Drafting with Big Nass, AVR #4

Reddit

Welcome back, everyone, to my favorite Draft format. I may or may not have finally figured out how to win at it, so this Draft is less of a failboat than usual, but I make no promises. As usual, text recap follows the video links.

Match 3, Game 2

Pack 1, Pick 1:

My Pick:

I had Angel of Glory's Rise in my Sealed deck at the 2HG side event at SCG: Detroit, and in my experience, it’s quite bomby. No one ever beats this card when it’s set up properly, which isn’t hard to do. It’s a shame most of the rest of the good cards in the pack are white, but there’s not much I can do about that.

Pack 1, Pick 2:

My Pick:

Maalfeld Twins is pretty good, but not a good enough reason to be in black. I’d rather stick with white, and Nearheath Pilgrim is a fine card.

Pack 1, Pick 3:

My Pick:

With the lack of removal in the format, Latch Seeker does a pretty good jump of ending games, especially if you can pump it. I’m certainly not taking Cathedral Sanctifier over it.

Pack 1, Pick 4:

My Pick:

R/W Humans is kind of the perfect deck for Angel of Glory's Rise, and I’m by no means committed to blue. Again, I’m not interested in black, so that leaves the Fervent Cathar.

Pack 1, Pick 5:

My Pick:

When you cast Angel of Glory's Rise, and Kessig Malcontents is one of the Humans you bring back, your opponents are going to have a bad time. Moorland Inquisitor is more replaceable.

Pack 1, Pick 6:

My Pick:

As much as I want to live the dream by being milled for a bunch and reanimating an Angel of Glory's Rise, there really isn’t anything else to take over the Defy Death.

Pack 1, Pick 7:

My Pick:

This is a pretty big sign R/W Humans is open. Moonlight Geist is fine, but I when Thatcher Revolt is good, it’s really good.

Pack 1, Pick 8:

My Pick:

Imma rare-draft me a Loothouse. Nothing to see here.

Pack 1, Pick 9:

My Pick:

I’m lacking on the 2-drops here, so I really can’t be taking mediocre removal spells.

Pack 2, Pick 1:

My Pick:

I like Heirs of Stromkirk a lot, but I feel that it’s best in U/R. In R/W, it’s just okay. Gang of Devils is always welcome, however.

Pack 2, Pick 2:

My Pick:

I really wanted to take Tibalt here. It’s only worth around 2 tickets, so I can’t really justify rare-drafting it. My crazy Griselbrand deck is so much fun that I wouldn’t mind battling with it online, but that’s neither here nor there. I have to draft a real card here, and Emancipation Angel fits the bill nicely.

Pack 2, Pick 3:

My Pick:

And . . . miss.

Pack 2, Pick 4:

My Pick:

In most formats, this would be a sideboard card you might not even bring in against a black deck. In this format, it’s a main-deck all-star.

Pack 2, Pick 5:

My Pick:

I’m not sure if this will end up making my deck, but it’s not as though I’m taking it over anything good.

Pack 3, Pick 1:

My Pick:

Goldnight Redeemer is powerful enough to warrant taking it over a 2-drop Human. I might not take it over Kruin Striker, but Thraben Valiant is easy to replace.

Pack 3, Pick 2:

My Pick:

I’d normally take Mad Prophet here, but I think this deck really needs the Riot Ringleader.

Pack 3, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Sweet, another crap rare I’ve played in Constructed! I’ll take my Pilgrim and move along.

Pack 3, Pick 4:

My Pick:

Vigilance on a 2/1 is pretty worthless, whereas first strike is actually relevant.

Pack 3, Pick 5:

My Pick:

All in on Margaret Thatcher.

Pack 3, Pick 6:

My Pick:

Pack 3, Pick 7:

My Pick:

As much as I hate this card, I have no removal or tricks of any kind. Also, I have enough cards for the top end of my curve.

Pack 3, Pick 8:

My Pick:

I’m not sure if this pick is right. I don’t know if Vigilante Justice is good enough that I want to play two of them. I’d rather err on the side of caution and pick up another man.

Here’s what I submitted:

The deck ran really well, and I won the Draft fairly easily. I even raced a 6/5 Wandering Wolf with the help of a 5/5 lifelink Emancipation Angel. I even beat a Craterhoof Behemoth!

I recommend you check out the videos to see the deck in action along with my usual maniacal cackling.

Hope you guys enjoyed the Draft, and until next time, may the power of Margaret Thatcher be with you.
