Kaldheim Standard Success Stories

Reddit

Hello everyone. Kaldheim is here and it has provided tools for new decks that people are using to find success. This week, I have three such decks for you. All of these decks were played on Magic Arena by Platinum or Mythic ranked players and achieved six or more victories in a row. Let's get started.

Deadly Snow

We start this week by taking a look at a deck that features a good number of Snow permanents. Let's take a look at it.

Narfi, Betrayer King rules the roost in this deck. He provides a +1/+1 bonus to the majority of your other creatures, leaving only Chevill, Bane of Monsters out in the cold. Narfi also becomes easy to return to the battlefield once you have a copy of him in your graveyard. You'll often find yourself hoping to mill a copy of Narfi when you play Mire Triton, so you can save yourself a couple of turns before getting the King in play.

Jorn, God of Winter allows each of your snow permanents to untap whenever Jorn attacks. Since Jorn is a snow permanent himself, this effectively provides vigilance to Jorn. On the flip side, Kaldring, the Rimestaff can help you fill up your side of the battlefield considerably. For the low, low cost of only tapping it, Kaldring can return a snow permanent from your graveyard to the battlefield, though it will come in tapped. If you have Jorn, God of Winter in play alongside Kaldring, you can potentially bring back two snow permanents from your graveyard to the battlefield each turn.

This deck also has a pair of creatures that help make this deck run more smoothly. Sculptor of Winter can be tapped to untap any land in this deck, offering you a bit of mana acceleration. If you have nothing to cast with that extra mana, you can activate the ability of Frost Augur. Frost Augur allows you to draw the top card of your library as long as it is a snow card. This can help provide you with a bit of card advantage.

Mono-Green Stompy

The next deck I have for you is a great choice to play right after the release of a new set. Let's take a look at the deck.

Mono-Green decks have performed well in Standard for quite a while. They typically offer some form of mana acceleration, and this deck is not exception. In Search of Greatness allows you to cast a permanent spell from your hand that has a converted mana cost (CMC) equal to the highest CMC of other permanents you have in play plus one. Any time you can get something for free, you'll want to take advantage of it. If you end up having nothing in your hand that you can cast for free, you can try to set things up for the following turn, since you will scry 1 if you don't cast anything for free.

Kaldheim brings a couple of great additions to the Mono-Green archetype. The first is Old-Growth Troll. This Troll Warrior has a very restrictive mana cost, so you'll likely see it only in Mono-Green decks. It fits right in within a deck like this one. For three mana, you get a 4/4 creature that will return to the battlefield as an enchantment when it dies. You can use that enchantment to ramp your mana, or to create a new 4/4 Troll Warrior creature token that has trample. This provides a lot of resiliency against decks with board wipes.

Another great addition from Kaldheim is Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider. For six mana, you get a 6/6 creature that has both trample and haste. You'll be able to push through a ton of damage or destroy multiple of your opponents creatures. Vorinclex also works well when you cast either Vivien, Monsters' Advocate or Garruk, Unleashed while Vorinclex is in play. You may not be able to rely on halving your opponent's counters on their planeswalkers or other permanents, but you can make sure you get the doubling of your own counters whenever possible, which can help you win games more easily.

Death by Deathtouch

The final deck I have for you this week features poison as an alternate way to win. Let's check it out.

One of the first things to notice about this deck is that all of the creatures within it have deathtouch. That makes this deck very difficult to play against if your opponent's deck is planning to attack on the ground. Its main weakness will be against decks that have flying creatures. Make sure to save your copies of Primal Might and Ram Through to use on those creatures that have flying. Alternatively, you can use these spells against creatures your opponent controls that have a high power and trample. Ram Through, in particular, allows even your smallest creature to destroy any creature your opponent controls thanks to deathtouch.

Fynn, the Fangbearer offers you an alternate means of winning games. With Fynn on the battlefield, any of your creatures with deathtouch that deals combat damage to a player will also give that player two poison counters. I was a player during the Scars of Mirrodin block, and I loved infect. It's a very polarizing ability; either you love it or you hate it. Because of Fynn, the Fangbearer's ability, your opponent will be forced to make tough decisions when deciding whether to block your creatures or to take a couple of poison counters.

One creature that can have a huge effect on winning the game quickly is Hooded Blightfang. This Snake will allow each of your creatures with deathtouch to drain your opponent of one point of life whenever it attacks. This gives you a bit of extra reach that can be needed to close out some games. I've been playing this deck for a few days, and games are often won much more quickly when I have a copy (or more) of Hooded Blightfang on the battlefield. Once that happens, I find it is better to hold back some, so I can make a massive strike later in the game, draining multiple points of life from my opponent and forcing them to decide what creatures they want to lose.
