This past weekend was San Diego Comic-Con, the legendary nerd convention held every summer in California. Magic: the Gathering, Wizards, and Hasbro have all been mainstays of this convention for several years and have frequently shown off tons of new cards. This time proved no exception. While a handful of cards teased the eventual Magic: the Gathering - Avatar: the Last Airbender crossover release, here the primary focus was solely on Marvel's Spider-Man.
Had a blast swinging by our #MTGxSpiderMan off-site here at SDCC! It really makes you say, "BRING ME PICTURES OF SPIDERMAN!"

Throughout the weekend, players got introduced to several announcements for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering - Marvel's Spider-Man release. This ranged from welcome decks to tie-in promos to main set goodness. Fans could even see a cool crossover exhibit that senior game designer Gavin Verhey showed off across the web.
Previously, we'd seen a handful of scene box cards from the Magic: The Gathering - Marvel's Spider-Man Eternal Legal Cards set, as seen above. While those cards offered an initial taste - and were revisited throughout the weekend - the weekend's reveals provided our first true look at what the set had to offer.
There's a ton that was revealed over the course of the weekend so let's not waste any time. Get those cameras and your web fluid ready and let's jump in!
Revealed initially earlier in the week was the single card saga of Origin of Spider-Man. This provided a fantastic launching off point to signal the start of previews coming through (being Spider-Man's origin sotry and all) as well as a cool way to remind people of the upcoming preview panel. We'll come back to this one later.
It wouldn't take long for several more cards to make an early appearance via IGN. The exclusive reveal showed off five new cards - all of which represent characters beloved by many. Even if you're not a huge comic book fan, it's hard to not recognize these characters as several of the ones most prominently from the incredible Spider-Verse animated films. Characters like Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, Peter Porker; and Sp//der, Piloted by Peni represent fan favorites from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse whereas Spider-Man 2099 is Miguel O' Hara from the follow-up Across the Spider-Verse.
It'd be impossible to ignore that they also revealed everyone's favorite Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man, as Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man. This revealed that they were not only introducing the new modal transforming double-faced cards (try saying that five times fast!) but some sweet new variants as well. The card was shown to boast a special Iconic Covers variant that utilizes classic artwork from Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, two legendary Marvel comic authors and illustrators and one of whom co-created the character.

As San Diego Comic-Con kicked off proper, the previews started coming through in droves. First off was the reveal of several Marvel Legends action figures, as initially revealed through outlets like Polygon and eventually on the mothership. Thanks to Hasbro being the ones involved in the creation of these action figures, they also come with special Magic: The Gathering cards as well.
Three of these cards - Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer; Spectacular Spider-Man, and Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade - were all revealed for the first time. They would also be later shown to be cards in the main set as well, meaning that players wouldn't need to scramble over them as mechanically unique cards. The fourth card for Colonel John Jameson and his alter ego Man-Wolf were revealed as a reskin of the classic Magic card Huntmaster of the Fells // Ravager of the Fells.
Each figure will be going on sale on October 1st, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more information if you're interested in picking them up!

That same day, the set's five Welcome Decks were also revealed on Daily MTG and revealed dozens of additional new cards.
Roughly 50 were from the main set. Several showed beloved characters or instances, and even included classic comic book onomatopoeias like Thwip!, Whoosh!, and Kapow! Several more various Spider-Man variants including Spider-Gwen, Free Spirit and the silly Spider-Rex, Daring Dino - both of which quite notably are new common legends, which could have implications in Pauper! A few cards, like Spider-Rex, Masked Meower, and the very non-Magic Taxi Driver took some players out of it, but others were simply taken in by the whole experience.
Additionally, thanks to these Welcome Decks we got our first look at the remaining 20 cards from the Eternal Legal Cards set. Each of these is of a fairly low power level and - perhaps more importantly - can only be played in eternal formats like Pauper, Legacy, and Commander. Each of these are exclusive to the Welcome Decks, though they can also be found in Collector Boosters. It's unclear at this time if these only include foils or if you can get non-foil versions there as well.

Finally, the Magic: The Gathering - Marvel's Spider-Man Preview Panel kicked off on Friday. This panel recapped several of the cards already shown throughout the week, but also showed off new versions as well. Case in point, Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man already had two versions shown off by IGN earlier in the week. However here, they got to show off two new treatments, with one utilizing the new Web-Slinger treatment and the other being a special promo featuring a modern rendition of the original Amazing Fantasies #15 where the character debuted.
Thankfully, they still had a few more cards to show off. The one that far and away got the most people talking was easily Spider-Punk. The beloved character also gets one hell of a card, boasting very aggressive stats when his riot ability is taken into account. Couple this with the fact that your stuff can't be countered and damage can't be prevented and you've got a winner Red Deck Wins card right here. Others like Symbiote Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Revenant; and Doctor Octopus, Master Planner gave some classic characters and versions of characters their time to shine as well.
We also got to see two more modal transforming double-faced cards! Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey have become true fan favorites as Spider-People and each card offers up an extremely cool build-around for players to take advantage of.
Of course, it should be worth mentioning some of the cool variant treatments they showed off during this panel as well! Perhaps the coolest was the Comic Panel treatment that was shown off on the likes of Origins of Spider-Man, which turns a saga into a comic book. Even the people most vocally against this release had to give them credit for how clever a choice this was. The Borderless Web-Slinger variant also shows up on several different versions of Spider-People cards, offering a stylish look utilizing the iconic Spider-Man webbing. Finally, there's also a bunch of borderless scene cards as well.!
What did all of those cards have in common? A special printing that builds a whole scene when put together! These cards can be found in both Play and Collector boosters. #MTGxSpiderMan #MTGxMarvel

Much like other scene showcases from the likes of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, every one of the scene card treatments can be lined up to form a picture. You can see how they look - using renditions that lack the MTG text and templating - in the above Bluesky post. Additionally, the two scene versions of Miles Morales // Ultimate Spider-Man and Gwen Stacey // Ghost-Spider have a matching front side. Their back sides are what act as part of the larger scene image.
A new #MTGxSpiderman Saga was revealed at Mark Rosewater's #SDCC Blogatog Live panel, yesterday!

Finally, on Saturday Mark Rosewater held a live Blogatog panel. At this panel, he revealed one last card for the weekend: Kraven's Last Hunt in both its regular and Comic Panel treatments.
It's been a long week of previews. Over 100 unique card printings (including special Booster Fun treatments) were revealed, making for a starkly different First Look than your usual one that might show off some 20 cards. It wasn't without controversy either, as these reveals came as many players were getting their first opportunity to play with Edge of Eternities. However, the hype train never rests, and it made perfect sense to showcase this sweet new set at the biggest comic book convention in the United States.
The official preview season kicks off September 1st for a markedly shorter than usual one week run of reveals. In the meantime, be sure to check out the CoolStuffInc store page for Magic: the Gathering - Marvel's Spider-Man as well as the following official pages:
