Building Hearthhull, the Worldseed in Commander

Reddit

Hearthhull, the Worldseed

Believe it or not, our next set, Edge of Eternities, is on its way soon. This space themed set is filled with all sorts of new cards and mechanics to play around with. Edge of Eternities has introduced the brand new artifact type, Spacecraft, and some of them are eligible to be your Commander. Hearthhull, the Worldseed is a Jund lands-matter Commander. Hearthhull is the alternative Commander in the new precon. Hearthhull is built around sacrificing lands in order to drain our opponents' life totals. Jund has lots of cards that allow us to play lands out of the graveyard and cards that want us to sacrifice permanents. Let's go ahead and hit the hyperdrive straight into brewing this new legend!

Exploring Lands

Misty Rainforest
Evolving Wilds
Tomb of Urami

First things first, this deck needs lots of lands. Since our Commander wants us to sacrifice them for value we need to make sure we have a steady flow of them. This list is playing 40 of them! Now, your wallet might be crying at some of the prices on the fetch lands, but you do not necessarily need them. Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, and Maestros Theatre are all great budget fetches to include. We just want to make sure we are playing lands that will sacrifice themselves.

Hearthhull also serves as a sacrifice outlet for our lands. Hearthhull will draw us some cards while also fueling our graveyard with lands. All we need now is a way to play our lands from our graveyard.

Ramunap Excavator
Conduit of Worlds
Walk-In Closet // Forgotten Cellar

Ramunap Excavator, Walk-In Closet // Forgotten Cellar, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds are all cards that allow us to play our lands out of our graveyard. Almost all of our lands can sacrifice themselves or at least get sacrificed to our Commander, meaning we will always have lands in our graveyard to play. Hearthhull's static drain ability is our main way to win the game so we need to prioritize playing and replaying our lands to drain out the table. In order to get our commander online we need to get some charge counters on it by tapping some creatures. It's time to assemble our Jund space crew to manage this station.

Assembling the Perfect Crew

Akoum Hellhound
Lotus Cobra
Tifa Lockhart

We need to put some power on the board in the early game to get our station up and running as fast as possible. Akoum Hellhound and Sazh's Chocobo will grow in power when we trigger landfall, which fits in perfectly. Lotus Cobra is a classic ramp piece for landfall decks that now serves a new purpose of running a space station.

Scythecat Cub and Tifa Lockhart are early game pieces to help power up Hearthhull, but also can become late game threats. The more lands we play the stronger they get. Wayward Swordtooth can't attack or block for a couple of turns normally, however he can help put some charge counters on our commander.

Now that Hearthhull is fully operational, it's time to focus on gaining advantage off our lands entering and leaving play. Here are some more cards that are focused around our land strategy:

Lands In, Lands Out

Tunneling Geopede
Chocobo Racetrack
Titania, Protector of Argoth

Spitfire Lagac, Tunneling Geopede, Retreat to Hagra, and Sabotender trigger off us playing our lands and help our strategy of draining our opponents while playing lands. While we are playing lands and draining our opponents, we don't tend to have lots of big creatures in play. This makes us an easy target for players going to combat. We can lean on some token generators on Landfall triggers to help generate some blockers or late game beaters.

Scute Swarm and Chocobo Raceway are the two token generators I went for. Zendikar's Roil used to be one of my go to token generators in a lands deck, but now we have Chocobo Raceway. Chocobo tokens are extremely good in this deck since they will be able to consistently raise their power each turn. Titania, Protector of Argoth is also technically a token generator, however I label this as more of a game ender since it can make giant bodies out of thin air. These token generators are better the more lands we can play on our turn, luckily we have some cards to make that happen.

The Gitrog Monster
Azusa, Lost but Seeking
Exploration

Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Exploration, and The Gitrog Monster are cards that allow us to play more lands each turn. Pair any of these cards with a card like Crucible of Worlds and we are starting to assemble a win. While all of these cards help us make consistent land drops and slowly drain out the table, we need one big push in order to become threatening. Let's dive into our win conditions!

Winning in a Landslide

Once we have our Commander up to eight charge counters, we can start to drain our opponents. In order to wipe them off the face of the earth, we need to sacrifice lots of lands in a single turn. Luckily, we have many ways to do that in Jund.

Devastating Summons
Scapeshift
Will of the Sultai

Devastating Summons, Reprocess, Nahiri's Lithoforming, and Zuran Orb allow us to sacrifice as many lands as we want in one shot. Even if we have six lands in play, that is draining our opponents for a whopping twelve life! Most of these spells also have an upside of drawing us some cards or gaining massive creatures. Scapeshift is the best card in the deck, no question. Sacrificing our lands to get a whole batch of new ones into play makes sure we have lands in play after sacrificing our original lot.

Just in case we lose all of our lands and we still don't win, there are lots of ways to return them from the graveyard. Splendid Reclamation, Worldsoul's Rage, Will of the Sultai, and Aftermath Analyst will bring back all lands from our graveyard and put them into play. We then can sacrifice them again to something like Zuran Orb or simply cast another Reprocess effect. Not to mention all of our other landfall triggers happening when we cast these spells as well.

That is how Hearthhull, the Worldseed will bury your opponents. Hearthhull is a nice change of pace to Jund and allows you to play some neat combinations of cards. If you pick up this new precon from Edge of Eternities, consider changing the commander to Hearthhull and give it a test drive.

See you on the battlefield!
