Hello and happiest of days to each of you! A few weeks ago, I began a column looking at the best in class for various categories of ramp: my Top Mana Dorks, Land Acceleration creatures, Ramp Spells, and then Exploration effects, and then a general article on all things mana. I've even written an article on when to use Manaliths and Cultivates, all for casual and multiplayer.
Today we are moving to my Top Wild Growths!
Debuting back in Alpha way back when, there were three Green 1-drops that accelerated our mana. The two that most folks remember today are Birds of Paradise and Llanowar Elves, but there was also a 1-drop common Aura called Wild Growth, an Enchant land that let it produce an extra green mana. Mana creatures are easily killed, as were any Auras attached to them, but on enchanted lands are much safer!
So let's take a look!
Honorable Mentions
Glittering Frost AND Blighted Burgeoning - Both of these add a mana of any color when the enchanted land is tapped! And then they'll also add something to the game too. Glittering Frost makes the land Snow, which is great for Snow brews! And Blighted Burgeoning will incubate 2 which is also pretty good.
Wolfwillow Haven - This two-mana Wild Growth taps for green, so for any mono-green or mostly-green deck that's fine. But that's not all! It can also sac for a 2/2 Wolf.
Dawn's Reflection AND Market Festival - Next up are these four cost Auras that when the land is tapped for mana add two of any one color! That's great in tons of Green decks! Love it. Embrace it.
All Three-Cost Auras That do Something on Arrival and Tap for Two - Next up is this selection that have great enters triggers, from gaining three life to making a clue token, or venturing into the dungeon!
Overgrowth - Next is this cheap mana ramper at three that adds two green when the land is tapped for mana. Not bad, right?
Wild Growth AND Utopia Sprawl - You know Wild Growth, so let's turn to Utopia Sprawl. This costs one, can only enchant a Forest, chooses a color and then when the land is tapped it also taps for that color. It's a great option, but being limited to Forests and only one extra color is a little restricting.
Top 5
5. Trace of Abundance AND Fertile Ground
Next up are these two 2-drops that when the land is tapped for mana you can one of any color! Trace of Abundance is a little difficult to cast but does give the land shroud for extra protection. Fertile Ground doesn't give the land protection, but is does only cost one color to cast so it's easy to slide into decks.
4. Abundant Growth shoutout to Nylea's Presence
Next are these fun cantrip Auras. Abundant Growth lets your land tap for any color! Nylea's Presence gives the land all basic land types - a brilliant combo with Coalition Victory or domain. Embrace it.
3. Buried in the Garden
Next up is this 4-drop Selesnya colored Aura! When Buried in the Garden enters, it has an Oblivion Ring effect to temporarily take care of something, and then when our land is tapped it adds one of any color!
2. Bigger on the Inside
Next up is this fun, flavor-forward 5-drop Gruul uncommon. Bigger on the Inside can also enchant an artifact, then it taps to give target player two mana of one color and the next spell they cast this turn has cascade. That's very powerful, right?
1. Elvish Guidance
But this fun land enchantment must be at the top of the list, right? Just like Priest of Titania was my top Mana Dork (along with Circle of Dreams Druid),this 3-drop takes the cake. When you tap the enchanted land for that sweet mana you get one extra green for each Elf on the battlefield! Note that counts your opponents' elves too, just like Priest. I know. It can make you more mana than a Gaea's Cradle! Yup, nasty indeed.
I hope you enjoyed this fun dive into all things Wild Growth. The well is pretty deep and we could also toss in Urban Utopia or Nature's Embrace! But what would your Top 5 be?
