Ten Pauper Cards That Need More Reprints!

Reddit

Welcome back to another week of covering sweet Pauper cards that are in need of reprints! Over the past several weeks now, I've taken a look at a whole host of cards from different era of the game - old and new alike - that players really need more copies of.

If you'd like you read all of those, you can check them out here:

Most of the above articles focused on cards that lacked any kind of real meaningful reprint at all. This is essentially what I consider to not qualify as "meaningful reprints:"

  • Commander decks (unless printed in several)
  • Secret Lairs
  • Mystery Boosters
  • The List
  • Special Guests
  • Select bonus sheets (Final Fantasy, Marvel)
  • Jumpstart
  • Promos

Typically, these cards would only feature a single printing, maybe two at best, from years prior. However, when it comes to the pre-Pioneer era of the game, there are also a number of cards that have seen meaningful reprints but still need more. Many of these are multi-format all-stars, which makes it difficult to keep cards readily available. In many cases, they had one or two meaningful reprints when they probably needed closer to five or six of them. As such, I'm going to explore the Pauper staples from this era that need even more reprints than they already have!

There's plenty to discuss and go over, so let's get to the cards themselves!

Honorable Mention: Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain

Brainstorm
Ponder
Preordain

This one's almost a gimmie at this point, frankly. It's well known that all three of these classic cantrip spells are beloved by players in every format they're legal in from Pauper to Vintage to Commander to Cube. Because of this, WotC continuously prints new copies, ensuring more are available. Despite this, the cards are so popular that they still continue to need more copies. This gets the honorable mention because it's going to keep happening, it just needs to keep happening.

10. Manamorphose

Manamorphose

If you've played combo decks in most formats - particularly spell-based combo - you've likely played with copies of Manamorphose. It's a staple of multiple formats for these kinds of decks, though to a much lesser degree in Pauper. Still, when it does show up, it's a good few dollars a copy and they can be a bit scarce. This may be a bit surprising given that it's had multiple Masters set reprints, but even that isn't enough to satisfy the many players in numerous formats who need copies.

9. Carrion Feeder

Carrion Feeder

Carrion Feeder has had probably one of the bigger reprints among cards on this list thanks to a printing in Modern Horizons as well as Eternal Masters over the last decade. Despite these printings, it can be surprisingly tricky to find copies of the card, owing in small part to its added utility in Modern. In Pauper, though, it's been a minor favorite but has become all the more important with the innovation of the Mono-Black Sacrifice decks. Bloodthrone Vampire could maybe use a reprint for this reason too despite multiple printings in the 2010s, but Carrion Feeder is certainly the more needed reprint here.

8. Mesmeric Fiend

Mesmeric Fiend

Mesmeric Fiend has only had one major reprinting in Masters 25. That was accessible enough that it's made copies stay relatively affordable, but not necessarily a deep enough supply for those who may need copies. That's a bit of an issue when it's been growing in popularity as a sideboard option for several Pauper decks as of late - something another reprint could help quite a bit with.

7. Crop Rotation

Crop Rotation

Thanks to the unban of Prophetic Prism earlier in the year, Flicker Tron lists have been making a bit of a comeback. Thanks to the changing texture of the format since the card was originally banned in 2022, the deck is more modest in its power level. Still, though, it remains a fan favorite, and it loves to use copies of Crop Rotation to ensure the deck finds its Tron pieces. The only problem, however, is that it's a Commander staple with only a handful of major printings. This can make it a bit pricey among Pauper staples and signals the need for more copies of the powerful instant.

6. Songs of the Damned

Songs of the Damned

Here's another combo card. In this case, it's an extremely narrow one that only really gets used in one deck: Cycle Storm. The deck needs a full four copies to function, though, and the singular reprint in Ultimate Masters scarcely put enough out there for players to acquire. If Wizards can put out a fresh reprint for this card, it would be a huge help for those looking to pick up such a cool and unique deck.

5. The Blasts (Blue Elemental Blast, Red Elemental Blast, Pyroblast, Hydroblast)

Hydroblast

Compared to a lot of cards on this list, the Blasts especially have seen quite a number of printings over the years. Most of them were repeatedly printed in the game's early days as well as having received reprints in various Masters sets and special release sets. Despite this, Pauper players everywhere need numerous copies of each. Personally, I have probably 20+ of each for all my decks and that's still not enough! More copies are definitely something that could go a long way to ensure the long-term sustainability of the format.

4. Ashnod's Altar

Ashnod's Altar

Back when Pauper's format unification took place in 2019, players quickly took notice of Ashnod's Altar as a card that could one day break. The question became "how do you do this?" As time has gone on, Altar Tron has become a beloved way to utilize the card, looping Myr Retrievers alongside cards like Golem Foundry and Pactdoll Terror to win. Ashnod's Altar saw a couple big reprints in Eternal Masters and The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts bonus sheet. Despite this, it remains a pricey card, between Pauper and Commander combo uses. More reprints are absolutely needed on this one.

3. Snuff Out

Snuff Out

Snuff Out is a pretty evergreen card in Pauper. Just about every Black deck wants it depending on the metagame and it's also got a solid pedigree in formats like Legacy, Commander, and Cube as well. Thankfully, it's gotten some pretty high profile reprints in popular Commander precons which - combined with the card being down in utility recently - has managed to bring down the price a bit. Still, it's a good couple dollars per copy and is essential enough that it could stand to receive a few more strong reprints.

2. The Mirrodin Artifact Lands (Ancient Den, Seat of the Synod, Vault of Whispers, Great Furnace, and Tree of Tales)

Ancient Den
Seat of the Synod
Vault of Whispers
Great Furnace
Tree of Tales

In a weird twist of fate, the artifact lands have lost a modest amount of their utility thanks to the introduction of the indestructible bridges from Modern Horizons 2. Thanks to how heavily printed that set was, as well as further reprints in Commander precons, those are pretty easy to get. The original Mirrodin lands are a different story. They only appeared in that set and then in a bunch of Commander decks, a Secret Lair, and some The List printings. It's hardly enough to keep up with the demand for these powerful cards and they need a real reprint at some point - perhaps in a future Masters release.

1. Relic of Progenitus

Relic of Progenitus

Last time, I talked about Faerie Macabre's utility as a core piece of graveyard hate to multiple formats that needs more reprints. Relic of Progenitus is an example of a similar situation - only this card has seen quite a number of printings over the years! Multiple Masters sets, preconstructed decks, and even Mystery Booster 2 have all seen it get solid reprints. Despite this, it remains a solid couple dollars per copy. Given how ubiquitous this card can be, it certainly needs more availability than it's gotten thus far.
