Dragon Decks from Tarkir: Dragonstorm Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. Now that Tarkir: Dragonstorm has officially been released, it's time to look at some decks featuring one of Magic's most popular creature types, Dragons. Let's get started.

Jeskai Dragons

We'll begin things off by looking at a Jeskai deck that uses a pair of Sarkhan's to great effect. Let's take a look at the deck.

Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant

If you behold a Dragon when Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant enters the battlefield, you'll be able to create a Treasure token. Doing this is important because Dragon creatures are typically expensive to play, but they're also very powerful. If you're able to play a Dragon a turn or two quicker than usual, you'll have an advantage over your opponent. Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant will also become a Dragon and gain flying and a +1/+1 counter during a turn where you have a Dragon enter the battlefield. Not only do you get a powerful Dragon, but Sarkhan also becomes more powerful as well.

Sarkhan, Soul Aflame also helps you play your Dragons more quickly by reducing their cost by one colorless mana. This version of Sarkhan also benefits when you play a Dragon by becoming a copy of that Dragon for the turn, while avoiding the legendary rule. This ability can be especially powerful when you play Twinflame Tyrant, as having two copies of this Dragon in play will quadruple the damage you'll deal to your opponent and their creatures.

Sultai Dragons

If you're looking for a control deck featuring some Dragons, I've got you covered. Let's check the deck out.

Disruptive Stormbrood
Scavenger Regent
Marang River Regent

As a control deck, this deck used Dragons that also doubled as Omens to great benefit. Disruptive Stormbrood can be cast as the Omen, Petty Revenge, to destroy a creature with power 3 or less. Scavenger Regent has the Omen, Exude Toxin, which can deal with threats of any size, as long as you have enough mana to pump into this spell. Marang River Regent has the Omen, Coil and Catch, which gives you a bit of card selection and advantage. Plus, once you cast these spells as omens, you shuffle them back into your deck when they resolve, where you can potentially draw and play them again.

As a finisher, Teval, Arbiter of Virtue can certainly get the job done. As a 6/6 flying creature, your opponent's life total will be gobbled up in no time. Teval also has lifelink, which will come in quite handy since you lose life whenever you cast spells while Teval is in play. Teval also has another ability allowing spells you cast to have delve, giving you access to more spells during your turn. Make sure to be as efficient as possible when choosing what spells to cast while Teval is on the battlefield, and remember that your life total is just a resource for you to use throughout the game.

Temur Dragons

Next, I have a deck for you that utilizes a pair of Temur cards to quickly and efficiently reign destruction down on your opponent. Let's take a look at the deck.

Dragonback Assault

Dragonback Assault pulls double duty in this deck acting as both removal and a source of creatures. When you play Dragonback Assault, it will deal 3 damage to each creature and planeswalker in play. That should help you clear some of the riff-raff from the battlefield. Then, while Dragonback Assault is in play, whenever you play a land, you'll create a 4/4 Dragon creature token with flying. This pairs nicely with any land that you can sacrifice to search for a different land, such as Fabled Passage.

To make those 4/4 Dragon creature tokens even more threatening, you can play Frostcliff Siege. By choosing Temur, you'll give creatures you control a +1/+0 boost, plus trample and haste. Suddenly those 4/4 Dragons are now 5/4 Dragons that can trample over any blockers, plus they can attack unexpectedly. This two-card combo can make this deck very explosive, netting you wins very quickly.

Mostly Mono-Red Dragons

Since I typically like to look at a Mono-Red deck the first week a new set releases, the final deck I have for you this week is a mostly Mono-Red deck. Let's check it out.

Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest

This is another deck that utilizes the Treasure token that is created when Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant enters the battlefield to power out some truly magnificent beast earlier than usual. In addition to this Treasure token, it also utilizes the extra mana generated by The Irencrag and Carnelian Orb of Dragonkind. It can be extremely beneficial to use the mana from Carnelian Orb of Dragonkind as it also provides haste to the Dragon you cast with it.

Red decks don't typically have much in the way of card advantage, so the fact that this deck provides two sources of additional cards you can cast each turn is awesome. Bonehoard Dracosaur exiles two cards each turn that you can cast this turn. It also provides you with additional creatures or Treasure tokens. Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest provides you a minimum of one extra card you can play until the end of your next turn. If you decide not to cast Dragonhawk's extra cards, they will deal direct damage to your opponent, which hastens the end of the game along.

Wrapping Up

Many Magic players love Dragon creatures, myself included. If you also love Dragons, you should consider trying out one or more of these decks, as they all look like a ton of fun to play.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
