Hello everyone. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is almost here, but there's still a little time for me to continue my series of articles where I look at decks that all feature a specific color of mana. With just two weeks until our next release, I've made it to the color Green, so let's get started.
Mono-Green Stompy
Since all of the decks this week feature Green mana, we'll begin by looking at a Mono-Green deck. Before I discuss specific cards within the deck, let's take a look at the deck list.
Mono-Green Stompy | DFT Standard | MtgMalone, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (25)
- 2 Haywire Mite
- 2 Regal Imperiosaur
- 3 Agonasaur Rex
- 3 District Mascot
- 3 Tranquil Frillback
- 4 Llanowar Elves
- 4 Outcaster Trailblazer
- 4 Webstrike Elite
- Planeswalkers (2)
- 2 Nissa, Ascended Animist
- Sorceries (4)
- 4 Hard-Hitting Question
- Artifacts (5)
- 2 Thunderous Velocipede
- 3 Lumbering Worldwagon
- Lands (24)
- 21 Forest
- 1 Fountainport
- 2 Demolition Field
Webstrike Elite is a great play in the early game against aggressive decks. Since this Insect Archer is a 3/3, it will be able to block most early creatures. It also has reach, offering you some protection against flying creatures. If you're not against an aggro deck, you might consider holding this card so you can cycle it. Doing this allows you to destroy any artifact or enchantment your opponent might have that's troublesome for you.
Another great card to play early on is District Mascot. While this Dog Mount starts off small, if you're able to saddle it and attack each turn, you can quickly gain enough +1/+1 counters to be a major threat. District Mascot also has an activated ability you can use against opponents that rely on artifacts for help. Using this ability does require you to remove two +1/+1 counters from District Mascot, so you'll want to make sure the artifact you destroy is worth it.
Selesnya Auras
The next deck I have for you might have trouble competing with the Mono-Green deck we just looked at, because it thrives by playing lots of enchantments. Let's take a look at the deck.

- Creatures (20)
- 4 Calix, Guided by Fate
- 4 Dusk Legion Duelist
- 4 Optimistic Scavenger
- 4 Toadstool Admirer
- 4 Tomakul Honor Guard
- Instants (2)
- 2 Royal Treatment
- Enchantments (18)
- 3 Innkeeper's Talent
- 3 Unflinching Courage
- 4 Shardmage's Rescue
- 4 Sheltered by Ghosts
- 4 Sylvan Scavenging
- Lands (20)
- 4 Forest
- 4 Plains
- 4 Hushwood Verge
- 4 Brushland
- 4 Razorverge Thicket
Optimistic Scavenger is a terrific first play for this deck. While this Human Scout is on the battlefield, whenever an enchantment enters play under your control, you'll be able to put a +1/+1 counter on a target creature. By giving this +1/+1 counter to a creature you have that is already enchanted with Unflinching Courage, you'll create a big beater that has both trample and lifelink.
Having a large creature in play gives you some options if you have Sylvan Scavenging in play. While this enchantment is in play, at the beginning of your end step you can either choose to put a +1/+1 counter on one of your creatures, or, assuming you have a creature with power 4 or more, you can create a 3/3 Raccoon creature token. Bigger or wider? Which option will you choose?
Simic Turtles
Next, we'll go under the sea and take a look at a deck that features some tough Turtles. Let's take a look at the deck.
Simic Turtles | DFT Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (32)
- 2 Pit Automaton
- 2 Shield-Wall Sentinel
- 4 Aegis Turtle
- 4 Armored Scrapgorger
- 4 Bedrock Tortoise
- 4 Caelorna, Coral Tyrant
- 4 Overgrown Zealot
- 4 The Pride of Hull Clade
- 4 Walking Bulwark
- Instants (4)
- 2 Into the Flood Maw
- 2 Spell Pierce
- Enchantments (3)
- 3 Gossip's Talent
- Lands (21)
- 2 Forest
- 5 Island
- 2 Cavern of Souls
- 4 Botanical Sanctum
- 4 Willowrush Verge
- 4 Yavimaya Coast
While I mentioned that there were some great Turtles in this deck, the true theme of the deck is high toughness creatures. Every creature in this deck has at least 3 points of toughness, while a few have considerably more. And all of them have a higher toughness than power. This makes having a copy of Bedrock Tortoise in play very important, because this will allow you to deal combat damage based on toughness rather than power.
These high toughness creatures also help you power out The Pride of Hull Clade very quickly. If you're able to reduce the casting cost of this Crocodile Elk Turtle by 10 mana, you'll have a 2/15 creature in play for just a single Green mana. The Pride of Hull Clade also has an activated ability that can allow any defender to attack, and if that creature deals combat damage to a player, you'll draw cards equal to that creature's toughness. Drawing anywhere from 3-15 cards plus dealing that amount of damage feels pretty good.
Golgari Landfall
The next deck I have for you features a landfall theme alongside a bunch of Hydras with +1/+1 counters. Let's check it out.
Golgari Landfall | DFT Standard | JayVillain, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (19)
- 3 Bristly Bill, Spine Sower
- 4 Bloodghast
- 4 Goldvein Hydra
- 4 Iridescent Vinelasher
- 4 Mossborn Hydra
- Instants (8)
- 4 Bitter Triumph
- 4 Stab
- Sorceries (4)
- 4 Bushwhack
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Ordeal of Nylea
- Artifacts (5)
- 2 Lumbering Worldwagon
- 3 Thunderous Velocipede
- Lands (21)
- 6 Swamp
- 7 Forest
- 4 Blooming Marsh
- 4 Wastewood Verge
- Sideboard (7)
- 1 Insidious Fungus
- 1 Assassin's Trophy
- 1 Defend the Rider
- 1 Long Goodbye
- 1 Withering Torment
- 2 Overprotect
Mossborn Hydra enters play with a single +1/+1 counter on it. It does have a landfall ability, doubling the number of +1/+1 counters on it whenever you play a land. This allows Mossborn Hydra to grow to some pretty impressive proportions as the game goes on. Plus, Mossborn Hydra has trample, making it difficult for your opponent to block all of the oncoming damage without losing multiple creatures in the process.
A great ally for Mossborn Hydra is Bristly Bill, Spine Sower. Bristly Bill also has a landfall ability that will put a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control when you have a land enter play. By stacking the landfall triggers, you can play a land, then have Bristly Bill put a +1/+1 counter on Mossborn Hydra. After that, double the number of +1/+1 counters on Mossborn Hydra with its own landfall ability. Fun!
Gruul Ooze World Order
The final deck I have for you uses an enchantment to turn all of your creatures into big Oozes. Let's take a look at the deck.
Gruul Ooze World Order | DFT Standard | JayVillain, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (14)
- 2 Armored Scrapgorger
- 4 Enduring Courage

- Sideboard (7)
- 2 Insidious Fungus
- 1 Skycrash
- 1 Trash the Town
- 1 Atraxa's Fall
- 1 Brotherhood's End
- 1 Garruk's Uprising
Your first objective with this deck is to get a lot of creatures into play. You can do this fairly easily by creating creature tokens with spells like Song of Totentanz and Awaken the Woods. If you also happen to have a copy of Thunderous Velocipede on the battlefield, any creatures that enter the battlefield will gain an additional 1-3 +1/+1 counters, making them more of a threat.
Once you've built up a few creatures, you can play March of the World Ooze. This enchantment will cause all of your creatures to have base power and toughness of 6/6. If your opponent casts any spells on your turn, you'll also create a 3/3 Elephant creature token, which will immediately become buffed by March of the World Ooze and become a 6/6. You can use all of your new Ooze creatures to quickly reduce your opponent's life total to 0.
Wrapping Up
Green is usually the color of big creatures. These decks show that raw power like Green provides should not be underestimated. Any of these decks has the tools you need to drop your opponent's life from 20 to 0 very quickly.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
