So It Begins... Check Out our First Look at The Hobbit

MagicCon Amsterdam is in full swing this weekend so, Saturday was another day of gaming fun.

One of the most exciting parts of the con are the Preview Panels. We usually get two, where we get to see some cards and hear some details about upcoming releases. This was a weekend to remember as we ended up getting three in total.

This last one was focused on the debut for The Hobbit.

This upcoming Magic: The Gathering release focuses on Bilbo Baggins and his journey there and back again. Fans will love how Wizards translated this classic story into the game we love.

Brand New Cards

Today's preview kicked off with some brand new cards.

Unsurprisingly, the first reveal was that of The Lonely Mountain. This is where Bilbo and the company of Thorin Oakenshield tried to steal the treasures back from the dragon, Smaug.

The Lonely Mountain is a great representation of the home of the Dwarves. They're known for their craftsmanship and the treasures within attract many from throughout Middle-earth.

We also saw a bunch of Legendary Creatures. There were a lot of familiar faces for fans of the world like Thorin Oakenshield, Gandalf, Goblin's Bane; and Bifur, Melodic Rider. Each of these is a member of the company of Dwarves that join Bilbo on the journey to the Lonely Mountain.

The Adventure mechanic returns for Gandalf but, both Thorin and Bifur have an all-new mechanic: Storied

The Storied mechanic cares about if you have three or more Artifacts, Legendaries, and/or Sagas (historic cards). Once you meet this requirement, you gain an enduring story for the rest of the game.

Fans of the Ascend mechanic from Rivals of Ixalan may recognize this one. An enduring story acts similar to the City's Blessing. As long as you have it, cards with the Storied mechanic will typically grant you an additional effect.

We also see some Sagas to go along with this mechanic. Every Saga in The Hobbit has been confirmed to represent a song from within the story. The first of these - Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern - depicts the Wargs chasing after the company and cornering them against a tree.

Other key characters in the story also make an appearance.

Thranduil, the Elvenking provides you with a new way to build your next Elf Commander deck. He takes advantage of all your dead Elves' abilities - perfect as they're prone to dying to most removal spells. Even better, the more Legendary Elves you put into your deck, the more cards you'll get to draw.

We also get to see Bard, King of Dale and his wife, The Queen of Dale. These two represent the finale, where Bard slays Smaug with a black arrow at Lake-town and becomes the first king of Dale.

The Queen of Dale also comes with a new ability, Recruit. This is a variation of Connive, offering you the chance to draw a card and create a 1/1 Human Soldier instead of dishing out counters.

We get a lot of incredible looks into the world of The Hobbit with these cards, too.

For example, the Elves play a sizable role in the story, which makes Silvan Reveler an excellent inclusion. This card lets you loot - or draw and discard - and makes it beneficial for you to discard a Land. Even better, when it inevitably dies, you can get it back by playing a Land and paying its cost to bring it back and do it all over again.

You'll also find The Chief Warg and Bolg of the North to represent some of the adversaries the company faces along the way. Bolg is noteworthy because he brings back the Amass mechanic. This time, as is fitting of the story, you'll get to Amass Goblins instead of Orcs.

Other major story elements can be found on cards like The Eagles Are Coming! and Sting, Bilbo's Sword.

The Eagles come to the party's aid multiple times on their journey; Sting becomes is key weapon throughout not only The Hobbit but it also passed to Frodo in The Lord of the Rings.

Sting, Bilbo's Sword highlights yet another mechanic: Hone Counters. Various Equipment cards will feature these counters, and each counter gives the equipped Creature +1/+0. The more counters you can accumulate, the bigger your threats will be.

Some other great examples are Supper for Spiders, Desolation of Smaug, and Gollum, Riddle Master. Each one of these marks a particular moment in the story.

For example, Supper with Spiders depicts a moment where the company is besieged by a group of giant black spiders who try to devour the group. Gollum, Riddle Master depicts the moment where Bilbo challenges Gollum to a contest of riddles in exchange for an aid to his escape. And, of course, Desolation of Smaug depicts the moment where Smaug leaves the Lonely Mountain and attacks the nearby Lake-town.

We also get some beautiful variants for each of these new cards.

Sweet Variant Treatments

Two main variants take center stage for The Hobbit: the Dragon Hoard and Book Cover frames.

The Dragon Hoard frame border is reminiscent of a dragon's hide. The name and card text each read as though they're from some ancient scroll, lending to the rich feeling of the world of Middle-earth.

While the Dragon Hoard frame celebrates the story's world, the other major variant - the Book Frame - takes inspiration from our world. Each of these borderless variants are designed to look like a well-worn book.

It's a familiar sight that looks the way many people might've first read The Hobbit as a hand-me-down or from the local library.

Surge Foils have become a staple of Universes Beyond releases. They're back in The Hobbit and this time, both Dragon Hoard and Book Cover frames can be found in Collector Boosters. If you're looking to bling out your deck, these are some of the coolest ways to do so.

In addition to these variants, we will also get some more scene cards. While we've yet to see the full scope of these sequences, there will be at least two 6-card scene depictions in this set. One depicts The Battle of the Five Armies from the book's end while the other focuses on the party's battle with the Great Goblin.

Finally, the ever-present Extended Art Frames are also here. Traditionally, this design can only be found on cards that don't have any other kinds of variants in the set.

Dwarvish Language Reprints

A handful of reprints appear as part of The Hobbit with a special new treatment: Dwarvish Language.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth featured a small handful of super rare cards in Elvish. This time, Wizards has changed things up to better represent the dwarves in Thorin's company.

Dwarven Warriors, The Reaver Cleaver, and Treasure Vault can only be found in Collector Boosters.

It you're lucky, you might come across the new Mox Amber poking out of your Boosters.

There are only five cards total, with Arcane Signet being the last, but the Mox is easily the crown jewel here.

Classic Artist Box Toppers

The Hobbit also contains a special sub-set of Classic Artist box toppers included in every Play Booster and Collector Booster Box.

Each of these cards will be a sweet reprint from the original The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth release.

The illustrations were done by classic Magic: The Gathering artists, like Rebecca Guay, Ron Spencer, Jeff Miracola, and Mark Poole.

Players get a fresh chance to score massive playables like Galadriel's Dismissal, Orcish Bowmasters, and Flame of Anor in a super fancy variant this go round, too: Special Surge Foil versions of these cards will be sold in Collector Boosters.

Scene Boxes

The Debut Panel was capped at both ends with reveals of two Scene Boxes.

The first of these is the Crack the Plates Scene Box. This depicts the moment Gandalf arrives with Thorin's Company to contract Bilbo into joining them.

You'll find many beloved characters getting cards as Legendary Creatures to benefit your favorite Commander deck. You'll also get a copy of Bag End Banquet, a mana rock that gives you lots of mana depending on the amount of Food you have.

The other Scene Box - Treasures of Smaug - is a near polar opposite.

Not only is it the end of the journey, but you'll only find one Legendary Creature here: Smaug the Impenetrable himself. The remaining cards are centered around the setting and the moment, with multiple spells, Artifacts, and one sweet Land. If you're a fan of Treasure, this is certainly one you should pick up.

Conclusion

This was the last run of Preview Panels out of MagicCon Amsterdam. It's been an exciting week full of awesome cards being shown off to the backdrop of one of the coolest events of the year.

But, the excitement doesn't stop there! Even though the Con is winding down, this is just the start of The Hobbit previews. We should be getting extra info almost nonstop as we head towards release day.

This set officially releases on August 14th with Prereleases starting on August 7th. Orders start shipping when Prerelease begins, so lock them in now to get your cards before anyone else.
