Secrets of Strixhaven Previews Have Begun

Secrets of Strixhaven is upon us, with preview season kicking off in earnest earlier this week. Tuesday saw a deluge of previews as the Debut Stream brought us back to the fan favorite world of Arcavios for fresh studies and familiar faces.

Since the Debut Stream, we've had three additional days of previews with each day featuring its own theme. Wednesday covered all of the Commander decks, Thursday highlighted the Prismari, and today focused on Lorehold.

I'm providing coverage for all of these preview days right here on CoolStuffInc, so be sure to check them out.

The newest Magic expansion is right around the corner, so be sure to check with your local game store to find out more details about prerelease in two weeks. If they don't have what you're looking for, be sure to hop over to the CoolStuffInc Secrets of Strixhaven page now and lock in your pre-orders today.

In addition to Secrets of Strixhaven previews kicking off, we got a pretty interesting reveal from Wizards via social media.

The "Traveling Biblioplex" will show up at a variety of events around the United States as well as Wales in the United Kingdom though June. Little is known thus far about the events aside from the fact that they will allow fans to explore the story, meet Seanan McGuire, and engage in a variety of MTG related activities.

No doubt this is partially a part of the promotion of the upcoming book Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos by McGuire. That book releases Tuesday, April 7 and will be a separate story from the one we've received via the Mothership in the lead-up to Secrets of Strixhaven preview season.

The events will be held in the following locations on their respective dates:

  • April 18-19: Bookcon in New York City
  • May 1-3: MagicCon Las Vegas
  • May 21-31: Hay Festival in Hay-On-Wye, Wales
  • June 25-29: ALA Annual in Chicago.

Scryfall Goes Old School For April Fool's Day

April Fool's Day is one of those days where you have to carefully weave through the internet as you attempt to discern what's real and what isn't. Thankfully, some places provide some relatively lighter fare that proves much more transparently harmless.

Scryfall took that approach with their April Fool's gag, transforming their homepage into the kind of webpage straight out of the late 90's. If you're from the era of Geocities, web-rings, and top-sites, then this is for you.

Many of the little button gifs depict funny Magic-related themes that direct you to Scryfall searches based on that theme. Others take you to classic internet websites like Newgrounds or the infamous Space Jam website that remains a perfect time capsule to the 90s even now.

Best of all is the music player - a staple of websites in this era. The music that plays is from MicroProse's Magic: The Gathering (better known as "Shandalar") which makes for a surprisingly fun way to celebrate a foolish day.

By the time you read this, the site may be down, though it is expected to be immortalized in the near future along with all other April Fool's gags for fans to enjoy.

Decklist of the Week

Move over Standard, it's time once again for a Modern Regional Championship Qualifier (or RCQ) season! After two back-to-back runs with Standard - one of which was the infamously unfun Vivi Cauldron era - players are finally getting to play Modern once more.

The format has changed quite a bit since we last saw it last. Avatar: the Last Airbender gave some players Wan Shi Tong, Librarian while Lorwyn Eclipsed managed to breathe new life into Living End. The deck that got hindered heavily with the banning of Violent Outburst but now gains some Cascade redundancy thanks to Formidable Speaker and has some new juice from the Evoke Elementals.

The real winner, though, was Edge of Eternities. The printing of Quantum Riddler enabled the mighty Jeskai Blink deck by Warping it in only to flicker it back. The other big innovation, which has been taking the format by storm, has been this newer version of Affinity.

Using Pinnacle Emissary and Weapons Manufacturing, it's possible to swarm the board with dangerous threats and dominate the game. The deck has also seen a few cards from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show up in many lists, including Skateboard, Ravenous Robots, and Krang, Master Mind.

It's a great time to break out your favorite Modern deck and hit your local shop as they start hosting these RCQs. Good luck and have fun.
