The Kenrith Twins Hit Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. My goal every week is to bring you some new, exciting decks that you can use against your friends or at your local Friday Night Magic tournament. Some weeks I find myself writing about decks that I've seen being played online by YouTube creators or Twitch streamers. Other weeks, I look to tournament winning decklists for inspiration. This week, though, is a week where it's personal for me. On Magic Arena, I recently played against a deck that used the flip side of Rowan, Scholar of Sparks, Will, Scholar of Frost, to shut my deck down. Even though I ended up losing that game, playing against that made me want to look up other decks featuring these twin planeswalkers to try out. So, this week, we'll be looking at decks featuring the Kenrith twins. Let's get started.

Rowan, Scholar of Sparks // Will, Scholar of Frost

Prismari Burn

The first deck I have for you features a combination of card drawing and direct damage. Let's take a look at the deck.

Sprite Dragon
The main goals of this deck are to draw cards and deal direct damage to your opponent and their creatures. Shock and Opt are both cards that cost a single mana that you can use to accomplish these goals. There are additional spells that you can also use to directly destroy an opponent's creatures, or to take down their life total a bit. Fire Prophecy can deal three damage to any target. It also allows you to draw a card, ensuring that you've got additional destruction in your hand. Thundering Rebuke deals slightly more damage, but can only be used against creatures or planeswalkers. It can help you clear a path for your attacking creatures.

Speaking of your creatures, the ones in this deck are pretty great at becoming threats that must be blocked. Both Faerie Vandal and Sprite Dragon start off small, but can grow to game ending threats in a couple of turns. They also both have flying, making them difficult for some decks to block. Lore Drakkis should always be mutated onto a creature you control, and it allows you another chance of casting an instant or sorcery from your graveyard. As a finisher, Efreet Flamepainter can do it all. With its double strike, if Efreet Flamepainter is unblocked, it will deal combat damage twice when it attacks. That enables you to cast two spells for free from your graveyard, which can help you close out a game.

Rowan and Will are represented in two different forms in this deck. Rowan, Scholar of Sparks and her brother Will, Scholar of Frost are great additions to this deck, as their static ability makes your instant and sorcery spells cost one less mana to cast. That can be a huge help when casting spells for free with Efreet Flamepainter. The Royal Scions can be a little more useful than the twins will be individually, since they have a +1 loyalty ability that gives one of your creatures a +2/+0 bonus plus first strike and trample for the turn. That can be exactly what is needed against an opponent that is able to chump block all day long.

Izzet Superfriends

For the next deck, I have a special treat featuring six different planeswalkers. Let's check it out.

Jace, Mirror Mage
This is a control deck that wants to draw a lot of cards. It does so with a variety of planeswalker abilities. Jace, Mirror Mage has a 0 loyalty ability that allows you to draw a card that removed loyalty counters from Jace equal to that cards mana value. The Royal Scions has a +1 loyalty ability that allows you to draw a card and then discard a card. Teferi, Master of Time has the same loyalty ability that The Royal Scions has. Will, Scholar of Frost has a -3 loyalty ability that has you draw two cards. By using all of these abilities, you'll be able to draw multiple cards each turn, allowing you to deal extra damage with the +1 loyalty ability of Rowan, Scholar of Sparks.

Those extra cards you're able to draw will help you put an end to your opponent with the help of Irencrag Pyromancer. This Human Wizard will deal three damage to any target whenever you draw your second card each turn. Plus, since Irencrag Pyromancer has a 4 toughness, she is perfectly designed to stop small attacking creatures in their tracks.

One other benefit of drawing extra cards, besides having more options available to cast, is that you'll be able to create 8/8 Kraken creature tokens very quickly when you have a copy of Ominous Seas on the battlefield. With this enchantment in play, you'll put a foreshadow counter on it whenever you draw a card, including at the beginning of your turn. At any point that you have priority, you can choose to remove eight foreshadow counters from it in order to create an 8/8 Kraken creature token. These tokens can help you finish off your opponent quickly or they can be held in defense while you burn away your opponent's last few life points.

Jeskai History

The final deck I have for you this week utilizes Reconstruct History for maximum card advantage. Let's take a look at it.

Reconstruct History
This is another control deck that you can try out. It looks to harness the power of Reconstruct History to play things multiple times, which enables you to run fewer copies of your spells and allows you greater versatility. Reconstruct History allows you to return an artifact, and enchantment, an instant, a sorcery, and a planeswalker card from your graveyard to your hand. This deck is built to take advantage of these card types, so you'll usually be able to return at least four of the five card types when you play it.

The artifact you'll want to return is Solemn Simulacrum. This will help you ramp up your mana, enabling you to win the game with some big-mana plays. There are a couple of enchantments that can be returned. Most likely, you'll want to choose Shark Typhoon, since early in the game you'll probably have cycled this card to create a Shark creature token. By returning it to your hand, you can either choose to cycle it again, creating a larger Shark token, or cast it outright to be able to create multiple Sharks. Your decision of which instant and sorcery to return to your hand will be much more dependent on your situation, and there generally won't be any specific card you'll choose the majority of the time.

In order to win with this deck, you'll generally use Shark Typhoon to create a large Shark token that you can attack with, or an army of smaller tokens to do the same. Alternatively, you can use Kiora Bests the Sea God to create an 8/8 Kraken creature token with hexproof. Then, you can use Alrund's Epiphany as a means of taking an extra turn, allowing you to get an additional lore counter on Kiora Bests the Sea God, getting you to the third chapter one turn quicker than normal. When this happens, you can take control of your opponent's biggest threat and use it against them in your attempt to win the game.

Wrapping Up

The Kenrith twins are formidable planeswalkers in all of their forms. Their abilities are sure to help you find victory against any opponent.
