Getting Toxic in ONE Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. What do daffodils, rat poison, and certain relationships have in common? If you said they're all toxic, you're right. Toxicity is the common denominator in all of the decks I have for you this week. If you're a fan of alternate-win conditions, you'll want to check out these decks. Let's get started.

Dimir Toxic

We'll get started by taking a look at a Blue/Black deck that takes advantage of proliferating. Let's take a look at it.

Voidwing Hybrid
By attacking early with creatures like Voidwing Hybrid, who has flying, or Bilious Skulldweller, who has deathtouch, you'll be able to start giving your opponent poison counters. While it only takes ten poison counters to defeat your opponent, hitting that number gets more and more difficult as the game goes on, because creatures with toxic aren't usually the biggest of creatures, so your opponent will be able to block, and likely destroy, them before long.

However, with proliferate, all you need is to give your opponent a single poison counter and, given enough time, you can finish them off. Thrummingbird can help proliferate early on, but it will likely eventually become outclassed in the air. Blightbelly Rat is also on the small side of things, but you'll be able to proliferate when it dies. It also has toxic 1, making whether to block it or not a difficult choice for your opponent.

When you proliferate, you'll want to try to have Venser, Corpse Puppet on the battlefield. That will allow you to create a creature token called The Hollow Sentinel. The next time you proliferate, as long as you have that creature token still in play, you'll be able to give that token flying and lifelink until the end of the turn. Gaining an extra three points of life is sure to be helpful, keeping you in the race long enough to successfully finish your opponent off with poison counters.

Simic Toxic

Next, I have a Blue/Green deck for you that can poison your opponent simply by targeting your own creatures with spells. Let's check it out.

Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief
With a copy of Venerated Rotpriest on the battlefield, whenever you target a creature you control with a spell, your opponent will get a poison counter. Since this ability stacks, having multiple copies of Venerated Rotpriest in play will result in your opponent gaining additional poison counters. This ability also happens when your opponent targets your creatures, so targeted removal spells will still result in your opponent gaining some poison counters.

In order to take advantage of targeting your creatures with other spells, this deck runs a couple of creatures that give you something in return for being the target of a spell. When you target Stormchaser Drake with a spell, you'll draw a card, giving you extra options for future plays. Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief allows you to copy a spell that was cast and targets only a single creature, other than Ivy herself. That copy will then target Ivy, and since a copy of a spell is still a spell, will trigger Venerated Rotpriest resulting in a poison counter for your opponent.

This deck also utilizes the ability to be unblockable as a way to give additional poison counters to its opponent. By enchanting a creature with Security Bypass, you can allow that creature to be unblockable as long as the enchanted creature is attacking alone. Security Bypass also allows the enchanted creature to become bigger in size, thanks to connive. This makes it possible to win games in a traditional manner if poison isn't working for you.

Bant Toxic

The final deck I have for you only includes creatures with toxic, ensuring that your opponent can't let too many attacks through. Let's take a look at the deck.

Skrelv, Defector Mite
Skrelv, Defector Mite is a key component to this deck. With its ability that gives another creature hexproof to a specific color and enables that creature to be unblockable by creatures of that color, you'll be able to get some poison counters onto your opponent nearly all of the time. As I mentioned before the decklist, every creature in this deck has toxic, so giving your opponent poison counters shouldn't be a problem.

Similar to the Simic deck from before, this deck also includes a playset of Venerated Rotpriest. While there's only one spell that targets a creature you control, you can still get quite a bit of poison on your opponent by casting Aspirant's Ascent. This instant spell gives the targeted creature +1/+3, flying, and toxic 1. Since toxic stacks, that equates to an extra point of poison damage if the targeted creature deals combat damage to your opponent.

If death by poison doesn't seem to be in the cards for your opponent, you'll often be able to win in the traditional way as long as you have Slaughter Singer in play. With this Phyrexian Cleric on the battlefield, all of your creatures will get a +1/+1 bonus when they attack, since they all have toxic. There is a full playset of Slaughter Singer in this deck, so you can get up to a +4/+4 bonus potentially.

Wrapping Up

It should come as no surprise that I love alternate ways to win, so toxic is right up my alley. Even though toxic isn't in my favorite color to play, Red, I'm still very excited to try these decks out on Magic Arena.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
