Marvel Super Heroes Previews - Fantastic Four

Reddit

It's another day in preview season for the latest Magic: the Gathering release, Marvel Super Heroes.

Following last week's focus on the main set as well as the full Jumpstart reveal this weekend, the second week is all about the Commander decks. Yesterday showed us the Avengers Assemble precon and today we got to see another via the WeeklyMTG stream.

This time we're covering The Fantastic Four. While The Avengers have become some of the more popular characters in pop culture nowadays, The Fantastic Four remain one of the most iconic groups in Marvel's storied history. As such, it makes perfect sense to get a whole deck around them, either in a standard version or an all-surge foil Collector's variant.

This deck gives you the opportunity to play as any one of the main four characters at the helm of the deck. Each one has a different core color, but features all four of their colors to make the deck function. While not a part of the deck, you could also use the Jumpstart-exclusive card The Fantastic Four to represent them all if you so choose.

Check out the decklist below:

The Legends

Unlike the previous Commander deck revealed yesterday, this deck isn't quite so all-in on the Heroes in the new designs. That doesn't mean there aren't still plenty of them, though.

While most people know of The Fantastic Four, you might not know about their kids. Both Valeria and Franklin Richards are notable characters in the Fantastic Four family. Franklin Richards, Ascendant is especially noteworthy for the crazy things he can get up to even as a kid, which is well reflected in his card.

Alongside these mighty tykes are another batch of kiddos associated with the group, Power Pack. Not only are these a fun fan favorite inclusion, but they also serve as a rock-solid alternate option for your Commander should you find it more interesting than any of the primary options.

The Inhumans represent another group commonly associated with The Fantastic Four. Each of the main three characters of the bunch: Medusa, Black Bolt, and Crystal all appear here, alongside their lovable dog Lockjaw, Slobbering Teleporter.

Crystal, Inhuman Princess is perhaps the most noteworthy of the bunch, acting as an excellent font of mana while also dishing out plenty of damage along the way. Thanks to the way the mana ability is worded, you can even run her as your face Commander, and it wouldn't be an awful option to consider doing so.

Naturally, what Fantastic Four deck wouldn't be complete without Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer in it? When you play Silver Surfer, Galactus's Herald, you can search up a copy of Galactus, Devourer of Worlds and let people know the mighty foe is coming.

You may notice as well that Galactus isn't listed as a villain. That's because, as Blake Rasmussen and Daniel Holt noted in the stream, Galactus is more of a force of nature than an outright villain.

Several other characters show up too. Alicia Masters, Skilled Sculptor and Willie Lumpkin, Postman represent fun little nods to the lesser characters of the series. There's also Namor, Atlantean King here - a character known for alternating between roles as Hero and Villain who takes on neither role here and is simply a Noble instead.

New Spells

In addition to the many cool Legends in the deck, there are a number of other spells as well.

Naturally, for every character of the core Fantastic Four group, they have an ability that they're well known for. In some cases, they even have a beloved catchphrase to go with it. As a result, it makes perfect sense to give each character a sort of signature spell based on this aspect.

Not only are each of these quite powerful, offering a variety of strong effects, each also has the Rebound mechanic on it. This means that when you successfully cast the spell, you'll get another chance to cast it again the next turn for free. This is a great way to double the fun and maximize the value out of your Creatures.

Some of the other spells are no slouch either.

Ultimate Nullification was noted as representing one of the most powerful items in the entire Marvel series - something even Galactus feared. As such, it can wipe out everything with ease, provided you're willing to pay the cost to do so. Fittingly, it can also wipe out Galactus himself if you want a serious flavor win in your games.

Cosmic Crusade is yet another great way to ensure that you can hit all your colors of mana, even if it costs a lot to do so up front. This is great for this deck, but is sure to make it a fantastic inclusion in several other Multicolored decks for the rest of time. Similarly, Unstable Molecule Suit provides yet another Indestructible-granting Equipment, which are always considered to be evergreen abilities in a format like Commander.

The big card that has everyone talking, though, is The Fantasticar, and possibly not for the reasons you might be thinking of. Yes, it's silly and flavorfully fun, but it's also devastatingly powerful in older formats like Legacy and Vintage.

Both heavily feature 0 cost Artifacts and low (or no) cost mana ramp. Vintage in particular is known for its use of Mishra's Workshop, allowing you to cast this and then follow it up with Moxen. Even in Legacy, you have lines like Ancient Tomb, Lotus Petal, The Fantasticar, and two 0 cost Artifacts like Mishra's Bauble or Mox Opal to get you there.

If you're interested in this card, I'd pick it up sooner than later as it'll be quite the hot commodity soon enough.

Awesome Reprints

In addition to the many new cards in this deck, there are several fantastic reprints - including some serious surprises.

Some of the pricier reprints have become somewhat usual suspects. We've seen the likes of Clever Concealment and Three Visits show up somewhat regularly in Commander decks but they continue to be worthwhile additions. We've also seen Mind's Dilation a few times but here it gets a fresh coat of Marvel paint as The Watcher's Warning. There's even some lower demand cards here like Recurring Insight which gets its first reprint ever.

One of the cooler aspects to this deck, though, is the multitude of Universes Beyond reprints that made their way in. Both Quantum Misalignment and Into the Time Vortex are reprints from Doctor Who and Taunt from the Rampart is one from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. Each of these is an awesome, if welcome surprise to see here.

While this isn't necessarily printing new Universes Within versions, it does prove that these cards can and will be reprinted where possible. This is especially noteworthy in the case of Quantum Misalignment, which has become a rather expensive card. This gives players better access and hopefully eases up on the burden of needing a copy for their decks.

And, of course, we once again see all new arts for the likes of Arcane Signet, Sol Ring, and Command Tower. Each of these is an absolute staple of Commander and every single deck for Marvel Super Heroes boasts its own artwork themed after the deck that they come out of. As such, this deck contains copies of them based off of The Fantastic Four specifically.

Much like with Avengers Assemble, the Lands are also quite solid this time around. Another Battlebond-style Land makes an appearance with Rejuvenating Springs, as does more of the all-new Dual Lands like Sodden Verdure. The one thing the deck seems sorely in need of is more five-color options for Lands, but at least another sweet reprint of Fabled Passage helps a bit on that front.

Conclusion

The Fantastic Four Commander deck brings with it lots of awesome cards. True to its name, it's all-in on the core cast of characters and their associates, bringing a much more zeroed-in deck experience.

Compare this to Avengers Assemble, where there are a wide variety of fan favorite characters. Just about everyone is sure to have someone they love. Here, though, it's much more all-in for the Fantastic Four fans of the world specifically. If you are one of those fans, however, there is a ton to love in this deck.

Be sure to check out all these cards and more right here on the CoolStuffInc Marvel Super Heroes page. Both the Fantastic Four precon and all the cards are available, so lock them in now. Prerelease is just next week on June 19th, so be sure to check out your local game store for all the details on what events they'll be offering.

There's just two more days left of previews left with the remaining Commander decks coming tomorrow and Thursday, so be sure to check back for more coverage then.
