Hello everyone. The release of Magic's latest set, Avatar: The Last Airbender, is upon us, which means it's time for me to wrap up my series where I provide you decks that you can play that are all focused around a specific color. Due to the recent bannings, I pushed off Red decks until this week, so without further ado, let's get started.
Mono-Red TezzeRed
Starting things off is a Mono-Red deck that focuses on Tezzeret and his love of artifacts. Let's take a look at the deck.
Mono-Red TezzeRed | SPM Standard | TezzeRed, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (5)
- 1 Rust Harvester
- 4 Kavaron Harrier
- Planeswalkers (6)
- 3 Chandra, Spark Hunter
- 3 Tezzeret, Cruel Captain
- Instants (7)
- 3 Invasive Maneuvers
- 4 Torch the Tower
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Weapons Manufacturing
- Artifacts (14)
- 1 Gastal Thrillroller
- 2 Ghost Vacuum
- 3 Warmaker Gunship
- 4 Legion Extruder
- 4 Nutrient Block
- Lands (24)
- 20 Mountain
- 2 Fomori Vault
- 2 The Gold Saucer
Tezzeret, Cruel Captain starts off with 4 loyalty counters, and all of his loyalty abilities reduce that number. Luckily, Tezzeret has a static ability that puts a loyalty counter on him whenever an artifact you control enters play. If you manage to get both Tezzeret and Chandra, Spark Hunter in play at the same time, you'll be sitting pretty, as Chandra has a 0 loyalty ability that creates a 3/2 Vehicle artifact token. The goal is to be able to activate both planeswalkers' -7 loyalty ultimate abilities.
Weapons Manufacturing plays a huge role in this deck, creating a Munitions artifact token that deals 2 damage to any target whenever it leaves the battlefield whenever a nontoken artifact you control enters the battlefield. Chandra has a -2 loyalty ability that allows you to sacrifice an artifact to draw a card. You can also sacrifice artifacts with Legion Extruder, which creates a 3/3 Golem artifact creature token when you do.
Boros Goblins
If artifacts aren't to your liking, maybe Goblins will do the trick. Let's check out this Boros Goblins deck.

- Creatures (18)
- 3 Howlsquad Heavy
- 3 Krenko, Mob Boss
- 4 Burnout Bashtronaut
- 4 Searslicer Goblin
- 4 Stadium Headliner
- Instants (11)
- 2 Coordinated Maneuver
- 2 Dreadmaw's Ire
- 3 Frontline Rush
- 4 Burst Lightning
- Sorceries (2)
- 2 Collision Course
- Enchantments (9)
- 2 Impact Tremors
- 3 Warleader's Call
- 4 Sheltered by Ghosts
- Lands (20)
- 4 Plains
- 6 Mountain
- 2 Cavern of Souls
- 2 Multiversal Passage
- 2 Sunbillow Verge
- 4 Inspiring Vantage
Howlsquad Heavy and Searslicer Goblin work well while they're on the battlefield together. Howlsquad Heavy gives all your other Goblins haste, plus it creates a 1/1 Goblin creature token at the beginning of your turn. This token has to attack, if able, which fits in perfectly with Searslicer Goblin who creates a 1/1 Goblin creature token at the beginning of your end step as long as you attacked with 1 or more Goblins this turn.
By combining this pair with Impact Tremors and Warleader's Call, you can deal quite a bit of damage directly to your opponent, even if your Goblins get blocked and destroyed. If you manage to get a copy of Krenko, Mob Boss into play, you might be able to defeat your opponent simply by the damage created by this pair of powerful enchantments.
Izzet Prowess
Next, let's take a look at an Izzet deck now that Vivi Ornitier has been banned.
Izzet Prowess | SPM Standard | Brentx97, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (13)
- 2 Quantum Riddler
- 3 Drake Hatcher
- 4 Emberheart Challenger
- 4 Slickshot Show-Off
- Instants (12)
- 4 Into the Flood Maw
- 4 Opt
- 4 Torch the Tower
- Sorceries (8)
- 4 Sleight of Hand
- 4 Stock Up
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Stormchaser's Talent
This deck utilizes creatures that have prowess or a pseudo-form of prowess to temporarily boost their stats and attack for large amounts of damage. If your opponent doesn't block Drake Hatcher, you can get a lot of incubation counters on it. By removing 3 of those counters, you can create a 2/2 Drake creature token with flying that can help you fly in for the win in the later portion of the match.
Even though there are a number of spells that you can cast to help you draw additional cards, there is a pair of Quantum Riddler in this deck that can help you draw extra cards when your hand gets low. It also happens to be a nice, big attacker that has flying, so it can also help you finish off your opponent quickly.
Rakdos Control
Next, I have a Rakdos deck that can really punish your opponent. Let's check it out.
Rakdos Control | SPM Standard | Capricorn, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (20)
- 4 Bloodletter of Aclazotz
- 4 Deep-Cavern Bat
- 4 Harvester of Misery
- 4 Overlord of the Balemurk
- 4 Trumpeting Carnosaur
- Sorceries (4)
- 4 Push // Pull
- Enchantments (12)
- 4 Parker Luck
- 4 Unholy Annex // Ritual Chamber
- 4 Virtue of Persistence
- Artifacts (1)
- 1 The Soul Stone
- Lands (23)
- 1 Mountain
- 8 Swamp
- 1 Restless Vents
- 1 Soulstone Sanctuary
- 4 Blazemire Verge
- 4 Multiversal Passage
- 4 Raucous Theater
By building around Parker Luck, you are able to deal a lot of direct damage to your opponent's life total. While this enchantment is in play, at the beginning of your end step, each player reveals the top card of their deck, which will go into their hand. Each player will lose an amount of life equal to the mana value of the card their opponent revealed. By including cards that have a high mana value in this deck, you'll likely be able to deal more damage to your opponent than they deal back to you.
One such card that has a high mana value is the only pure Red card in this deck, Trumpeting Carnosaur (since the Pull half of Push // Pull can be cast with only Black mana). Having a six mana value means that your opponent will lose almost 1/3 of their starting life total, plus once you have enough mana to cast it, they're likely to lose even more since it's a 7/6 creature with trample.
Gruul Midrange
The final deck I have for you is a Gruul deck that might just surprise your opponent. Let's take a look at the deck.
Gruul Midrange | SPM Standard | MTGA-Assistant-Meta, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (28)
- 3 Calamity, Galloping Inferno
- 3 Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant
- 3 Overlord of the Hauntwoods
- 3 Terror of the Peaks
- 4 Kona, Rescue Beastie
- 4 Llanowar Elves
- 4 Trumpeting Carnosaur
- 4 Vaultborn Tyrant
- Instants (4)
- 4 Smuggler's Surprise
- Artifacts (4)
- 4 Lumbering Worldwagon
- Lands (24)
- 5 Mountain
- 7 Forest
- 3 Evendo, Waking Haven
- 3 Kavaron, Memorial World
- 3 Stomping Ground
- 3 Thornspire Verge
This deck is filled with a lot of big creatures that cost a lot of mana to play. However, even though you have some mana acceleration in the form of Llanowar Elves and Lumbering Worldwagon, you're most likely to get these creatures into play by casting Smuggler's Surprise. Drop a Terror of the Peaks with nearly anything else, and your opponent will be in for a world of trouble.
You can also put additional creatures into play without paying for them in a couple of different ways. First is by having Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant enter play. Whether cast or cheated into play, when Ghalta comes in, you can put any number of other creature cards from your hand into play. You can also put a creature from your hand into play at the beginning of your second main phase if you're able to get Kona, Rescue Beastie tapped. The easiest way to do this is by having Kona crew a vehicle you control.
Wrapping Up
This marks the end of our look at decks from the Marvel's Spider-Man era of Standard that feature a specific color. In the early stages of our new Standard format, you might want to use any of the decks from the past 5 weeks while you build up your collection and build new decks that utilize cards from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
