It's time for another Magic: the Gathering preview season. Today marks the start of previews for the newest expansion: Marvel Super Heroes. This set is the fourth expansion of 2026 and is the second Universes Beyond release of the year as well.

Unlike Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles earlier in the year, Marvel Super Heroes is a full-sized Universes Beyond set. Where sets like TMNT and Marvel's Spider-Man received criticism for being lackluster in card quality and Limited environment, this set looks like it'll be much more in line with what you'd expect of a typical release.
As today's Debut stream kicked off, we got our first glimpse at a deep collection of cards from a wide variety of releases.
The Main Cards
As you might expect, the meat and potatoes of this reveal were the core release cards from the main set. Tons of cards were shown off, taking inspiration from all manner of different aspects of what makes Marvel so awesome.
Heroes
The Hero Creature type returns once more following Marvel's Spider-Man, and this time it goes deeper in its approach.
The natural starting line for these are the Uncommon Hero cards. Many of these provide texture and show characters in different ways across their various storylines. The multicolored ones also help to flesh out Marvel Super Heroes' ten Draft archetypes as signpost uncommons to help steer the direction of your Drafts.
Unlike sets such as TMNT and Marvel's Spider-Man, Wizards confirmed there are no Legendary Creatures at Common this time around.
The Rares and Mythic Rares are where the real action is. If you're looking for powerful Constructed staples or your favorite new Commander, this is where you should be looking.
Cards like Captain Marvel, Earth's Protector and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl are great examples of this, providing powerful and fun effects for everyone. You even get to see some interesting oddballs like Wolverine, Fierce Fighter - now officially revealed after being shown as a variant comic book cover recently.
Transforming Modal Double-Faced Cards are back from Marvel's Spider-Man. These combine traditional Double-Faced cards with the MDFCs we got to know in sets like Zendikar Rising and Kaldheim.
Here, you can cast cards like Tony Stark // The Invincible Iron Man as either the front or back side of the card. If you have the front side version on the battlefield, you can use its ability to transform it into the back side whenever the ability allows you to do so.
Villains
If there are Heroes, there will naturally be Villains to go with them. Villains, a mainstay of Marvel that seek to foil the plot of the protagonists, return as a Creature type from Marvel's Spider-Man as well.
Much like with the Hero cards, we see several of these Villains at Uncommon in addition to higher rarities. These play a similar role, acting as smaller cards that also point you toward specific directions for your Drafts.
The biggest and baddest cards are in the Rares and Mythic Rares. Creatures like Kang the Conqueror, Elektra, Daughter of the Hand, and The Kingpin of Crime provide some really awesome abilities for some of Marvel's biggest villains.
Perhaps the most exciting of them, though, is Thanos, the Mad Titan. Fans of films like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame will love to see Thanos make his grand appearance here with a fittingly epic set of abilities.
Everything Else
Heroes and Villains aren't the only things that make up the set, though. Several other iconic favorites make a showing as well in this set.
If Thor, God of Thunder gets a card in this set, you'd better believe his trusty weapon Mjolnir won't be far behind. Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor brings with it not only one heck of a strong Equipment, but also the fun text of "Equip Worthy." Worthy Creatures are White and/or Red Legendary Creatures that aren't Villains, ensuring that you can Equip your copies of Thor and Captain America no problem.
We got some other expected Artifact cards as well. The Ten Rings are the powerful items used by Shang-Chi and allow you to repeatedly draw tons of cards turn after turn.
The Arc Reactor - the powerful item which gives Tony Stark the capability to become Iron Man - also makes an appearance as a strong mana rock. In a deck full of Artifacts, you can take advantage of its Improvise ability to cast it with ease.
Expect both of these to become instant staples in Commander decks everywhere.
Rounding things out are a handful of other cards worth mentioning as well.
Plans are the latest Enchantment subtype, allowing Villains to do something fun and flavorful in order to enhance gameplay.
Similarly, Sagas like Armor Wars return to provide effective story moments in ways that might be familiar to fans of Marvel. While not every story gets the Saga treatment, many get fun one-off card designs like Multiversal Incursion or Secret Invasion.
All of this is a sure sign that leaning into the stories that make Marvel so awesome is a clear focus in addition to creating fantastic gameplay.

Finally among main set cards, we get our set of typical Basic Land cards. Each of these depicts a setting that players may recognize from throughout the Marvel universe.
Variants
In addition to the usual suite of cards, we got to see several of the awesome variant versions of these many different cards as well.
Borderless Logo Cards
The first of these are the Borderless Logo Cards. Each of these depicts one of the many Heroes and Villains from throughout Marvel and does so in a fun, stylized way. While the characters themselves act as the main focus of the set, the background of their art depicts a solid color gradient as well as their typical comic book logo.
Comic Panel Cards
In sticking with the comic book roots of the set, players can also expect to find various Comic Panel Cards.
While these cards don't directly depict original artwork from the comic books, they pay homage with a style reminiscent of those comics. You can expect to find a more traditional comic book art style as well as the use of panels on many of them. This is best represented on Saga cards, as each panel depicts a different ability on the Saga with the abilities themselves appearing as text boxes.
Borderless Scene Cards
There will also be a number of Borderless Scene Cards throughout these sets. This treatment sees a return following their appearance in other past Universes Beyond releases like The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Each card is meant to line up alongside several other cards. When put together, they depict grand scenes of epic battles or fun settings taking place in the Marvel world. A number of different scene images seem to be represented across several cards that will no doubt become more apparent as the week goes on.
Classic Comic Cards
Some of the bigger highlights among the variants for Marvel Super Heroes are the Classic Comic Cards. Each of these will depict a famous original comic cover re-stylized as a Magic card.
Naturally, some of these are featured on a bunch of different Hero cards. Two of the new ones shown today are variants of Tony Stark // The Invincible Iron Man and King T'Challa // Black Panther, Hope Enduring.
In addition to those two, we also got to see this treatment on two villain cards: Elektra, Daughter of the Hand and Thanos, the Mad Titan.
There are fifteen of these cards throughout the set. Each one only comes in foil and can only be found in Collector Boosters.
Full Art Basics

In addition to the usual Basic Land cards with normal Magic card frames, there are also two sets of full-art Basics as well. Each of these depicts a setting that you might typically expect to see in the Marvel comics while also making sure to show off the characters of these worlds within.
Commander
Next up, we have the Commander cards.
While we previously got our first look at the face cards from The Fantastic Four precon, this time around we got to see several of the cards from the other three decks.
Avengers Assemble Deck
First up is the Avengers Assemble precon, helmed by the one and only Captain America, Team Leader. He's widely considered the main leader of the group and seems the most fitting way to lead a group of Heroes.
The deck also features Director Nick Fury as its backup Commander. While Captain America typically leads The Avengers on the front lines, Nick Fury runs things on the back end and brings the group together.
Captain Marvel, Apex Avenger rounds things out as the one additional new exclusive Hero revealed in this set. While she's not nearly as strong as her main set counterpart, she provides some strong gameplay as a top end piece in your deck.
Doom Prevails Deck
The second deck is the one which focuses more on the Villains of Marvel in Doom Prevails. As the name might imply, the precon focuses on the mighty Doctor Doom, King of Latveria as the main Commander of the deck. However, he's far from the only Villain here.
The alternate Commander for Doom Prevails is Loki, the Deceiver. Loki has become a fan favorite from Marvel for his cunning and wit, and he appears here as a secondary way for fans to get in on the fun.
Two other new Villain cards show up as well: Kang Prime and Lady Loki, Agent of Chaos. While the main set Kang provides a way to manipulate time by taking additional turns, Kang Prime does so by giving cards Suspend - a fun nod to Time Spiral in the process. Lady Loki, on the other hand, acts as a different take on the beloved character that leans onto her chaotic nature and makes your games extra crazy.
Wakanda Forever Deck
Last but not least is the Wakanda Forever precon, focusing heavily on the Black Panther series and characters.
The main headline Commander of the deck is, naturally, T'Challa, the Black Panther. However, much like how you can select from many different choices for The Fantastic Four precon, you can do the same here. The new Hero cards Okoye, Mighty and Adored, Shuri, the Black Panther, and Storm, Queen of Wakanda all act as possible alternate Commanders, providing you with plenty of flexibility in how you want to play the deck.
One other card was shown in Heart-Shaped Herb. The highly thematic card depicts the ritual that these characters must go through to become the Black Panther, dying only to be reborn anew in a stronger form.
Jumpstart
Several Jumpstart-exclusive cards were also revealed. As that name might imply, these cards will be found in the set's Jumpstart release - a product where two themed half-decks are smashed together for a fun Limited experience.
While the focus was all on the upcoming Legendary Creatures, we also got to see one of the reprints that will likely be included among the set's cards. Dark Ritual is a powerful spell from Alpha and is a welcome inclusion here, boasting awesome new Doctor Doom art.
Welcome Decks

Back in April, Wizards unveiled a line of Welcome Decks for Marvel Super Heroes. These are meant to provide brand new players with a free deck handed out by local game stores to get them into the game.
While the full contents of these decks have yet to be revealed, Wizards did unveil the five face Mythic Rares of each of the five decks. Each of these represents a fan favorite character, providing players with a fantastic way to check out what makes Magic such an awesome game through a familiar setting.
Source Material Cards
The final major element to this release are the Source Material Cards from the set, acting as a sort of Marvel-themed Special Guest set dubbed "Marvel Universe."
This sub-set acts as a series of bonus sheet cards that appear infrequently throughout the set on reprints of existing cards. Each boasts art from throughout the original Marvel comics - both as cover art and art from within the comics.
Perhaps the most notable of these Source Material Cards are the above five cards. If you might be wondering how they existed previously, they were the five face cards for the original Marvel Secret Lair releases that sold out extremely fast. By producing new copies as Source Material Cards, it provides many eager fans with a cool new way to acquire these cards if they missed them the first time around.
Many of the cards in this release give lower-end cards some fun new visual treatments. Cards like Counterspell and Monstrous Rage are the kind of evergreen spells players everywhere love to cast. Even some roleplayers that have gotten pricier as time has gone on, like Steelshaper's Gift, get a fun new version here.
Naturally, plenty of higher profile cards make an appearance as well.
Teferi's Protection - stylized here as T'Challa's Protection - and Fiery Emancipation are Commander favorites which get awesome art treatments here. Players can also hope to find one of the more expensive cards in recent memory, Simulacrum Synthesizer, this way. This version depicts one of the earliest versions of Iron Man, showing just how deep Wizards is willing to go with the references to the beloved IP.
Several older Magic favorites make a showing here too.
Show and Tell, No Mercy, and Defense of the Heart are prime examples of rare and expensive cards from the game's earlier years. Both No Mercy and Defense of the Heart are Commander staples while Show and Tell is an extremely powerful means of cheating massive threats into play in formats like Legacy and Timeless.
The cards shown here are only a handful of the ones revealed during the Debut Stream. Be sure to check out the Official Card Image Gallery or the CoolStuffInc Marvel Super Heroes page to see them all.
Conclusion
After a long repetitious wait, Marvel Super Heroes is here and it's looking pretty awesome. Many of the cards shown off today look like the real deal with several big potential players coming for Standard and Commander alike.
Previews for the set will continue all throughout the week, with Commander previews following all next week as well. Be sure to check back here to find out all the juicy details on the latest Universes Beyond release in the days to come.
