The Best Cards for Cube from 2025: Black

Reddit

Black is always a strong color when it comes to Limited or Sealed. It often has the most efficient removal and card draw options. Black also usually has some drain effects like Blood Artist that get through clogged board states and help you win games without even going to combat. 2025 was no different when it came to the best cards for Cube. Avatar: the Last Airbender brought a lot of powerful cards into Cube and one of them even made it into the famous Powered Cube on Arena! Let's dive into the list!

Honorable Mention - Venerated Stormsinger

Venerated Stormsinger

Venerated Stormsinger is a Blood Artist that makes bodies to sacrifice. At first you might think that makes this card incredibly powerful, but it is four mana to cast. It also needs to attack to create one token and Venerated Stormsinger is only a 3/3 making it likely to not survive combat. These reasons are why it is an honorable mention and not on the list, but I still think it could see play in a lower powered Cube or one more focused on sacrifice.

5. Avenger of the Fallen

Avenger of the Fallen

Avenger of the Fallen is a card I believed would overtake formats, but unfortunately, it fell quite flat. It still does a lot of work in grindy settings and that's why I believe it makes a great card for Cube. It is already pretty good for only 3 mana, being a 2/4 with deathtouch, but the added bonus of making a lot of creatures pushes this card over the top.

4. Cornered by Black Mages

Cornered by Black Mages

Cornered by Black Mages is an excellent upscale of the classic removal spell Diabolic Edict. For one more mana than its predecessor you get to create a 0/1 wizard token that pings on the cast of noncreature spells you cast. I love this noncreature theme that Rakdos seems to be leaning toward lately since it has so much artifact support. It also works great in a Dimir control shell, leveraging lots of card draw spells and counter magic. The two Black pips in this card also force the players drafting the Cube to pay attention to their mana base, a Cube skill that all players should learn.

3. Raven Eagle

Raven Eagle

Raven Eagle is just a good card. There's not a whole lot to say here. It is evasive, cheap to cast, draws cards, removes key graveyard pieces, and drains your opponent's life total, while boosting your own. Raven Eagle might be one of the best Bird cards we've seen in a while...other than a certain owl... and it's not even in White or Blue?! What's up with that?

2. Obsessive Pursuit

Obsessive Pursuit

Phyrexian Arena is old news. Obsessive Pursuit is the version of Arena that can actually benefit your overall gameplan. As soon as this two-mana enchantment enters you lose 1 life and gain a clue token. You also will do this on each of your upkeeps making this a consistent way to generate artifacts and card advantage.

Believe it or not, this enchantment has even more words on it! Whenever you attack you put X +1/+1 counters on a creature where X is the number of permanents you sacrificed. AND if it's 3 or more that creature also gains lifelink until end of turn! This enchantment is so insanely powerful, it belongs in many Commander decks moving forward, as well as lots of Cubes too! I would pick up a few of these while they are relatively cheap!

1. Fire Nation Occupation

Fire Nation Occupation

You might be wondering how a card is more powerful than Obsessive Pursuit. Well, there is one more Black enchantment that is just slightly over it. Fire Nation Occupation creates a 2/2 with Firebending 1 when it enters, and whenever you cast a spell during your opponent's turn. This card is an engine that makes a creature immediately.

Casting spells during your opponent's turn is not that hard, especially when this card is on the Black side of the color wheel. Cut Down, Murderous Cut, and Murder are all classic kill spells you can play during your opponent's turn that now would generate you a creature. If you splash Blue for Dimir you can cast Counterspell and get a creature. If you splash Red for Rakdos you can cast Lightning Bolt and get a creature.

Turning each instant speed removal spell into a free 2/2 creature is so insanely powerful it has even ended up on the list of Powered Cube, the most powerful Cube to ever exist!

That wraps up the 2025 best Black Cube cards! I hope you enjoyed looking at these and look forward to the next list coming soon!

See you on the battlefield!
