The Cutest MTG Cards from Bloomburrow

Reddit

The Magic universe is immensely vast and diverse. In what other games can one player battle with a field of Vampires, Dragons, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while another player amasses an army of Squirrels, Raccoons, and Unicorns? Because of the breadth this game covers, there truly is something for everyone.

In August 2024, Wizards of the Coast released Bloomburrow, enthralling enthusiasts of adorable, tiny anthropomorphized Creatures. With this set, you and your critter-loving friends can finally decide who would win: an army of Rabbits, Squirrels, Raccoons, Mice, Frogs, Birds, Otters, Rats, Bats, or Lizards.

Perhaps you don't even care about such a fight. With Bloomburrow, there was only one fight worth winning for some players. I'm talking about the debate for the cutest MTG card in the set.

Cutest Contenders

Let's start at the top with a look at a handful of the most adorable cards in this set. First and foremost, I must begin with the Rabbits. There are many irresistibly cute Bloomburrow cards depicting bunny rabbits.

Intrepid Rabbit
Short Bow

If a troop of Rabbits gathered once a week to learn about camping trips, first aid, and being a good citizen, Intrepid Rabbit would be the scout leader of such a troop. This little critter is adorable with its makeshift weapon, lantern, and scout costume. The hat being made of a leaf is the cuteness cherry on top.

Short Bow is another favorite of mine simply because the Rabbit depicted looks absolutely adorable with its pine cone arrow and little quiver on its back.

Speaking of adorable pine cone arrows, have you seen the art for Finneas, Ace Archer? He's the punchline to the riddle, "What do you get when you cross a bunny with Robin Hood?"

I love how he holds the arrow is in his mouth as he's preparing to knock it. However, the cuteness on this card hits an 11 when you look at Finneas' adorable outfit and floppy, asymmetrical ears. I love what Victor Adame Minguez did with this Legendary Creature.

Other Creature types in Bloomburrow also have worthwhile cuteness contenders. The Mice and Otters of the set especially stand out.

Mouse Trapper
Coruscation Mage

Any Mouse Soldier or Otter Wizard is sure to be endearing. Mouse Trapper and Coruscation Mage are no exception. The Mouse is depicted throwing a bulbous tri-cornered weapon of sorts. It makes me wonder how the Creature, which likely weighs less than two pounds, can be a 3/2. That's the same stat line as, say, Frenzied Baloth. This must be one formidable Mouse!

Coruscation Mage's cuteness primarily stems from one feature in the art: its monocle. How adorable is that feature? I also love how it is peering delightedly into the glowing orb in its hands.

Then there is one of Magic's perennial typal theme favorite, Squirrels. Bloomburrow was hardly the first set to Include the Creature type, as these date back decades. Still, the set delivers on some absolutely adorable artworks for squirrel lovers. My favorite is Curious Forager, with its magical staff and cute druid outfit.

Cuteness Surprises

What I especially love about this set is that it's not just the traditionally adorable rodents that monopolize the card cuteness. Even Creatures that lack the "cute factor" in real life are still depicted in the cuddliest of ways in Bloomburrow. Consider, for example, Hearthborn Battler, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, and Pond Prophet.

Hearthborn Battler
Zoraline, Cosmos Caller
Pond Prophet

While there are likely plenty of players who adore Lizards, Bats, and/or Frogs, my inclination is to assume that these critters would be less adorable when compared to Rabbits and Squirrels. Perhaps because of this stereotypical assumption, Bloomburrow delivers on cuteness across every Creature type in the set.

Hearthborn Battler looks ready for combat, and I especially appreciate its kneepads. Zoraline, Cosmos Caller looks a bit formidable at first glance, but when you zoom into the bat cleric's art, it has a bit of charm to it. The fact that Pond Prophet is using magic to scry the future in a water droplet / crystal ball is a really cute touch to the card's art. Each of these are excellent testaments to how anthropomorphized critters can be cute regardless of the species.

Two Heads Cuter Than One

If a single anthropomorphized critter depicted on a Bloomburrow card is cute, then combining multiple species on the same card, shown working together, is downright delightful. Bloomburrow delivers on several charmingly attractive pieces of art showcasing two Creatures working together - this is the cycle of Duo cards.

Brave-Kin Duo
Lightshell Duo

In White, we have Brave-Kin Duo. This Creature card reflects a partnership between a Rabbit and a Mouse. I love how they're both depicted as hiking across a log through the woods, almost like they're on a camping adventure.

Lightshell Duo is the rat and otter combination, and both are gazing happily at a magical orb. I can't get over how happy they look, and the fact that they're standing cheek-to-cheek brings the cuteness factor to eleven.

It's not just the adorable rodents that team up with each other. The other critters also enter the mix, giving us some of the cuddliest artworks in Bloomburrow. Kindlespark Duo, for example, teams up a Lizard and an Otter. The two Creatures are depicted working together to cast a fire and lightning spell.

Even the amphibians get in on the action with Treeguard Duo. It showcases a Frog teaming up with a Rabbit to defend the forest village.

These two critters are looking formidable with their battle-ready poses and improvised weapons. I see right through those menacing glares, though. Underneath are a Frog and a Rabbit dressed in adorable leather armor. The frog's lily pad hat takes the cuteness cake.

A Couple Outliers

Outside of the standard ten Creature types of this set, Bloomburrow also includes a few one-off Creatures that merit close cuteness inspection. Let's take a moment to appreciate Three Tree Mascot and The Infamous Cruelclaw.

Three Tree Mascot

While there were no central Shapeshifter or Weasel themes in Bloomburrow, both these artworks are noteworthy for their cute depictions.

Three Tree Mascot looks like a scarecrow that a group of critters cobbled together to keep the birds out of their Dutch-inspired windmill village.

The Infamous Cruelclaw looks like a cross between a weasel, Zorro, and Little Red Riding Hood. I love its rapier and decorative outfit.

Wrapping It Up

Cute Magic cards aren't for everybody, but they are a delight to a significant subset of the player population. As far as cuteness goes, no set delivers on this theme as fully as Bloomburrow. The set is filled with adorable critters containing very human characteristics - facial expressions, clothing, armor, and weapons. This makes for an absolutely delightful, typal-themed set.

Fans of Bloomburrow must be wondering when we'll return to this plane. I don't know if there are definitive plans in Hasbro's pipeline, but you have to imagine we'll return at some point.

Some content creators are predicting a return to Bloomburrow sooner than later, as early as 2028. I'm not this bullish, but I do foresee a return to the beloved, delightful plane filled with adorable critters some point in the next five years.
