It Lurks in the Shadows

Reddit

For several months now, Death's Shadow has been a premier strategy in Modern, as it is an efficient threat that scales with the game and punishes your opponent for trying to kill you. However, it wasn’t until the recent Legacy Grand Prix that we saw Death's Shadow begin to make a transition to Legacy. Josh Utter-Leyton put up a great performance at the event with a Grixis build. Noll3n has taken this a step further and started to explore Sultai. Let’s take a look:

Berserk
This is a deck that knows exactly what it’s trying to do. There’s no frills or tricks. You’re trying to lower your life total as quickly as possible while netting information with Gitaxian Probe and churning through your deck to find Death's Shadow and Tarmogoyf. Both creatures will be absolutely enormous, given your propensity at dealing damage to yourself and your ability to stock your graveyard with Mishra's Baubles and Street Wraiths as well as cantrips and interactive instants.

This deck thrives on efficiency. Where delver decks lean on a one-mana 3/2, you get to utilize a one-mana 9/9 that punishes them for trying to kill you. All your cards cost very little, which means you can cast more of them and overwhelm your opponent with raw power and quantity of spells. A big part of that is the inclusion of Deathrite Shaman, which means you can operate on even fewer lands than your opponent. Deathrite also gives you the ability to steal games with just one or two hits from your oversized beaters and to modulate your life total almost at will.

Perhaps the most important inclusion is the card Berserk, which is functionally a one-mana Temur Battle Rage in this deck. It’s a card that lets you steal games out of nowhere, particularly when you are as well-equipped to fight over it as this deck is.

If you’re looking to play tight games that reward careful management of your life total while letting you play all the most efficient threats and interaction, this is the deck for you.
