Oathbreaker Dinos

Reddit

Ikoria is a plane echoing with the roar of dinosaurs. And I'm not talking about feathered beauties like the ones from Ixalan, nor only the magnificent creatures worthy for display in Jurassic Park. No, these take us to the next level of monster movie.

Zilortha, Strength Incarnate

What better way to spend the day than devouring your friends with Godzilla? Ram Through any puny Questing Beast that gets in your way, and Decimate kingdoms with Godzilla's atomic breath. In the new casual format of Oathbreaker, you can do all that and more. Play with a 58-card deck more full of dinosaurs than a velociraptor paddock, plus two more threats in your command zone: a planeswalker and their signature spell. You can cast the instant or sorcery as long as your planeswalker is on the battlefield, each card taxed two more each time per usual. As far as the planeswalker to lead your dinosaurs, let's leave the choice to Godzilla.

Domri, Anarch of Bolas

Godzilla is the type of savage being Domri dreamed of. The boy grew up believing in the Raze Boar, which would return to turn Ravnica into a confetti of boulders. Imagine Godzilla toppling all those stone towers with a sweep of his plated tail. Just thinking of it would make Domri whoop in glee and start singing Rhythm of the Wild. Domri would have loved dinosaurs, and no doubt when a young member of the Gruul Clans asks their mama shaman what happened to Domri in War of the Spark, she would tell her child that Domri has gone on to greener pastures: ones shaking from the stomping strides of dinosaurs.

Domri and dinosaurs go together like reckless capitalism and the Jurassic Park franchise. This isn't even the first time I've built a triple-d (Domri-dino deck). At the end of that article I featured a bonus list with your typical fanged threats, including Etali, Primal Storm, along with the combo of Forerunner of the Empire into Polyraptor. This time returning to the Jurassic Park island of Isla Nublar, we're letting trample synergies lead the way. And I'm not only talking about our signature spell of Ram Through.

Quartzwood Crasher

Both these Ikoria cards give dinosaurs a new reason to stampede. Our deck is full of tramplers, even reaching for some lesser-played ones (but wonderfully named) like Thrash of Raptors. Yes, there are more powerful dinos, alone, but backed up by Quartzwood Crasher, we will quickly be able to make other players flee for their lives like extras in monster movies.

It is true that Quartzwood Crasher will fail to give a bonus when attacking opposing planeswalkers, which happens about half the time in Oathbreaker. I don't typically include cards like Quartzwood Crasher, but given its power level I made an exception. Neither can Ram Through damage planeswalkers; for that you would want the more commonly played Domri's Ambush. I chose Ram Through for a different reason. The instant-speed nature of the card gives you more political power. Opponents will be afraid to attack you if you can respond by head-butting their lovely creature and trampling over them too. Ram Through is an aggressive card, similar to Temur Battle Rage in how quickly it can end games.

I kept the deck mainly on theme for monster movies, with Domri as the protagonist who is pro-mayhem. If you feel it's in keeping you can include Sakura-Tribe Elder, which would be stronger in the deck than Thunderherd Migration. As another accelerant creature, I included the Gruul Dark Ritual: Tinder Wall.

I also wanted the deck to be more or less budget. If that's not a concern, you may consider Urza's Incubator and Cavern of Souls. The anti-counterspell aspect of the land isn't much needed, between Domri, Anarch of Bolas and Rhythm of the Wild. That's also the reason I did not auto-include Carnage Tyrant, even though I named that card.

Our general strategy is to play one or two dinosaurs and devour the strongest adversary. Committing too much to the battlefield will make us vulnerable to an Extinction Event. If you fear a Star of Extinction is on the horizon, sit back in Bonders' Enclave and take it easy. Recover card advantage with your multiple Domri's, Regal Behemoth, and, of course, Ripjaw Raptor.

I considered Pyroclasm to trigger enrage and sweep away small creatures. When I realized it wouldn't kill Drannith Magistrate, I lost interest. In Oathbreaker, you always want to be able to answer that blasted Wizard, along with other problem non-creature permanents like Moat. Lightning Bolt is strong in this format too, as it can kill most creatures and many planeswalkers too, as surely as falling against a fence electrified with 10,000 volts.

Clearly, some dinos are stronger than others. If Domri had his druthers, he would always want to curve Marauding Raptor into Gruul Godzilla. To increase that likelihood, you could play Worldly Tutor. I've chosen the less expensive Commune with Dinosaurs, Forerunner of the Empire, and the more powerful Once Upon A Time. Ah, yes, I can see Domri telling the baby raptors their favorite bedtime story.

"Once Upon a Time there was a hungry hungry dino...."

One wonderful tale Domri would believe in would be cycling Titanoth Rex to give Taurean Mauler trample. He would also howl in excitement should you be able to ramp out a turn three Zilortha, Strength Incarnate.

Domri could well relate to the bonders on Ikoria, outcasts of civilization who feel a near-spiritual connection with beasts. He would love to lead them, prying opening the settlement doors with a splendid splitting sound. A symphony of crashing would resound within the city's walls, until the last of them fell down. It would be no trouble at all, especially with Godzilla at his side.
