Magic: The Gathering's next Universes Beyond set, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is skateboarding over the horizon and I can hear the distant exclamations of "Cowabunga, dude!" getting closer and closer as the days go by. Whether you're an OG fan of these Adolescent Monster Shinobi Terrapins or not, we do have some exciting previews for the upcoming set I'm excited to talk about!
Previews in a Half Shell
This is by no means a complete list of all the previews I'm interested in exploring. I'm excited about so many cards from this set it would be difficult to cover them all in one article. This list isn't structured in any particular order, these are just the first cards that jumped out to me. I might even write a part two for this list in the near future!
Without further ado, let's drop in to the half pipe and shred through some exciting new cards from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Kitsune's Technique
The first part of Kitsune's Technique that jumps out to me is the sneak cost of ![]()
. Being able to mill half of an opponent's library for a cost that low is huge. This card also has the advantage of being in Blue, as many decks that actively want to mill are at least partly in Blue. I imagine Kitsune's Technique would slot right in alongside Blue's Mill mainstays, like Final Fantasy's The Water Crystal, Traumatize, and Edge of Eternities' Singularity Rupture.
What I like most about Kitsune's Technique it is its versatility. If you struggle to get a creature to deal combat damage to one of your opponents, in a dire situation you could hard cast it. The raw mana value is a hefty cost, but in a Bruvac the Grandiloquent Commander deck that's six mana to fully eliminate a player from the game. Great card!
The Cloning of Shredder
I can hardly describe how excited I am by The Cloning of Shredder! I initially thought it felt like a Blue card, with the nonlegenedary copy text, but it exiles and copies a creature from your graveyard, so it makes a little more sense as a Black card. I love this kind of support in Black, as you're rarely able to make that many copies of a singular creature in Black-based decks.
I should note The Cloning of Shredder doesn't care if any of the copies it creates are removed. As long as the first chapter ability resolves, you've getting a copy for the next two turns as well (unless someone somehow removes the creature from exile)!
The mana cost isn't anything to sneeze at, as ![]()
![]()
is a big commitment. But trust me when I say this card will be totally worth the cost of admission. Being able to make a copy of a Sheoldred, the Apocalypse could be back breaking, or any Sheoldred for that matter. I'm excited to see what shenanigans players get up to with this card!
Rat King, Verminister
It's another rat Commander! Congratulations to all the decks seeking to run infinite copies of Relentless Rats and Rat Colony.
Rat King, Verminister is a great addition to other rat Commander decks. A Totentanz, Swarm Piper would love the additional 1/1 rats this Rat King provides. Marrow-Gnawer would love more ways to cheat more rats into play for "free."
Wick, the Whorled Mind would love the access to more rats entering to grow the big baby snail. Vren, the Relentless would salivate at the thought of buffing its rat tokens by all the additional token creation.
Rat King, Verminister is a massive addition to those decks, but that's not to say it can't stand on its own as a Rat Commander in its own right.
Broadcast Takeover
This is going to sound like so much cope, but Broadcast Takeover might be another answer to Smothering Tithe players and decks that horde treasures, like Prosper, Tome-Bound.
Of course, many players will sacrifice all of their Treasures in response to you casting this to make sure you don't have access to all that mana. However, you're also forcing them to crack open all their Treasure tokens at an inopportune time, potentially wasting all that stored mana.
Mana Rocks aren't nearly as disposable, though, and you'll likely grab a good number of Sol Rings and Signets to recoup the cost of casting Broadcast Takeover and then some. Your opponents Artifact Creatures are yours for the taking. And think of all the Clue and Food Tokens you could take! For five mana you get access to all of that.
Broadcast Takeover is reactionary, but it could be such a blow out! It would be an all-star in a Vazi, Keen Negotiator deck now that I think about it. I know this would be a blow out against my Tivit, Seller of Secrets deck.
Five mana is a little pricey, but taking all your opponents' artifacts for a turn is an insidious effect. It might be slightly situational, but I really think it could change the game. I don't know how versatile this card will be considering it has three Red pips in its mana value. It might be limited to two-color decks running Red or Mono-Red decks.
Madame Null, Power Broker and Raphael, the Nightwatcher
I know, I know. Madame Null, Power Broker makes three Black cards on this list, but I'm really excited for Black's prospects in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Both Madame Null, Power Broker and Raphael, the Nightwatcher have me salivating at the thought of slotting them into my Dihada, Binder of Wills deck.
Both cards are Legendary Creatures that her -3 can put into my hand. Dihada is a reanimator deck with a Legendary matters theme. It relies heavily on combat. Being able to pay some life to make your creatures bigger is hugely important, so Madame Null is massive addition to the deck. Additionally, Raphael, the Nightwatcher giving my attacking creatures double strike could be a game ender.
Both of these cards can be cast with the four treasures you get from Dihada's -3 ability, and If I cast them early, they are excellent blockers for her.
Wrapping Up
I didn't except to find so many exciting cards in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set. In fact, there are so many interesting cards I'll likely put out another piece to cover more of them as new previews come out. There are plenty of other cards that are cool as heck, but these are my absolute favorites. Did I miss something huge? Let me know! I'm @Strixhavendropout on everything.
