A Look at the Quandrix Unlimited Commander Deck

Reddit

On April 1st, 2026, the Secrets of Strixhaven preconstructed Commander decks were previewed. Polygon previewed the Quandrix Unlimited deck, with Zimone as the face Commander. Primo, the Unbounded is the secondary Commander. Zimone, Infinite Analyst and Primo's strategy both surround +1/+1 counters and x spells.

There are a decent number of reprints in terms of power and value. Let's look at this deck's strategy and what cool new tech is under the hood.

Zimone, Infinite Analyst

Zimone, Infinite Analyst

Zimone is absolutely a cost reducer for you x spells, but don't be fooled. You will need to cast some of those spells off of your own mana to get her big enough to discount spells significantly. Each of her abilities only triggers off the first x spell you cast each turn. It is each turn, however, so instant speed x spells cast on your opponents' turns matter.

Putting counters on Zimone and ramping are the two best things you can do in the deck to get the most value out of her abilities. Well, that and drawing cards and casting X spells on your opponents' turns. And being able to do all this without the benefit of Zimone's discount will also be important.

Ramping With X and +1/+1 Counters

Animist's Awakening
Open the Way
Unbound Flourishing

More than anything else, you're going to want to ramp your mana base hard in a Zimone deck. Massive x spells are extremely mana intensive to cast, so your primary game plan is going to revolve around building your mana base up to cast those big spells.

Your initial x spells are going to be primarily focused on getting +1/+1 counters on Zimone. You want to save a lot of your best x spells for after you've buffed Zimone's power to make the value of x be as large as possible for the heavy hitters.

Something like Animist's Awakening is a clever way to ramp early in this deck while increasing the discount Zimone provides your subsequent x spells. It looks through the top x cards of your Library for lands. If you're lucky, you might find yourself up several lands.

Open the Way is similar, letting you slap up to four lands into play (you've got four players in a game of Commander, so it should often be four if cast early enough). With the extra lands and +1/+1 counters on Zimone, you'll be well set up to get your deck's engine running.

Unbound Flourishing is extremely well-suited for Zimone, Infinite Analyst. Every Open the Way and Animist's Awakening gets double the value of X and you get a copy of it. All the x spell Creatures will come out twice as big for less mana. That's kind of like ramp.

Kami of Whispered Hopes
Brass Infiniscope
Elementalist's Palette

Kami of Whispered Hopes is great with cards like Grove's Bounty and Forgotten Ancient that put counters on your Creatures. Increasing its power and the amount of extra mana it taps for is perfect for this deck. It also adds an additional +1/+1 counter on Zimone each time she gets counters, racking up that discount on your next X spell more and more.

Brass Infiniscope, a new card, is fundamentally a Hedron Archive, but when you cast your next x spell, it also gains you half x life and draws a card. It's basically the perfect new mana rock for Zimone. Elementalist's Palette is another x spell mana rock, but this one builds up over time whenever you cast an x spell. Late game, it could be game ending depending on the spell you cast with all that mana.

+1/+1 Creature Staples

Benevolent Hydra

Benevolent Hydra is great in a +1/+1 Counters deck as another engine for putting Counters on your Creatures. It enters with x +1/+1 Counters and can move those counters to other Creatures. That's great early on because it helps get some extra counters on Zimone, and late game it can enter as a massive threat with Zimone's discount.

Forgotten Ancient

Forgotten Ancient is great in any deck, but is especially great in Zimone alongside cards like Benevolent Hydra and Kami of Whispered Hopes. It triggers any counter doubling triggers and +1 Counter effects like Hardened Scales. Forgotten Ancient gets big quickly because it triggers off every spell opponents cast. It can then move those counters onto Zimone, making your X spells even bigger.

Primordial Hydra

Primordial Hydra is one of our big bruisers. It's the sort of Creature you want to pay a decent amount into because if it has Trample it's far more useful. Big Creatures not having evasion is on of the biggest weaknesses of Creature decks. You won't have the problem with Primordial Hydra in Zimone.

Stonecoil Serpent

Stonecoil Serpent is another big damage dealer with Trample and protection from Multicolored. Like Primordial Hydra, it'll be huge and easily Trample over for damage.

Card Draw in X Spells

Card draw is critical to sequencing your turns effectively. You can't just slam any Hydra you want on just any turn in this deck. If you can sequence effectively, you can eke out more value with your x spells. Having access to more cards helps you plan better.

Commander's Insight

Commander's Insight is good because you'll get the more cards from Zimone's ability, and you'll get even more cards depending on how much heat Zimone gets throughout the game. If she's been removed a few times, you'll get a nice chunk of extra cards. Three Blue pips in the cost is tough, but it shouldn't be a big issue in a two-color deck.

Hydroid Krasis
Lifeblood Hydra

Hydroid Krasis draws you cards and gains you life. It's another threat that gets a big boost from Zimone, making a Flying Trampler with X +1/+1 counters on it. It also has a cast trigger, so you'll get the cards and life even if it gets countered. Great card.

Lifeblood Hydra is similar in that it gives you a good body with Trample, that gains you life and draws you cards. The difference is that you only get the life and cards when when it dies. It's also has three Green pips in it's cost, which is a little steep but not too unreasonable.

Pull from Tomorrow
Stroke of Genius

Pull from Tomorrow is a bog-standard x-cost card draw spell. It only requires you to discard one card when you resolve it, so the higher x is, the better it is for you. Stroke of Genius costs x2u, so it's a little more expensive. It also targets, so it can be Redirected. Be careful.

New Cards For Quandrix Unlimited

There are 12 new cards being introduced in Quandrix Unlimited. Each one benefits both commanders. If you decide to play Primo, the Unbounded over Zimone, the deck should still run well for you. These cards either care about x spells or +1/+1 counters, and most of them are creatures.

New Creatures

Primo, the Unbounded

Primo, the Unbounded is the secondary commander for the deck. This card is neat for decks that have x spell creatures that enter with counters on them, because their base power is usually zero. So, this is a cool way to go wide with tokens when your "tall" x-cost Creatures get in for damage.

Much like any big Creature, Primo having Trample is great since it's more likely to trigger its own ability. The casting cost is rough, though. Also, five mana for a 2/2 isn't ideal. It's much better in the 99 under Zimone's leadership.

Owlin Spiralmancer

Owlin Spiralmancer is a crazy new card! I think we're going to see this in many upgraded Zimone decks and even Magus Lucea Kane decks. Being able to copy an x spell every turn is game-warping. That's especially true when Zimone discounts the cost of every first x spell each turn. Think of all the free value.

Kinetic Ooze

Kinetic Ooze reminds me of the Ravenous mechanic. Being able to draw a card if x is five or more, and doubling counters if x is 10 or more is huge for any x-spell deck. It's also a creature that just destroys an artifact or enchantment. It's Chomping Changeling for x-spell decks.

Nev, the Practical Dean

Nev, the Practical Dean is important to this deck because it gives all your creatures with counters on them Trample, including Zimone and itself. It also makes itself bigger with each x spell you cast. It's definitely a staple for the deck.

Yavimaya Bloomsage

Yavimaya Bloomsage is interesting because you can't prepare it and use the prepared spell the same turn unless you give it Flash. If someone destroys the creature, you can't cast the spell. If you do manage to keep it until your next turn, for enough life you can increase your wildly increase mana production. Save this for big x Spell turns with Zimone.

Striding Shotcaller

Striding Shotcaller is like Yavimaya Bloomsage in that you likely can't take full advantage of it the same turn you Prepare it. Preparing it requires you to do damage, and Run the Play gives your creatures counters and Flying until end of turn. Once you've Prepared it, it's likely you'll be able to keep Preparing it, which makes it a reasonable finisher with Zimone in play.

Non-Creature New Cards

Expansion Algorithm

Expansion Algorithm is a cool way to suddenly increase the number of counters on all your creatures. If Zimone is already packed with counters, things will only get more absurd from there. If she doesn't have very many counters, then at least it'll help Zimone out for the X-Spell you cast on your next turn. It's part game ender, and part set up depending on where you are in the game.

Nexus Mentality

Nexus Mentality is simply incredible. Drawing a card for every counter on a Hydra is wild work. It's a great way to refill your hand after executing the deck's gameplan. Being able to move all the counters onto Zimone for the next x-Spell is a also powerful potential play. Not to mention, you get both options when you control your Commander.

Lattice Library

Lattice Library is a good way to create blockers early on the game or big creatures later on. It's something you can do to set up your board as you build up enough mana to start casting your other x-Spells. The Fractals make for a decent army to block with while you take your time to ramp. But, I'm not sure how good this actually is in this deck.

Turbulent Wilderness

The Turbulent cycle of lands is interesting. If everyone is ramping appropriately and hitting their land drops, it might be playable? If you're last in turn order this could come out untapped on turn two at the earliest if two players before you used a two-mana ramp spell.

It's more likely to come into play tapped until like turn three or four. It's not bad, but not exactly great either.

Conclusion

Sifting through the other previewed Secrets of Strixhaven Commander Precons, it is evident that the power level has risen. The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Edge of Eternities also had some strong Commander precons, so it feels like this is a trend.

The Quandrix Unlimited precon looks like it will hit hard. Do not underestimate what it can do. It has evasion, ramp, and card draw. All it's missing is a few Heroic Intervention type of effects and it's off to the races. I did peep a Silkguard, though.
