A Huge Banned and Restricted Announcement Hits Magic

Vivi Ornitier
Heartfire Hero
Entomb

The latest banned and restricted announcement was released this Monday morning by Wizards. Thanks to the dominance of Izzet Cauldron and the shoddy state of Standard, this update proved to be hotly anticipated. The update didn't disappoint, with Vivi Ornitier, Proft's Eidetic Memory, and Screaming Nemesis all being banned from the format. Several others were banned like Heartfire Hero in Pioneer, Entomb and Nadu, Winged Wisdom in Legacy, and High Tide in Pauper.

If you'd like to read all the details, you can check out the official article here or read my write-up on the topic here on CoolStuffInc.

Additionally, the day after the B&R announcement was a regular WeeklyMTG stream that focused on the B&R discussion. Most of what was in the article was covered in that stream, as well as discussion on a few other cards that were considered for bans. Perhaps most important was the reveal of several tentative dates for every B&R announcement in 2026. Additionally, during the stream it was mentioned that the next RCQ season announcement will come in February, and this mention came during the Pioneer discussion.

If you'd like to check out the stream VOD, you can find it right here.

Trick Jarrett Leaves Wizards of the Coast

Well, it's time I share some exciting news! I am going to be starting a new adventure and, after nearly 14 years, I'll be leaving Wizards. Tomorrow will be my last day.

I've written something up on my blog (and screen capped it on this post): www.trickjarrett.com/sharing-some...

There are a number of names I've recognized for years and years as mainstays within the walls of Wizards of the Coast. One such name is Trick Jarrett, whose name I recall seeing on tons of articles on the WotC mothership throughout the 2010s when I returned to the game. This week marks his last week with the company after 14 years there. He's been a force among the community and his presence in the company will be missed.

It's worth mentioning as well that, as Trick notes in his farewell write-up, he previously worked with GatheringMagic. That site was managed and later merged right here into the CoolStuffInc library. You can check out all his works from those early days right here.

Best of luck on your next adventure, Trick!

Decklist of the Week

Usually after a major ban announcement impacts the Standard format, I'd showcase some newer tournament winning deck. However, with a new set coming out the day this article goes live, there's little sense in doing so. Instead, I'd like to focus on a little on Pauper, which saw a big Magic Online Super RCQ event take place using the format.

The event boasted hundreds of players all vying for invites to their local Regional Championship events. The winner was Elves - perhaps best known as my personal favorite archetype! This deck wins by utilizing tons of small mana dorks to spit out massive threats and win the game. Previously, you'd do this with Lys Alana Huntmaster making tons of tokens and Timberwatch Elf. While Timberwatch remains a major threat, the deck has shifted instead to utilizing major threats like Avenging Hunter, Generous Ent, and Nyxborn Hydra to close out games.

If you're looking for something powerful to play during the Magic Online Pauper championship this week, this is definitely a great choice!
