This weekend was Eternal Weekend - one of the biggest celebrations of formats like Legacy and Vintage on the Magic calendar. As a consequence, we got to see a spectacular display of what’s new in Magic’s most expansive formats. Given that Kaladesh is a set based around artifacts, you’d better believe it’s got some spectacular additions to a format that thrives on awesome artifact synergies. Perhaps the best example of this is a new variant on Mishra's Workshops that adds some of the awesome vehicles from Kaladesh. Let’s take a look at Car Shops:

At its core, this is just another Mishra's Workshop deck. The goal is to use Sphere of Resistance and Thorn of Amethyst combined with Strip Mine and Wasteland to stop your opponent from doing Vintage-y things. These decks are brutally efficient when they’re on the play, and are more than capable of ending games without allowing opposing Blue decks to even cast a spell.

Kaladesh brings a number of exciting additions to this style of deck. In particular, Inventors' Fair is an awesome singleton, particularly since may of these decks already play some number of Crucible of Worlds to go with Strip Mine and Wasteland. This can give you the ability to tutor up additional copies of Lodestone Golem, Phyrexian Metamorph, and other Sphere of Resistance effects to make sure that your opponent can’t stitch together enough mana to make relevant plays.

The other big pickups for this deck are Fleetwheel Cruiser and Skysovereign, Consul Flagship. Fleetwheel Cruiser fills the same kind of slot that Juggernaut and Slash Panther have before: hasty threats that pressure Blue decks, snipe Planeswalkers, and steal games out from under combo decks that think they have another turn. The additional power over Slash panther is a big deal here. The pseudo-resiliency to sweepers isn’t necessarily a huge deal, but it does mitigate the effect of some cards like Supreme Verdict out of sideboards. Skysovereign, Consul Flagship on the other hand, is a fantastic way to pressure opposing Planeswalkers. Suddenly cards like Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Dack Fayden aren’t safe, even with Monastery Mentor, Young Pyromancer, and friends to protect them. Instead, you can just use Mishra's Factory to crew up your vehicles and crush Planeswalkers while racing your opponent’s tokens in the sky.

All in all, this is an interesting development to the Mishra's Workshop archetype, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see people being killed by the combination of Fleetwheel Cruiser and Arcbound Ravager for many years to come.
