Preview season is in full effect as the Marvel Super Heroes previews continue. It's the final day of the first week of coverage for the latest Magic: the Gathering release and there are plenty of awesome cards to check out.
Marvel Super Heroes is proving to be absolutely jam packed with tons of classic heroes, villains, story moments, and more. All things that make the Marvel universe so fun and exciting and they're all coming to Magic.
There's a solid number of sweet cards to check out today, so let's not waste time and start checking them out.
The Heroes
Let's start off with the Heroes of Marvel Super Heroes. There aren't very many today, but there are still some sweet ones that are worth talking about.
The big Hero card revealed today was The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster, a female version of the popular superhero. She's an absolute beater with great stats as a 3/3 Flying Creature for just three mana. Even better, though, is the way she continuously flickers Artifacts and Creatures turn after turn.
Azorius Momo is a solid player for Standard right now, having just won the most recent Regional Championship, and Jane Foster seems like she fits in quite nicely there. Momo, Friendly Flier lowest the cost of Flying Creatures, making her even more deadly and giving you a perfect opportunity to repeatedly make use of her flickering abilities as the game goes on.
The majority of the Heroes shown off today were ultimately the Uncommons. Two of these were quite noteworthy.
Wiccan, Rising Magician reads like a fixed Displacer Kitten, allowing you to flicker cards as you cast spells. Instead of the cards immediately returning to the battlefield, though, they return at the beginning of the next end step, which makes it a little more palatable.
The other intriguing option is easily Speedball, New Warrior. It's extremely fun to play with, as you can make him stronger by casting spells targeting him, only to redirect them to an opponent's Creature after the fact. That's certain to make him extremely difficult to deal with in Limited and possibly a scary threat in Constructed as well.
Most of the other Uncommon Legends are little more than simple Limited fodder. Most of these cards will do something fairly cool, but only one time. A good example of this is how Stature, Size Shifter is generally a small Creature, but one time you can turn her into a huge threat after going in for an attack.
The Villains
Even fewer cards were revealed on the Villains side of things with only a small handful of notable cards showing up thus far.
The big one is Scientiest Supreme of A.I.M. This card does something extremely interesting: it copies activated and triggered abilities of Artifacts you control. Copying these kinds of abilities isn't especially new, as we've seen similar effects on cards like Strionic Resonator in the past. However, they are quite rare, making them always turn a number of heads when they show up. Definitely keep your eyes on this card.
The only other two Villains shown off were Red Hulk and Arnim Zola, Bio-Fanatic. While Red Hulk is largely just a big idiot, Arnim Zola is a means by which you can slowly build up an army over several turns. In games of Limited, you'll definitely want to take him out fast, lest you end up overrun by tokens.
Everything Else
The real meat and potatoes this time around seems to be on everything but the Legendary Creatures. Instead, we get a ton of really powerful effects on a variety of other spells of all types that are worth taking a look at.
As noted during the Debut Stream on Tuesday, the Cosmic Cube is one of the most powerful items in the entire Marvel franchise. As a result, it needed a truly epic representation, and boy did it get one. As you play bigger and better Creatures, you can attack with them to cast even more epic spells out of your deck. Naturally, this is going to be best in Commander, but it's almost certain to be a fun build-around option regardless of the format you play it in.
Soul Sisters fans rejoice, as Heroic Feast provides a fun new payoff for whenever you gain life. This can provide a fun option for Commander fans everywhere as well as create some interesting new build-arounds in Standard. Just think about how a deck playing copies of Virulent Emissary and Haliya, Guided by Light might work with this sweet card.
In the past, Assemble the Legion was a huge finisher card for Control decks. Alien Invasion isn't nearly as explosive, only creating one token per turn, but it's still enough that it can get out of control fast if left unchecked. It'll be very fun to see if players
If you played during Dominaria standard, you may be familiar with a little card called Seal Away. Super Villain Lockup acts as a functional reprint of this classic Enchantment that was extremely powerful in Control shells of the era. It's priced to move and as such, is almost certain to make a splash in Standard once again through this new version.
If you're more of a Green player looking for ways to pick off opposing Creatures, fret not, as there are two all new fighting spells revealed today.
Epic Fight is naturally the more exciting option, allowing you to make your Creature huge before taking down an opponent's Creature. Best of all, though, is the way it's worded allows you to cast it only as a power up spell rather than a fight spell. After all, if you're fighting, why wouldn't you want to go for the doubling effect?
While Epic Fight is certainly the flashier card, Punishing Punch is likely to be the one that ends up seeing more Constructed play. It's not difficult to get it down to only one mana, which makes it extremely powerful for aggressive Green decks like Landfall.
Today, we're also getting to see several of the remaining Source Material Cards previews. At the time of writing, only two of these cards have been revealed: Path to Exile and Righteous Fury.
Path to Exile has become all too common of a reprint for these bonus sheets and shows up here with a defeated Captain America on it. The other one, Righteous Fury, is a bit more notable due to its scarcity. While it's arguably quite worse than most other Wrath of God-style sweepers, it's only ever been printed in Portal: Second Age and Starter 1999, making it surprisingly hard to come by.
Conclusion
That wraps things up for the first week of Marvel Super Heroes previews. While this is largely expected to be the last of the individual main set previews, we're still likely to see some next week as well. Week two is all about the four Commander decks and each of those is sure to include some cards from the main set in them as well.
Everything previewed thus far is fully visible right here on CoolStuffInc's Marvel Super Heroes page. Check out all the awesome cards the latest set has to offer and lock in your preorders now. If sealed product is more your speed, no worries. There's plenty of that to go around as well.
Prerelease is just two weeks away on June 19th, so be sure to check with your local game store to find out all the details on their events.
