Prismari Previews Make a Splash with Secrets of Strixhaven

Reddit

Secrets of Strixhaven previews continue today for our third day of outstanding previews. Things kicked off with the Debut Stream on Tuesday as well as Wednesday's coverage of the set's five Commander decks.

Now we're at the point where the preview season covers a different college of Strixhaven every day, with the exception of next Tuesday's Mystical Archive coverage.

This week, we're covering Blue and Red cards all the way down with the Prismari. There's a ton of outstanding cards to cover so let's not waste any time.

Who Are The Prismari?

The Prismari are the art students of Strixhaven, gathered to learn their craft under the banner of the Founder Prismari, here depicted as Prismari, the Inspiration.

Frequently, Prismari students are depicted painting, sculpting, or making music. They love to do so in the flashiest and most bombastic way, which leads to them benefitting you, the player, for casting the biggest spells you can muster.

If you'd like to learn a bit more about the Prismari, the day's previews kicked off with a side-story about Rootha. She was the main Prismari student from the original Strixhaven: School of Mages set and receives a showing here.

In addition to a land first revealed yesterday - Spectacle Summit - One new card was revealed. Spectacular Skywhale provides a fantastic new take on the classic Wee Dragonauts style of play.

New Legends

As things really picked up, we got to see a handful of awesome new Legendary Creatures - perfect for your Commander decks.

Bleeding Cool brought us this new take on a classic Prismari Legend with Zaffai and the Tempests. Zaffai first appeared on the Commander 2021 card Zaffai, Thunder Conductor. Rather than offering a bunch of different effects as you cast bigger spells, this time Zaffai allows you to cast whatever Instant and Sorcery you want for free once during each of your turns.

While Zaffai and the Tempests is a great card to put in the Command Zone, that's not so much the case for Orysa, Tide Choreorgrapher. Orysa is best in Constructed and Limited where you can fill your board with decent sized creatures and then draw cards for just 1u. Orysa was previewed by Ben Bateman.

Cast Lots Of Spells

As noted previously, the Prismari love to cast plenty of spells. Let's look at some examples of this, as well as ways to help cast them and benefit from them.

Traumatic Critique is every artist's nightmare: the fear of harsh criticism about the work that you produce. It's also an extremely powerful spell, once more previewed by Ben Batemen. This flexible masterpiece allows you to cast it as little more than a Thrill of Possibility or deal massive damage in addition to the looting.

Speaking of looting, or should I say lute-ing, Resonating Lute is a mighty Artifact previewed by Star City Games. With this, you're given the ability to make even more mana to cast the biggest spells possible. It's even designed in such a way that it makes extra copies not drown you in mana. If you have enough cards in your hand, it can still manage to drown you in card advantage.

We also got to see two more spell-related Prismari cards from fellbrinkmtg on Instagram.

Muse Seeker gives you an awesome way to loot through your deck as you cast more spells. If they cost five mana or more, though, then you won't need to discard anything. Simply draw the spell and keep the chain going.

The more you discard, however, the more it can fuel cards like Steal the Show. This powerful spell allows you to swap out your hand and then deal a ton of damage for each Instant and Sorcery in your graveyard. At only three mana, that truly is nothing short of a steal.

Be Prepared

Finally, we have a small handful of cards with the Prepare mechanic. These allow you to use up the Prepared status of a card to cast the spell side of the card for a unique effect.

In addition to Zaffai and the Tempests, Bleeding Cool had one more sweet card to show off. Campus Composer offers a fine Creature that can then make another one the following turn with its Aqueous Aria spell. This card is probably little more than Limited fodder but is sure to make a splash at your upcoming Prerelease events.

The last preview card I have to show off is the one foreign card revealed by Japanese website 4gamer. The card was revealed to have the English name of Maelstrom Artisan by the website and appears to be really awesome.

Translators around the internet determined that it has Haste and enters Prepared. Its spell side is a two- mana Stone Rain, but only for Non-Basic Lands. That's sure to be huge given how many Non-Basics are floating around.

Conclusion

I'm one of the biggest fans out there of the Prismari. As a kid, I would draw all the time and dreamed of being an animator or a singer in a heavy metal band, so this school just speaks to my soul.

Friday, April 3rd - previews will continue with another theme. We'll be taking a look at the history lovers of Lorehold as they excavate the past.
