Hello everyone. The release of Marvel's Spiderman is nearly upon us, so it's time for me to wrap up my series of articles where I look at decks that all feature a specific color. For my final articles of this series for the Edge of Eternities Standard season, I'll be looking at decks featuring my favorite color of mana, Red. Let's get started.
Mostly Mono-Red Dragons
As usual, I like to start things off with a mono-colored deck, however this deck is almost mono-colored. While it might not be completely Mono-Red, it does feature one of the most popular creature types in Magic, Dragons. Let's take a look at the deck.
Mostly Mono-Red Dragons | EOE Standard | Redd_Cat_MTG, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (25)
- 2 Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest
- 3 Magda, the Hoardmaster
- 4 Decadent Dragon
- 4 Magmatic Hellkite
- 4 Nova Hellkite
- 4 Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant
- 4 Twinmaw Stormbrood
- Sorceries (6)
- 1 Hell to Pay
- 2 Seize the Spoils
- 3 Molten Exhale
- Artifacts (4)
- 1 Agatha's Soul Cauldron
- 1 The Fire Crystal
- 2 Carnelian Orb of Dragonkind
- Lands (25)
- 20 Mountain
- 1 Abraded Bluffs
- 2 Cavern of Souls
- 2 Maelstrom of the Spirit Dragon
Nova Hellkite is the latest addition to the Dragon clan from Edge of Eternities. When it enters play, you will deal 1 damage to a creature your opponent controls. Since Nova Hellkite can be warped in, you'll have the ability to do this a couple of times, giving you some fair removal. You can continue dealing damage like this by creating copies of Nova Hellkite with The Fire Crystal.
In addition to this damage, there are a few additional spells in this deck that help you deal with your opponent's creatures. Charring Bite, the omen portion of Twinmaw Stormbrood deals 5 damage to a creature that doesn't have flying. Molten Exhale can deal 4 damage to an opposing creature (or planeswalker). There's also a copy of one of my favorite removal spells, Hell to Pay, which can be used to destroy an opposing creature of any size, provided that you have enough mana to cast it with.
Boros Toys
The next deck I have for you is perfect to play for the start of Halloween season. Let's take a look at the deck.
Boros Toys | EOE Standard | SuperBeastGN, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (21)
- 2 Roaming Throne
- 3 Living Phone
- 4 Arabella, Abandoned Doll
- 4 Clockwork Percussionist
- 4 Ragged Playmate
- 4 Splitskin Doll
- Instants (10)
- 3 Get Lost
- 3 Lightning Strike
- 4 Lightning Helix
- Sorceries (3)
- 3 Expel the Interlopers
- Enchantments (4)
- 2 Authority of the Consuls
- 2 Seam Rip
- Lands (22)
- 6 Mountain
- 6 Plains
- 2 Cavern of Souls
- 2 Sacred Foundry
- 2 Sunbillow Verge
- 4 Inspiring Vantage
With Halloween rapidly approaching, I might have to try this deck out soon. Arabella, Abandoned Doll is a terrifying leader for this deck. By herself, Arabella isn't that threatening. She's just a 1/3 creature, after all. However, her ability that drains life from your opponent giving you a health boost based around the number of creatures you control with power 2 or less is what makes her so good.
Every creature in this deck naturally has power 2 or less except for Roaming Throne, which is included for its ability to double Arabella's attack trigger. To maximize the effectiveness of this trigger, you can utilize the activated ability of Ragged Playmate to make Arabella unblockable, ensuring that she won't be blocked and killed by bigger forces.
Izzet Artifacts
Next, I have an Izzet deck that you can play in the event that Vivi Ornitier ends up getting banned. Let's take a look at the deck.
Izzet Artifacts | EOE Standard | PhantasmsPlayground, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (17)
- 1 Malcolm, the Eyes
- 2 Mm'menon, Uthros Exile
- 2 Pinnacle Emissary
- 4 Gingerbrute
- 4 Gleaming Geardrake
- 4 Kavaron Harrier
- Instants (4)
- 4 Into the Flood Maw
- Sorceries (4)
- 4 Plasma Bolt
- Enchantments (8)
- 4 Case of the Filched Falcon
- 4 Zoetic Glyph
- Artifacts (5)
- 1 Saw
- 2 Chainsaw
- 2 Diamond Pick-Axe
- Lands (22)
- 9 Island
- 10 Mountain
- 1 Scene of the Crime
- 2 Eroded Canyon
As I mentioned before the deck list, this is an Izzet deck without Vivi Ornitier, but it's also a budget-friendly deck. While there are some rare cards in the deck, one of the most important cards is an uncommon. That card is Mm'menon, Uthros Exile. While Mm'menon is on the battlefield, whenever you have an artifact come into play, you'll be able to place a +1/+1 counter on any creature. Use these boosts to overpower your opponent's defenses.
You can also gain a number of +1/+1 counters on Gleaming Geardrake. It has an ability that places a +1/+1 counter on itself whenever you sacrifice an artifact. While you have the option to sacrifice Gingerbrute to gain some extra life, a better partner for Gleaming Geardrake is Kavaron Harrier. Whenever Kavaron Harrier attacks, you can pay two mana to create an attacking 2/2 Robot artifact creature token that will be sacrificed at the end of combat.
Rakdos Lizards
If you're looking for a deck with a lot of synergy, look no further. Let's check out this Rakdos Lizards deck.
Rakdos Lizards | EOE Standard | ACCILLESS, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (29)
- 2 Laughing Jasper Flint
- 3 Viashino Pyromancer
- 4 Fireglass Mentor
- 4 Flamecache Gecko
- 4 Gastal Thrillseeker
- 4 Gev, Scaled Scorch
- 4 Hired Claw
- 4 Iridescent Vinelasher
- Instants (8)
- 2 Burst Lightning
- 2 Scales of Shale
- 4 Shoot the Sheriff
- Lands (23)
- 3 Swamp
- 4 Mountain
- 4 Blazemire Verge
- 4 Fabled Passage
- 4 Jagged Barrens
- 4 Starting Town
Gev, Scaled Scorch is the most important creature in this deck. His ability that deals 1 damage to your opponent whenever you cast a Lizard spell means that you'll want to get Gev into play as quickly as possible. Every creature in this deck is a Lizard, so you'll be able to deal a lot of incidental damage simply by building up your board. Gev's other ability gives each creature an additional +1/+1 counter when they enter play as long as your opponent has lost life this turn. This ensures that all of your creatures are just a bit bigger than usual.
Since you're likely to have a lot of Lizards in play, you can deal a little more incidental damage by attacking while you have a copy of Hired Claw on the battlefield. By having multiple copies of this Lizard mercenary in play, you'll deal extra damage. Hired Claw also has an activated ability that gives it +1/+1 counters, so if you have leftover mana at the end of your turn, it doesn't have to go to waste. Build up your Hired Claw into a massive defender.
GruulRoboroid
The final deck I have for you this week also focuses on gaining +1/+1 counters. Let's take a look at the deck.
GruulRoboroid | EOE Standard | MTGABrewLab, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (23)
- 3 Emberheart Challenger
- 4 Hired Claw
- 4 Ouroboroid
- 4 Pawpatch Recruit
- 4 Screaming Nemesis
- 4 Slickshot Show-Off
- Instants (10)
- 3 Lightning Strike
- 3 Witchstalker Frenzy
- 4 Burst Lightning
- Enchantments (4)
- 1 Terrasymbiosis
- 3 Innkeeper's Talent
- Lands (23)
- 4 Forest
- 7 Mountain
- 4 Starting Town
- 4 Stomping Ground
- 4 Thornspire Verge
The ability for Ouroboroid to put +1/+1 counters on each creature you control based on the current power of Ouroboroid can quickly get out of hand. Build up your team and keep attacking, hoping that Screaming Nemesis either gets blocked so it can make it so that your opponent cannot gain life for the remainder of the game, or deal a ton of damage to your opponent. Neither option is great for your opponent, which is exactly how you want it.
You can gain additional +1/+1 counters for your team while you have Pawpatch Recruit in play. If your opponent targets one of your creatures with a spell or ability, Pawpatch Recruit allows you to place a +1/+1 counter on one of your other creatures. Targeted removal suddenly becomes less effective when destroying one threat makes another one even stronger. These +1/+1 counters become especially problematic when given to Slickshot Show-Off, who has flying, or to Pawpatch Recruit, who has trample.
Wrapping Up
We've reached the end of Edge of Eternities Standard and are about to embark upon a new era where super-powered spider people suddenly spring into action. You can use the decks I've shown you the past few weeks in the early stages of Marvel's Spider-Man Standard while new strategies are developed.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
