supplies.

There's just one more day of brand new previews left with the final Commander deck, Wakanda Forever, being unveiled by Tabletop Jocks. After that, we get to see all the cool variants and the Scene Box cards on Friday when the full and final Card Image Gallery hits the Wizards webpage.

After that, there's only one week until Prerelease with events kicking off on June 19th. Check with your local game store and see when they'll be offering events so you can get in on all of the fun at that time.
