Three Early Decks for Avatar Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. The moment has finally arrived when we can begin building decks with the new Avatar: The Last Airbender set. This set has a lot of cool new bending mechanics, and the decks I have for you this week all tap into those mechanics. Let's get started.

Mono-Red Firebending Aggro Prowess

As a Mono-Red player, there's nothing I love more than an aggressive deck. The first deck I have for you this week is Mono-Red that uses Firebending to gain an advantage over its opponent. Let's take a look at the deck.

Fire Nation Cadets
Redirect Lightning
Firebending Student

Firebending leans heavily in an aggressive direction by providing you with additional mana you can use during your combat phase. Fire Nation Cadets is the perfect example of this. As long as you have a Lesson in your graveyard, Fire Nation Cadets has Firebending 2, which provides you with two Red mana whenever Fire Nation Cadets attacks. You can use that mana for anything you'd like, from casting Instant spells to activating abilities of cards you currently have in play.

One great Instant you can use that Firebending mana on is Redirect Lightning. This spell offers Red decks the ability to change the target of a spell or ability that has a single target. As long as you have open mana and this card in hand, you never have to worry about your big attacker being destroyed by a targeted removal spell. Redirect that spell towards your opponent's best creature and watch them squirm in their seat.

Firebending Student is one of the best creatures in this deck, having both Firebending X and prowess. You'll usually want to use your available mana prior to combat while you have a copy of Firebending Student ready to attack. Cast as many noncreature spells as you can before attacking, to boost Firebending Student's power as high as possible. Then attack, using the Firebending mana to cast even more noncreature spells, further boosting its power.

Azorius Momo Flying

The next deck I have for you features Momo, Aang's little winged lemur companion. It also includes cards with both Waterbending and Airbending. Let's take a look at the deck.

Momo, Friendly Flier
Air Nomad Legacy
Aang, Swift Savior // Aang and La, Ocean's Fury

While you have Momo, Friendly Flier on the battlefield, the first other non-Lemur creature you cast each turn will cost 1 less mana. That mana discount allows you to quickly build up an army of creatures to outnumber your opponent. Momo also gets a +1/+1 bonus each time another creature you control with flying enters play. By using the Airbending ability to recast creatures, you'll be able to pump Momo up turn after turn.

This deck has quite the theme of flying creatures built into it. It should come as no surprise to see both Empyrean Eagle and Air Nomad Legacy included in this deck, since both of these cards provide a bonus to creatures you control that have flying.

Another card that can give your fliers a bit of a boost is Aang, Swift Savior, or perhaps more correctly, the flipside of Aang, Swift Savior, Aang and La, Ocean's Fury. Once you've transformed Aang, Swift Savior into Aang and La, Ocean's Fury via Waterbending, Aang and La put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control that is tapped whenever they attack. Those extra +1/+1 counters can help you quickly overpower your opponent during battle.

Mono-Green Earthbending Toph

The final deck I have for you this week is a Mono-Green deck featuring the Earthbending friend of Aang, Toph. Let's check it out.

Toph, the Blind Bandit

Toph, the Blind Bandit lets you Earthbend 2 when she enters play. This allows you to target a land you control, turning it into a 0/0 creature with 2 +1/+1 counters on it. When this land creature dies or is exiled, it will return to the battlefield tapped, making Fabled Passage the perfect land to Earthbend.

The Earth King brings with him a 4/4 Bear creature token when he enters play. He also allows you to search your deck for a number of basic land cards to put into play tapped equal to the number of creatures you control with 4 or more power that attacked during your turn. Being able to drastically increase the amount of lands you have in play makes this deck very dangerous.

Because of the number of extra lands you can put into play each turn, it should come as no surprise that a trio of creature cards will be top notch in this deck. Sazh's Chocobo gains a +1/+1 counter whenever you achieve landfall. Tifa Lockhart has her power doubled until the end of the turn when you achieve landfall. Finally, there's Mossborn Hydra, who sees the number of +1/+1 counters it has get doubled whenever landfall happens for you. This trio of creatures can truly become monstrous on the battlefield.
