Top Ten Cards from March of the Machine for Casual Formats

Reddit

Hello happy March of the Machine fans! Ready for my first Top Ten around this awesome set with three Honorable Mentions? I got cha! This list only includes casual format spotlights like Commander, other Highlander formats, Type Four, Five Color and multiplayer. Ready?

Honorable Mention #1 (#13 Overall) - Omnath, Locus of All

Omnath, Locus of All

Let's kick things off with the only five color card in the set, the new Omnath! This is a 4/4 for five mana, all has to be played normally save for Black which is Phyrexian. It could easily be a 4-drop that costs 2 life. It's a Commander and five color, so it'll be very powerful since all Five Color Commanders have huge numbers of decks. When you would lose unspent mana, it becomes Black, much like the first Omnath that saved your Green mana. That's very strong with Black mana matters stuff like Drain Life.

Then at the beginning of your precombat main phase you look at the top card of your library and reveal if it cost three or more mana symbols. Make three mana equal its color identity and then draw it whether or not you could reveal it. That makes this a Howling Mine for just you. You can easily add in a bunch of three colored things (or more) to get the free ramp to cast them. See how you make the mana you need to cast it? That's very synergetic without giving you a broken free cast, and you can save the free mana as Black mana if not used, so that works with the first ability as well! Nice! It's going to dominate kitchen tables, but it's a bit hard to cast and you'll have to build around it.

Honorable Mention #2 (#12 Overall) - Inga and Esika

Inga and Esika

This is on curve and is legendary for Commander purposes in one of the most popular color combinations in that format. Your creatures gain vigilance, and note this includes them too. Then they can tap for mana of any color for casting creatures only. That's strong together since they can swing, and the tap for mana in the second main phase. Then when you spend three or more mana from creatures to cast creatures, you'll draw a card. So this creates a brand new archetype for Simic, creature mana matters. I think this'll be a big hit moving forward! I also like vigilance here with tappers for things outside of mana makers like Arcanis the Omnipotent. I also love this with dorks that tap for 2 or more mana or for dorks like Somberwald Sage and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds. Draw those cards!

Honorable Mention #3 (#11 Overall) - Render Inert

Render Inert

Render Inert is our token uncommon and first mono-Black card of three. It's the color with the most mono-colored cards. This three-cost sorcery will remove up to five counters from a target permanent of any sort. Then you draw a card so it's cantrip. This fun thing has a lot of flexibility at the multiplayer table. You can kill a planeswalker with 5 or fewer mana. If not, you can drop it off ultimate for 5 turns. You can also remove up to 5 +1/+1 counters from an opposing dork, or -1/-1 counters on yours. You can pull the counters off an opposing Vivid Land like Vivid Grove, or 5 off your Dark Depths, or 5 charge counters off your foe's Darksteel Reactor. It's very flexible at the multiplayer table since there are so many things to target!

#10. Wrenn and Realmbreaker

Wrenn and Realmbreaker

Our first planeswalker on the list is this cheap walker of the planes. It has four abilities. Its static is to let your lands tap for any color of mana. Nice! Great for Five Color right there. Its +1 will turn a land into a 3/3 dork with a host of keywords, haste, vigilance and hexproof. Good for the serving and blocking and it ends your next turn so it's a nice blocker for a round of turns or two to attack with. Then you can -2 to mill three and then put a milled permanent into your hand - card flow. It can do that twice with its starting loyalty. On a 3 drop? Nasty! And then it's ultimate costs 7 and your lands and permanents can be cast from your graveyard. That's very strong synergy with itself. See why this powerful thang made my first top ten? I hope so!

#9. Hoarding Broodlord

Hoarding Broodlord

One of my favorite Type Four cards is this 8-drop mono-Black Dragon with 7/6 size. Nasty! It convokes, so you can drop it way earlier in a going wide brew - pretty common in Black like Orzhov Tokens. Then you can search your library for a card, exile it, and cast it with this. All exile casts have convoke, like Red's exile from your library and cast or foretell. That's really strong as free spell enabler on a convoking card tutoring fool. Remember that Type Four is the format with infinite mana but just one spell per turn, so this is a one drop there. Love this thing power loads there and elsewhere!

#8. Chrome Host Seedshark

Chrome Host Seedshark

Izzet (and Jeskai) Spellslinger. It's the eighth most-played archetype over at EDHREC.com in the Commander format. Anytime I see a card that elevates that, I take note! Enter this three-drop on curve 2/4 with flying, since it's the casting cost of Wind Drake with a bigger butt. When you cast a nondork spell like instants or sorceries you'll incubate that spells mana value in counters. Then you can transform it into that sized dork for 2 mana, so if you cast Deep Analysis you'll make a 4/4 token, and then two more mana will make it a 4/4 dork permanently. It's very strong with all of your non-creatures casting. I love this in Azorius and Esper Artifacts, Spellslinger, Planeswalker heavy brews to make blockers and game winners, and loads more! Don't sleep on this flying Shark!

#7. Breach the Multiverse

Breach the Multiverse

If I didn't try to remove subjectivity from my lists, this would be my top #1 card since it's my personal favorite. 7-mana sorcery is a bit pricey, but the results are awesome! Plus, it's in the color of ramp like Cabal Coffers and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Everyone mills a decade of cards. You too! Then you put a planeswalker or creature from everyone's graveyard into play under your control! Nasty! That is just so strong! It's powerful in any multiplayer game where you could easily be getting 3 or 5 for one card. Even in a dual it's pretty strong too. It's also very strong in Type Four where you don't have to worry about the casting cost. This is my favorite card in the set, but it's not the most powerful, sorry. This is our highest charting mono-Black card.

#6. Faerie Mastermind

Faerie Mastermind

This is a flashable trick to trade with an attacking X/2 flyer, or to cast end of turn (EOT) and untap and attack with. It's very strong there. Then I love it with the ability to draw when your foe draws their second card each turn. Flash it out when your foe is about to draw that second card. Then you can really draw cards in multiplayer with all of the extra turns and things that people want to play like Brainstorm or Deep Analysis. Nasty stuff over them. Then you can activate it for 4 mana to have everyone draw a card, and then you a second card if your foe has already drawn one. I love this thing's power at the kitchen table powerfully. It's very strong there!

Ready for the Top Five? We have hitting one artifact, two planeswalkers, one creature and one sorcery, so a pretty spread out list of types.

#5. Sword of Once and Future

Sword of Once and Future

Let's knock off that artifact now and only have cards with colors left. This is a three drop, two to equip piece of equipment royalty. It's in one of the most powerful cycles ever printed in the entire game. This gives +2/+2, protection from Blue and Black which includes bounce like Cyclonic Rift, and destruction like Murder. It can swing through roughly 40% of defenses with protection from two colors.

Then when it smashes it nets you two triggers - the first is to surveil 2. Strong repeatable card selection over time and better than scry 2 since you can fill up your graveyard. Then you can cast one instant/sorcery from your graveyard with a cost of 2 or fewer for free, and it's exiled. Free casts, free cards, and more are all very strong and make this another powerhouse of the cycle. I like in way much in Commander with a ton of cheap instants and sorceries to cast aggressively like Impulse, Terminate, Rampant Growth, Lightning Bolt, Opt and Path to Exile.

#4. Archangel Elspeth

Archangel Elspeth

Our latest Elspeth is this one! Four mana for a nice four loyalty is on curve. Then you can +1 her and make a 1/1 Soldier with lifelink. Lifelink is great at getting a double life swing from your attacks. Then you can -2 her and toss a pair of +1/+1 counters on a target dork pumping it permanently, and it gets flying also permanently, and becomes an Angel. That's pretty strong. Doing that after her +1 will make a 3/3 flying, lifelinking Angel Soldier. You can do that twice with her starting loyalty. Don't sleep on her -6 ultimate to Zombify all 3 cost or less non-land permanents from your graveyard to your battlefield. That's very winning. Love her loads as a result!

#3. Drana and Linvala

Drana and Linvala

Our highest charting gold card is this Orzhov 4-drop 3/4 with flying and vigilance, very on-curve. Then your foe's activated abilities of creatures cannot be played. Nasty shut down of things, and note there is no "nonmana" clause here so Birds of Paradise are shut down just like Selesnya Guildmage. Then they have the activated abilities on your opponents' stuff, and with mana washing in effect It's a very strong ability, and creates an Orzhov Hate Bear archetype which was before Bant, Azorius, Mono-White or Selesnya. It's very strong at the kitchen table in shutting down activated abilities of opposing dorks while stealing them. Nicely done!

#2. Chandra, Hope's Beacon

Chandra, Hope's Beacon

Our final Red card, and planeswalker (and mythic) is this fun 6-mana planeswalker. Her static gives your first instant/sorcery cast each turn copied, with new targets if you want! A mana-free copy of everything from Rolling Thunder to Fact or Fiction to Krosan Grip or Vindicate. Very strong! Then you can +2 her to make a pair of mana in any combo of colors, so she's only a four-drop since she makes two back, and you could drop her, then +2 and cast a 2-cost instant or sorcery for your free copy.

She can also get a positive loyalty with +1 to exile 5 and cast an instant/sorcery from them this turn. Nice card flow, and it'll trigger her static. Then you can -X her and deal that damage to two targets. With a 7 potential loyalty on the first turn and two positive loyalty abilities, she can be hard to drop down and kill in the traditional way, but she lacks an ultimate to build up to.

What sorcery made my top spot?

#1. Sunfall

Sunfall

My top card from my first list is this fun sorcery! You exile all creatures. It's one more than Wrath for exiling instead of destruction, which is much better. It takes out indestructible things like Blightsteel Colossus and tricks like Heroic Intervention. Only phasing like Teferi's Protection commonly played will get around it.

That right there would be enough to make my top spot...but this adds more! You Incubate equal to the stuff answered in this way. If you exiled 5 dorks, Incubate 5. In multiplayer that could easily be 8 or 11. Then you can spend two to make a dork from it. So on a later turn your 5 Incubator is now a 5/5 dork with a cost of just two more mana. Nasty good at creating a win-con with the sweeping without costing you more mana up front! Also note that this gets better the more you are playing against, and it does count tokens for the Incubator token.

And there we go! What did you think of my top choices from this set? Join us next week for another look at the top ten from the set!
