Top 5 Lifelink Equipment Cards in Magic: The Gathering

Reddit

Any card with Lifelink restores life equal to the damage it deals. While it's usually a Creature ability, there are always outliers. Today, we're looking at the top Lifelink Equipment in Magic, so you can tack it on to your heavy hitters.

Equipment are Artifacts that have an additional cost to attach them to a Creature. Even though we can only do this as a Sorcery, it can give us some pretty strong effects.

Sometimes, you just get an X/X pump, or a strategic effect like "when this Creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card." In our case, we're looking at Equipment that gives Lifelink.

You know what they say, if you don't have your own, store bought is fine.

5 Best Lifelink Equipment in Magic: The Gathering

There are a few different Lifelink enablers in the game but Equipment is one of the more reliable options. Instants and Sorceries can do it until the end of turn, but Artifacts tend to stick around until someone finds a way to remove them.

Here's the best Equipment that gives Lifelink:

  1. Leech Gauntlet
  2. Basilisk Collar
  3. Shadowspear
  4. Loxodon Warhammer
  5. Batterskull

No matter what your strategy is, these Equipment options make it easy to turn every attack into a swin in your favor. I'll explain how.

5. Leech Gauntlet

Leech Gauntlet

Leech Gauntlet is a solid, low-cost Equipment that leans into a spells-matter game plan. For just a small mana investment, it gives the equipped Creature Lifelink and triggers whenever you cast a noncreature spell.

Every cantrip, removal spell, or copy effect turns into incremental life drain. On top of that, the Gauntlet comes with a Reconfigure ability for 4. It can be an Equipment but it can also stand on its own as a 2/2.

It's not as explosive as some of the higher-cost options, but in the right deck, Leech Gauntlet can provide a good amount of lift.

4. Basilisk Collar

Basilisk Collar

Basilisk Collar is next and it only costs one mana to cast, and 2 to equip. Once it's on, that Creature has Deathtouch and Lifelink. So, not only can you gain life with every swing, but your opponent also loses every Creature that blocks you.

This is a really low-cost card for most decks to run, especially in Commander, because you don't have to worry about fitting into any color restrictions. That versatility definitely gave it some extra points.

Wall of Blossoms
Doran, the Siege Tower

If you think a big swing is coming your way and need a defensive threat, it's easy to throw Basilisk Collar onto a Creature like Wall of Blossoms or Doran, the Siege Tower to make attacking you less enticing.

3. Shadowspear

Shadowspear

Third on our list is the first Legendary Artifact, Shadowspear.

This card is another low-cost option at 1 to cast and 2 to equip. It's great because for so little mana, it pumps the equipped Creature +1/+1 and gives them Trample along with Lifelink.

The +1/+1 isn't much, but it's just a bonus compared to the other effects. Allowing you to trample over your opponent's defending Creatures while gaining you life is what puts this Equipment ahead of the others.

Shadowspear also has the added benefit of an activated ability. At Sorcery speed, we can pay one to strip our opponents Creatures of Hexproof and Indestructible until EOT.

Heroic Intervention
Avacyn, Angel of Hope

In addition to that, Shadowspear's activated ability allows you to get past protection cards such as Heroic Intervention or Avacyn, Angel of Hope, rendering these typically tricky threats nothing to worry about.

2. Loxodon Warhammer

Loxodon Warhammer

Next is an oldie, but a goodie, Loxodon Warhammer. First printed in Mirrodin, this card gives all three:

  • +3/+0
  • Trample
  • Lifelink

Even though this comes at a higher cost, with 3 to cast and 3 to equip, +3 is a pretty solid boost, especially since you gain life when you do damage.

Loxodon Warhammer remains a powerful yet versatile equipment in the Commander format. With access to mana rocks, this card is a great one to tack onto your favorite Creature.

Outside of Commander, though, six total mana is a bigger ask. Even so, turning a 1/1 into a 4/1 with Lifelink means every hit gains you four life while pushing real damage.

Additionally, granting the equipped Creature Trample provides an extra layer of security against an opponent's blockers. Even if they don't survive the combat, Trample pushes some amount of damage in most games, gaining you some life.

1. Batterskull

Last on our list today is none other than Batterskull.

Batterskull is a five-mana Equipment with Living Weapon, creating a 0/0 Germ that enters attached and immediately becomes a 4/4 thanks to the +4/+4 boost. It also gives Lifelink and Vigilance.

For three mana, you can return it to your hand at Instant speed, dodging most removal and setting it up to be played again and again.

Because Living Weapon triggers on entry, every time you recast it you get a fresh 4/4 body to carry it. That makes it resilient and self-sufficient, even without other Creatures in play.

The mana investment is real, but the payoff is immediate. Whether you're attacking with the Germ or suiting up a larger Creature, Batterskull turns any body into a Lifelinking, Vigilant threat. Equipping it to a 5/5, for example, lets you swing for nine while still holding that Creature back on defense.

It's powerful, flexible, and surprisingly hard to answer cleanly.

Conclusion

Lifelink Equipment is an effective and often overlooked way to swing the game in your favor. It helps stabilize your life totals whether you want to play offense or take a more conniving approach to the win.
