This Week in Lorcana: Friday, February 14

Reddit

Welcome, Illumineers! This week, we're all about the swarm of reveals from Disney Lorcana's upcoming set, Archazia's Island, due out in hobby stores on March 7th (which is just 21 days away!) We'll also take a look at the results from a massive weekend-long event with two major tournaments with over $15K worth of prizing across all the prize pools. Let's jump in!

Reveals this week from Archazia's Island

Ravensburger

From the Disney Lorcana site, Ravensburger has dropped a TON of reveals to kick off the spoiler season.

So, we've had our first look at Dual-inks here but now we know a bit more about what they do, their limitations, and what they bring to Lorcana.

  • Dual-ink cards are considered both of their respective ink colors when it comes to deck restrictions. That means Bolt - Superdog can only be in an Amber/Steel deck.
  • They help strengthen synergies between both decks using common and not-so-common ink pairings.

We were also given a slew of dual ink cards right off the bat:

Along with dual-ink cards, we get to see some new cards from new franchises, such as The Aristocats, Bolt, and Lady and the Tramp!

The Aristocats

Bolt

Lady and the Tramp

These new additions to the game are not only great for Limited play, but some of these cards are high contenders for Constructed as well. I'm really excited to see some of the innovation right out the gate after release.

The Gamer

The Gamer's reveal was probably one of the most controversial ones yet as it showcases Lorcana's first foray into resource destruction, and highly polarizing mechanics from other popular trading card games, such as Magic: The Gathering. Let's take a look:

Ink Geyser is a 3-cost, non-inkable action for Emerald/Sapphire decks that reads the following:

Each player exerts all the cards in their inkwell. Then each player with more than 3 cards in their inkwell returns cards at random from their inkwell to their hand until they have 3 cards in their inkwell.

This effect is more of like a destruction-lite mechanic as each player gets affected by it, and the cards actually go in your hand, not your discard pile. Played at the right time, and you could not only stop what was once an inevitable Be Prepared, but a possible follow up to Sisu - Empowered Sibling shortly after. Given that Emerald has a lot of great low-cost characters and Sapphire has the ability to ramp, you could almost look at this as a one-sided resource wipe once Sapphire rapidly ramps up on a following turn. Other Sapphire-based decks will most likely be re-evaluating Fishbone Quill to quickly establish readied ink to utilize, just in case another Ink Geyser gets deployed in the future. I'm planning on writing a more in-depth article on how to navigate such an impactful card, so you could "Be Prepared" once this card begins to reign havoc.

Wargamer

Wargamer previewed two cards for Archazia's Island, and they're pretty solid:

Rajah - Ghostly Tiger

Rajah is a great solid 2-cost inkable character that has a new keyword for this set: Vanish. Reads the following:

When an opponent chooses this character for an action, banish them.

This keyword forces decks to include more actions to deal with Illusion characters either through simple means, or by brute force challenges. It's too early to tell how impactful they will be, but it might be time to look at some 1-2 cost actions to include in your builds next set that can keep these characters in check.

Giant Cobra - Ghostly Serpent

Giant Cobra is an absolute unit that must be respected, due to its effect, Mysterious Advantage, which allows you to discard a card to gain 2 lore when it's played. Amethyst continues to lean into more non-interactive lore gain which means they can apply pressure much earlier than other inks. Given the stats on this character, you will without a doubt see this in Amethyst Steel decks in the future.

Freddy Rivera wins the South Side Gaming Lucky 10K Tournament

Freddy Rivera, of team Illuminati, takes down South Side Gaming's first ever 10K right here in South Florida. Piloting a deck he's well known for, Steel song, against Jonathan Williams in one of the most unfavored matchups, Ruby Sapphire was a match for the books. Let's take a look at his winning list for the event:

Freddy piloted a more traditional Steel song deck this weekend and it paid off quite well in the process. The difference between characters with 2 or 3 Strength are so critical in the Ruby Sapphire matchup, which is why you can see the emphasis on using Mr. Smee, Gaston, and Lawrence. This list screams to go fast and it certainly does in the right situation, unopposed with removal options. Piglet applies great pressure when combined with Pete if you're afraid of cards like Brawl or Be Prepared. Thanks Freddy for showing how strong Steel song is as we begin to sunset the Azurite Seas meta!

Justin Shaft wins the South Side Gaming 2nd Chance 5K Tournament

In the traditional revenge fashion, Justin Shaft realized how threatening the field was with all the Amber Steel and came back fully prepared to answer it and many other threats. Here's his list:

Justin Shaft piloted the same list that DKP used to take 1st place in the Disney Lorcana Challenge: Melbourne event and repeated history showing that this version of Ruby/Sapphire is here to stay for just a few more weeks. In the finals, he played against Melissa "Lizardkitty" Ilgner piloting an Amethyst/Steel deck performing quite well throughout the day. Congrats to both of the finalists!

That's it for this week! Tune in for more previews for Archazia's Island, as we eagerly await its release date on March 7th at hobby shops, such as CoolStuff Games!
