More Marvel Super Heroes Previews Assemble

Reddit

Previews for the next Magic: the Gathering expansion, Marvel Super Heroes, are in full swing.

This new Universes Beyond release is turning quite a few heads compared to the likes of Marvel's Spider-Man from last year. There are tons of really sweet-looking cards representing a veritable who's who of classic Marvel characters.

Following the initial Debut Stream on Tuesday, June 2nd, we've seen all kinds of awesome cards, ranging from main set delights to epic Source Material Cards. This time, previews are rolling along for the main set with Commander being the focus next week.

There's a ton to cover so let's get right into it.

Heroes

First up we have some of the new Hero cards that have been revealed.

She-Hulk has become a fan favorite over the years, especially after the Marvel Cinematic Universe series from a few years back. Thankfully, her card, Jennifer Walters // The Sensational She-Hulk, doesn't disappoint.

We've been seeing a greater number of cards that care about stopping your opponents from casting spells on your turn. This makes her front side a fantastic option and suits the character well as a lawyer. Once you have enough mana, you can transform her into a huge Creature that still maintains the ability to stop your opponents.

With how big of a card Voice of Victory has become over the past year, you can expect to see plenty of She-Hulk in the near future.

We also get to see another fan favorite make an appearance as both Falcon, Winged Wonder and his eventual incarnation as Captain America, Wings of Freedom.

As Falcon, Winged Wonder, he provides a fun, if simple, Limited threat. Decent-sized Creatures with Flying are always standouts for both Draft and Sealed. He also brings with him another small Flying Creature, so I'd expect him to be a surprisingly strong card in the format.

If you really want to go strong, though, you should absolutely make good use of Captain America, Wings of Freedom. On its own, this card is a powerful attacker, offering a strong body with both Flying and First Strike. As a bonus, he also pumps your board. Typically, this only happens in small doses, but if you can pump up his toughness - especially with Captain America's Shield - you can turn him into a serious threat.

Ironheart, Clever Champion is an especially exciting card for Commander fans.

Inspiring Statuary has become quite popular over the years for Artifact-heavy decks. Now, Ironheart provides some additional redundancy for this strategy. Best of all, you can even run her in the Command Zone if you want to go all-in on that effect.

It'll be interesting to see if she has some play in older formats as well. With Affinity taking over in Modern, there might be some potential for her to make an appearance there or in similar decks for older formats. There's a lot of love here, and is one I'd keep my eye on.

Both Colleen Wing, Street Samurai and Quake, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. provide some additional support for Heroes at Uncommon. Quake is going to be a real contender in Limited, as with the right build-up, you can easily tap down several Creatures every turn.

Villains

As ever, the Villains play just as big of a role in this set as the Heroes do. Let's have a look at some of the ones revealed today.

Magic fans love Crucible of Worlds effects, and they also love some good old fashioned redundancy. Mole Man, Moloid Master provides both of these, offering up yet another means of playing Lands out of your graveyard.

Unlike most of the cards with this ability, though, Mole Man offers a little more bang for your buck. Every time you play a Land card, you get a 1/1 token that can let you mill into even more Lands to bring back.

There are also a number of players who are a big fan of poison counters, something that's been true since the game's earliest years. Snakes go hand in hand with them as well, with some of the earliest cards that gave these counters being Serpent Generator and Marsh Viper.

Now we get The Serpent Society. In order to deal with this dangerous threat, you need to pay the Ward cost of getting five poison counters. Try it twice and that's game over for you. The stats on this card are also fantastic, meaning it's sure to be a fan favorite among a certain contingent of players.

Absorbing Man does something very interesting. He is a sort of Clone effect, but doesn't do so in a way that copies Creatures. Instead, he turns into an Artifact, Enchantment, or Land while still remaining a Creature at the same time. That's an extremely unique twist on what a Clone can be and is certain to raise many judge calls in the future.

I have to imagine many Magic fans were hoping to see Ares as a part of the God of War crossover that came out late last year. Instead, we get a much more Marvel-themed iteration here with Ares, God of War.

Ares loves to attack, and he keeps bringing back your other Creatures as they die in combat. He even manages to routinely bring himself back this way, making him very fitting among the many examples of God cards that are difficult to deal with for good.

Don't be afraid to give your best Kratos impression as you cast it over and over again.

Much like how the Heroes boast a handful of Uncommon Legends, so too do the Villains. Both Abomination, Terrifying Titan and Grim Reaper, Lethal Legionnaire are huge threats that demand an answer as soon as they hit the board. I'd be especially scared if Grim Reaper is allowed to stick around, as getting back Creatures turn after turn can be a devastating way to close out games of Limited.

Everything Else

In addition to the Heroes and Villains themselves, a handful of other spells were shown off over the last day.

One of the most interesting was certainly Earth's Mightiest Heroes. This card was revealed as an email preview and is a great way to drop some big Creatures onto the battlefield. In games of Constructed, it's pretty hard to pull off effectively. In a game of Commander or Limited where you might be able to account for it, though, you can really cheat on mana and net a huge number of Creatures onto the battlefield.

A number of new Plan cards were also unveiled. Some of these are especially fun, with Rewrite History giving you the opportunity to loot several times (draw then discard) and buy back some key spells as the game goes on. Claim the Kingdom can similarly make one of your Creatures huge and nigh impossible to deal with.

Thus far, we've only seen a small number of cards which synergize with these Plans. They're definitely something to keep your eyes on as more and more previews get shown off.

Last but not least, I wanted to be sure to highlight a very noteworthy reprint. After a number of years, Thirst for Knowledge, a beloved card draw spell, is back once more. The last time we saw it in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, it sadly didn't do very much. Will it manage to break out in Standard this time or is it once again destined to remain a relic of the past?

Conclusion

That wraps up another day of Marvel Super Heroes previews.

There's just one more day of individual main set promos before we start kicking things into high gear next week with Commander. It's time to get excited and see what awesome characters and cards remain waiting in the wings.
