Deck Builder's Toolkit Twitter Q&A

Reddit

Having received a care package from our friends at Wizards yesterday, I've been fielding questions about the upcoming Deckbuilder's Toolkit via twitter today. Here are the questions (mostly) with answers. The questions have been attributed, I didn't take every question to try and minimize repetition. I also edited the questions for clarification and grammar (since we're off Twitter here.)

@OAFaye: How random are the "semi-random" cards and what Boosters did you get?

Answer: 81 will be the same between every toolkit, 44 will be randomized. In the first toolkit I opened I got, M10, ZEN, WWK, and CFX. Have not opened the second toolkit yet.

@williambcarey: What are the quality of the rares, if there are any?

Answer: No rares except in the boosters (which I haven't busted yet, but Evan Erwin got a Jace in his WWK pack.) The commons and uncommons are largely excellent. You get a lot of useful cards that will be put to use in your deck and in future decks.

@JayBoosh: Is it similar to the old products they used to sell like that, lots of cards that are or could be good for casual?

Answer: Pretty much. It reminds me a lot of the 4th edition starter box that had two tournament packs, some boosters and a rule book. You could create two decks out of a single toolkit and battle with your friends.

@uselessend: Does it look like the extra cards could make a new sealed format possible?

Possibly. It would feel more like a hampered constructed though since there is a broad foundation laid for you. I'm not really seeing it as a tournament viable format though.

@stupiddeck: Are there Zendikar lands in it?

No Zendikar full art lands, just M10.

@danielctw: Do they have packs before Alara block?

Nope, Conflux was a surprise as all the singles are M10 and ZEN forward, didn't expect any Alara block.

@sandwitchking: How many packs are there? How "random" are they?

Just four booster packs, not sure on randomness yet. I haven't opened my second toolkit. Saving it either for an episode or as a give away.

@JeroenCu: So, in your opinion - good product for starting players?

A GREAT product for starting players. I think the title is a misnomer slightly, it isn't really a toolkit. I mean, there are cards which see competitive play, but it isn't something I'm going to break into anytime I need to build a competitive deck. It's really more of a "Novice Deckbuilder Kit." Still, an awesome product that will go far in reaching newer players and helping them get into constructed formats.
