Spider-Man has officially swung into Magic: the Gathering! This set is full of so many legendary creatures depicting the many different Spider-Men the multiverse has to offer. There are so many new legends that Commander players can't wait to brew with that you may overlook some cards that are powerful for your existing Commander decks. Today I am going to highlight some absolute powerful cards from Spider-Man that are great new additions to the Commander format!
10. Rhino's Rampage
Rhino's Rampage is one change away from being the number one card on this list. For only one hybrid Gruul mana, you fight target creature and if excess damage is dealt you also destroy a noncreature artifact with three or less mana value. This card potentially removes two things off the board for only a 1 mana investment which is amazing, however, it is a sorcery. Unfortunately, you can only use this powerful card during your turn which could give your opponents the window of opportunity to get value of their cards before you can remove them. Instant speed interaction is what keeps the game of Commander exciting and unpredictable. While I am not saying sorcery speed interaction is bad, it is just not as good as being able to stop your opponents dead in their tracks during their turn.
9. Shadow of the Goblin
Shadow of the Goblin is a 2-mana enchantment that will help fill your graveyard and fix your hand during each of your turns. At the beginning of your first main phase you get to discard a card and if you do draw a card. This is great at sculpting your hand with spells that you can play. This enchantment also deals one damage to each of your opponents whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand. This effect is great for lots of Rakdos focused cards that care about casting spells from exile or if you are playing Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin in the Command zone. I think this card will slowly become a staple with the constant support we are getting for casting spells out of exile.
8. Multiversal Passage
Multiversal Passage is a great new land that can enter untapped! If you Shock in this land, you get a land of any color into play untapped. This is great at making sure you have the exact color of mana right when you need it. I do not see this becoming an immediate staple as we have so many lands to choose from anymore. I remember when Fabled Passage first released and everyone swore that you needed it for every casual Commander list moving forward. Now, that card only sees play in landfall synergies mostly. I believe that this card sits at a similar shelf where there are so many lands to choose from that this might not make the cut most of the time, but it is still to be considered.
7. Chameleon, Master of Disguise
Chameleon, Master of Disguise is a new Clone to add to the heavy roster of clones for Commander. Chameleon, Master of Disguise is an amazing clone effect since it keeps his name, meaning you can copy legendary creatures! We don't see this effect all that often and they usually stand out above the rest since you can take advantage of having multiple copies of your Commander. Chameleon also has a Mayhem cost for two and a Blue mana, but I am unsure how often that will come up. Frantic Search and Careful Study are Blue cards though, so it's not unheard of. Chameleon will also be the cheapest monetarily when it comes to this effect so I would pick up a few copies now.
6. Hide on the Ceiling
Hide on the Ceiling is an interesting take on a massive flicker effect like Eerie Interlude. Hide on the Ceiling exiles an amount of artifacts and/or creatures equal to the amount of mana paid into it. These permanents return to play at the next end step. This effect is great for dodging board wipes and removal, doubling up on "enters" triggers, and removing your opponents creatures or artifacts when in a tricky spot. The versatility of this card is amazing and the fact that this can hit two card types is even better. March of the Swirling Mist is a card that I often like to play in Blue to help dodge certain effects, but this might be a new card that takes over my March spot.
5. Impostor Syndrome
Imposter Syndrome is an amazing new Blue enchantment that rewards you for dealing combat damage to your opponents. Whenever a nontoken creature deals combat damage to an opponent you create a nonlegendary token copy of that creature. Again, creating multiple copies of your Commander can be a powerful effect...this allows you to do that each turn! Blue on occasion will get effects that care about damage, but they usually reward you with extra cards, this one rewards you with extra creatures. Peregrine Drake and Cloud of Faeries are the first two creatures that come to mind when thinking about powerful enters abilities that also happen to be on creatures with built in evasion. I think that entire decks could be built around this card in the future so it definitely deserves its spot on this list.
4. Electro, Assaulting Battery
Electro, Assaulting Battery is a brand-new type of Birgi, God of Storytelling effect. Electro generates Red mana whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell. Electro also makes sure that mana never goes to waste by not allowing mana to empty from your pool as steps and phases end. That effect is very powerful and isn't attached to the mana that he generates, it's all Red mana that you create. Electro also can deal damage on his way out if your opponents decide he is too much of a threat. This card is going to be a perfect inclusion in storm decks like Veyran, Voice of Duality for years to come!
3. Spider-Sense
Spider-Man brought us quite a powerful Counterspell in Spider-Sense. For one and a Blue mana you can counter a sorcery, instant, or triggered ability. Countering that many different effects already makes it a contender for cEDH. This card also has Web-slinging, a brand-new mechanic that reduces the cost of the spell if you return a tapped creature you control to your hand. If you play this for its Web-slinging cost, it is only 1 mana. 1 mana counterspells are incredibly powerful and this one is extremely flexible with the things it can target on the stack. This card is most likely the most powerful card for cEDH that we received from this set. With an ever-growing supply of counterspells it is getting more and more tricky to decide which ones to play in Commander.
2. Web of Life and Destiny
Web of Life and Destiny is a Timmy player's dream. This 8 mana Green enchantment will cheat out a creature from the top five cards of your deck each turn. 8 mana seems like a lot, however, this card also has Convoke to help mitigate the high cost. Web of Life and Destiny also triggers at the beginning of combat on your turn, meaning you get immediate value off of it! In Commander, I believe cards that provide immediate value the turn they are played are better than cards that don't. I recently was having a conversation about how bad I think the card Doubling Season is since it doesn't create tokens the turn it comes into play leaving it as a huge target for your opponents for a whole turn. That aside, I believe Web of Life and Destiny is one of the most powerful Green cards we have seen in quite a long time and I can't wait to get a copy of one for myself.
1. The Soul Stone
I don't think the top spot will be a surprise to anyone. The most powerful card for Commander from Spider-Man, is none other than The Soul Stone. The Soul Stone will be a staple for most Black decks moving forward as it is an untapped mana rock for 2 mana. This mana rock also happens to be indestructible and has an ability to reanimate creatures from graveyards. Now, the Reanimate ability is highly costly and slow, but this effect is on what is essentially an Arcane Signet. The fact that this card is only 2 mana that can tap for mana immediately makes it good enough to be considered for any deck, the extra text is all bonus points. It is sad to see a non Spider-Man card at the top of this list, however, it will be exciting to see how they design the rest of the Infinity Stone cycle in the future.
That wraps it up for the most powerful cards for Commander from the brand new Spider-Man set! Hopefully you get to experience some of these powerful new cards for yourself and enjoy finding new homes for them in your custom builds. I will be excited to see these cards played and see if they live up to the hype!
See you on the battlefield!
