It's time at last! A new Magic: The Gathering expansion is upon us, this time featuring the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (or TMNT for short)!

The Heroes in a Half Shell are joining Magic in spectacular fashion in just a few weeks, meaning it's time for a good ol' preview season! Things kicked off earlier today with a debut stream on Twitch and YouTube. This then continued in a WeeklyMTG reveal stream on Twitch showing off several other cards not revealed during the debut.
You might be wondering what exactly was left to preview during today's debut stream following the issues with the Lorwyn Eclipsed prerelease kits. A production issue caused several kits to include TMNT rares and mythics, revealing just about all of them in the process! Wizards acknowledged this and revealed them all officially... but stopped short of showing off any of their cool variant versions.
Let's have a look at some of the new cards revealed over the course of the streams!
New Cards First
Naturally, things have to start with the focus on the Turtles themselves! A whole number of cards were shown off to highlight this fact. Each Turtle was revealed to have a different card at each rarity, with Raphael, Tough Turtle highlighting this by showing his common card along with the others we already knew. Additionally, Mutant Chain Reaction and Cowabunga! perfectly encapsulate how their teaming up works together throughout the series.
The Last Ronin's Technique highlights this further, showing how even in death, the Turtles remain with one another in spirit. This card looks to be an excellent way to swarm the board - especially if you can Sneak it in.
Shredder got a few new cards as well! Shredder's Revenge isn't just a cool nod to the video game of the same name, but is a cool take on combining Mind Rot with Painful Lesson onto a single card. Shredder's Technique provides some powerful new removal, giving you another one-mana kill spell provided you can utilize its Sneak cost.
Several classic characters make an appearance as well. I know that the Punk Frogs are fan favorites, and they seem to make an appearance as seen with Genghis Frog. Additionally, the Action News Crew having the "Channel - 6" ability is a fun nod to the news crew being a part of the Channel 6 News team. Karai is another fan favorite who works alongside Shredder as his second in command, showing they're not afraid to bring in all the beloved characters with this set.
And what would a TMNT set be without pizza! The classic food is beloved by the Turtles, who notoriously are always putting weird and unusual toppings on their pizzas. Naturally, someone has to deliver all that pizza, which we get with the new Courier of Comestibles card!
Eternal Legal Goodness
The next element that was focused on were the various Eternal Legal cards! These are the cards that traditionally include the Commander cards, but also include the cards included in other products as well.
As previously noted, the Commander decks pay homage to the classic video games of years past. As someone who grew up frequently hanging around TMNT arcade cabinets, I especially love the nods to these classic titles throughout. They're not the only ones represented, though. Just about anyone who ever played the original TMNT game for the Nintendo Entertainment System as a kid knows the horrors of the dam level and the electric seaweed within. It drains lives like nobody's business and is a great callback here.
The full deck will be revealed Wednesday via the Command Zone, so be sure to check that out when it goes live!
A handful of additional cards were shown off from the Turtle Team-Up product as well, though not enough to truly highlight what the product entails. Still, it's hard to not get a good laugh out of Definitely Not a Turtle - especially if you're familiar with the source material.
Finally, we also got the rest of the promos from the Pizza Bundle. Many of these are cool and iconic reprints with some arts referencing their in-universe originals or otherwise offering a clever pun, such as Supreme Verdict. Amusingly, you get things like Sword of Hearth and Home represented with a pizza cutter or Commander's Plate showing Leonardo decked out in pizza and pizza-related garb. It's a silly and clever way to play up a theme that is iconic for the franchise.
Cool New Variants
The big highlight of the stream was the various special versions. Since we already have seen most of the cards revealed, getting to see them all in sweet new treatments gives us an extra look at the awesome things the team is getting up to with this set.
The big ones are naturally the headliner cards. All four of the mythic rare turtles from the main set have a special collector booster-exclusive version featuring art and signatures from TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman. Each one has a slightly different signature and doodle on them, giving them a bit of additional specialness in the process.
Next up are the main showcase frame treatments for the set: the Sewer Frame cards. These offer a border reminiscent of the look of the sewers iconic to the TMNT franchise while showing off the classic mutagen ooze. The artwork on these cards boasts a look that largely seems to play off the style of the classic cartoon series from the 80's and 90's.
Several mythic rares also receive a special borderless treatment, depicting a variety of characters in the form of a silhouette. There are eight of these in all - that have been revealed, at least. Each one can be found in all booster types, though there are a set of special surge foil variants exclusive to collector boosters.
Speaking of cool collector booster exclusives, the Japan Showcase cards return once more. This time around, the artists were granted far more freedom to provide their own unique styles to the cards. As a result, they boast a wide variety of appearances and depictions for the characters, from serious to stylish to even a bit of chibi silliness. These can be found in their normal foil versions or in their fracture foil forms - again, only in collector boosters.
Another common element of Universes Beyond sets are the scene arts. These return for TMNT with a handful of cards appearing with artwork that forms a giant piece when you put them all together.
Finally, as the Commander deck showcases the video games based on the TMNT series, it only makes sense to give some cards the classic pixel art treatment as well. Several cards from the precon get this cool pixel art look, with more to be revealed alongside the rest of the list on Wednesday.
Source Material Cards
As with most Universes Beyond releases nowadays, we're getting an additional bonus sheet featuring source material artworks. We previously saw a version of Doubling Season featuring artwork from the very first TMNT comic book, but today we got to see all of the others!
Each of the remaining twenty cards were revealed, with each one using a different artwork from one of the many TMNT comics. Classic game aficionados may also recognize the Teleportation Circle art as the cover art used for the original NES video game. These twenty cards will appear in low quantities in play boosters and will see more frequent appearances in collector boosters.
