Five Green Decks for Avatar Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. We're getting close to the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed, which means I'm nearing the end of my look at decks that are focused on a single color. With only two articles remaining in this series, I'm looking at decks featuring the color Green. Let's get started.

Mono-Green Earthbending Landfall

We'll get things started off with a Mono-Green deck that benefits from having multiple lands in play. Let's take a look at the deck.

Earthbender Ascension

Earthbender Ascension turns one of your lands into a creature when it enters play. Then, you get to put another basic land card from your deck onto the battlefield tapped. Doing this will trigger its landfall ability which places a quest counter onto this enchantment. Once it has four or more quest counters on it, you start setting up a way to finish off your opponent, giving a +1/+1 counter plus trample to one of your creatures.

A lot of creatures in this deck have landfall abilities, which will be able to be triggered additional times while you have Icetill Explorer in play. Icetill Explorer allows you to play an additional land on your turn. You can also play lands from your graveyard. This is important because of Icetill Explorer's landfall ability that forces you to mill a card whenever you achieve landfall.

Selesnya Combo

Next, we'll add some White mana and look at a combo deck that wants to combo out some gigantic creatures. Let's take a look at the deck.

Smuggler's Surprise

You might notice that there are an awful lot of very expensive creatures in this deck. That's on purpose, because the plan for this deck is to be able to sneak these creatures into play with the help of Smuggler's Surprise. However, Smuggler's Surprise requires you to have the two creature cards you're sneaking into play in your hand. Luckily, there's a bit of searching in this deck.

That searching is in the form of The Seriema. This Spacecraft allows you to search your library for a legendary creature to put into your hand. For maximum efficiency, you'll want to search for either Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant or Kona, Rescue Beastie. Each of these creatures will allow you to play other creatures from your hand for free, and with such large creatures in this deck, you'll surely have an advantage over your opponent.

Simic Artifacts

The next deck I have for you wants to bring the game to a close with an onslaught of Construct creature tokens. Let's take a look at the deck.

Simulacrum Synthesizer
Intrepid Paleontologist
Vaultborn Tyrant

Simulacrum Synthesizer has the ability to create a lot of 0/0 Constructs which get +1/+1 for each artifact you control. That can certainly add up with the number of artifacts with a mana value of 3 in this deck, but you can get even more value with the help of the two creature cards in this deck.

Intrepid Paleontologist enables you to exile a card from a graveyard. If you happen to exile your own Vaultborn Tyrant from your graveyard, you can use Intrepid Paleontologist's ability to cast Dinosaur creature cards from the cards you've exiled with it. This will give you a couple of opportunities to play Vaultborn Tyrant, who will become an artifact creature token copy of itself when it dies, further triggering Simulacrum Synthesizer.

Golgari Combo

The next deck I have for you is willing to make some big sacrifices in order to win games. Let's check it out.

Beifong's Bounty Hunters
Bloodghast

Beifong's Bounty Hunters and Bloodghast are a match made in heaven. While you have Beifong's Bounty Hunters in play, if a nonland creature you control dies, you'll get to earthbend for an amount equal to the power of the creature that died. As long as you have a way to sacrifice your Bloodghast, like Umbral Collar Zealot, you can create a loop where you sacrifice Bloodghast to earthbend, creating a creature land. Then, sacrifice that creature land, which will return the land to play. This also returns Bloodghast to play, letting you do the combo again and again.

A combo like this is only worthwhile if you can gain something from it. In order for this combo to do something worthwhile, you'll want to have Iridescent Vinelasher in play. That way, each time you sacrifice the creature land you've made from earthbending, Iridescent Vinelasher will deal 1 damage to your opponent when the land returns to the battlefield.

Gruul Budget Anti-Lessons

The final deck I have for you this week is a Gruul deck that you can play if decks that focus on playing lots of Lessons are prevalent in your area. Let's take a look at the deck.

Magebane Lizard
Dauntless Scrapbot

Since Lesson decks like to play numerous noncreature spells in a turn, there's no better creature to play against them than Magebane Lizard. While this Lizard is in play, whenever either player casts a noncreature spell, Magebane Lizard will deal damage to that player equal to the number of noncreature spells that player has cast this turn. While this effect will affect you, the hope is that it will affect your opponent much more.

Another great creature to play against Lesson decks is Dauntless Scrapbot. Since Lesson decks want to have other Lessons in their graveyard, Dauntless Scrapbot messes that plan up. When this Robot enters the battlefield, each opponent's graveyard will be exiled. It will also create a Lander token for you to use to ramp up your mana with in the future, giving you another advantage over your opponent.

Wrapping Up

While Green decks are typically known for their mana ramping ability, hopefully you can see from these decks that they are capable of so much more, especially when taking advantage of abilities that other colors provide. Each of these decks is unique, and all look to be a ton of fun to play.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
